Do you use one and if not, can I ask why?

I am interested in the rough proportion of people in the UK who use an electric toothbrush - no idea why - its just something I pondered upon whilst brushing my teeth. I use an electric, but haven't always - started around 3 years ago, and haven't looked back since. My teeth feel so much cleaner, and its easier too.

I cannot really see why someone wouldn't use one, outside from the expense, which I do understand would be prohibitive for many.

AIBU to ask: do you use an electric toothbrush, and if you don't then what is the reason for that?

Honestly, I don't have my life together enough to keep it charged!
And when you use an electric toothbrush manually, somehow you (i) catch my lip on the rotating head that's not moving.

Electric toothbrush (30 years or more) and water pick. My dentist said I have ‘impeccable oral hygiene’ when I went for my regular check-up last week.

Oh yes, same here. I've not used an ordinary toothbrush for decades. I recently got an Oral B Genius 8000 - far superior to the model I had before. (It cost £99 but worth every penny.)

maddy68 · 29/08/2022 04:23

I use one. I am an ex dental nurse. They give a more thorough clean

Well go fucking you! Saving the world one fucking bamboo TB at a time!

Is there really any need for that?

FangsForTheMemory · 29/08/2022 04:34

I use an electric one but sometimes buy an ordinary one for holidays. I find using an ordinary one very slow and it takes me a good five minutes to get my teeth as clean.

BananaBender · 29/08/2022 04:43

I’ve used one for about 10 years. My teeth feel much cleaner using it.

Why are people finding it so hard to keep them charged? Don’t you just plug in the charger in the bathroom and then put the toothbrush back on the charger between uses? Or am I missing something about bathrooms in the UK?

There are rules about having electricity in the bathroom here. Not every house has a power socket in the bathroom.

Mannymoomin · 29/08/2022 04:55

I’ve been using electric toothbrushes forever!
in the last 2 years though I’ve switched to a silicone toothbrush, why they don’t get the hype they deserve I don’t know.
Ive only ever charged it twice, and I always brush for longer than 2 minutes!

Zonder · 29/08/2022 04:56

I've tried but I don't like them. They move too fast and make my teeth feel funny. My dentist said he uses a bamboo one and is happy with my teeth so I don't need to switch.

sashh · 29/08/2022 04:57

I use one due to arthritis.

FlorencePennnywell · 29/08/2022 05:04

Yes but the heads are very expensive as I have the io series 9

Used one for donkeys years and try and keep an up to date model.

Yabado · 29/08/2022 05:04

Yes I do I started this year and I wouldn’t go back to an ordinary tooth brushe

Im charging mine now and the charge lasts around 3 -4 weeks
I have a case that I keep the charger in
It’s only a cheap £20 reduced from £60 in Superdrug as I used my membership card

Oh that sounds annoying. Pretty standard here to have at least one powerpoint in the bathroom for hairdryers, electric shavers, etc. New builds have multiple powerpoints in the bathrooms.

verdantverdure · 29/08/2022 05:25

I'm wondering if I need to go back to manual brushing because of the cost of energy, but I wouldn't want o have to pay for fillings and root canals etc though so it's tricky.

I've had my brush a decade and do the standard 4 brush heads a year. I charge it on Wednesdays. It's a lot less plastic than using skincare.

womaninatightspot · 29/08/2022 05:55

I’ve used one for years and all the kids do too. I have a charging plug in the bathroom. I do need to remember to rotate them around the charger which is a pain but I think they clean teeth better. I wish you could buy a multi toothbrush charger.

Simonjt · 29/08/2022 06:19

I use a manual toothbrush, I had an electric one but I disliked the sensation and I couldn’t get the hang of not doing the brushing motion. My teeth are clean and healthy with a manual as everytime I go to my six monthly hygienist appointment she literally has nothing to do, to the point that my monthly dental fee has been reduced.

Pebbles2022 · 29/08/2022 06:25

Probably not as good as bamboo but I have ones that are part of a loop recycling system so you send back the old ones!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/08/2022 06:33

I've used one for 30 years. If I ever have to use a manual toothbrush, my teeth don't feel clean.

Annoyingly, the house I moved into last year has no socket in the bathroom. Electric toothbrushes are designed to sit on the charging unit all the time, so if you have a socket in the bathroom, you can just keep it on that and it will never run out of charge. And you can rinse the entire brush under the tap, they are meant to get wet!

User36373729472847273 · 29/08/2022 06:35

Yes I do! I also got one about 3 years ago and never looked back however, the battery life is no longer good so may buy another. I got a £25 oral b one (in the sale and more expensive originally supposedly) which was good until the batter life starting depleting.

No they aren’t!
The battery degrades really quickly if you leave them on charge the whole time

much better to let it charge fully, then run out then charge fully…

you can buy adapters for normal plugs so you can plug in a toothbrush charger

tenbob · 29/08/2022 06:44

Has anyone got a Suri brush?

I keep getting ads for them - they have plant based brush heads which biodegrade and look about the same price as an Oral-B one

i don’t need a new brush atm but am tempted to get more that’s a bit more environmentally friendly when it’s time to replace

I have three that I charge interchangeably and always have! Is that wrong?

03X · 29/08/2022 06:46

I’ve used one for around 15 years. Hate using a manual on holiday. I have a fancy Philips vibrating one now (DH bought me for Christmas - trust me I loved it) and it was weird at first as it vibrates instead of spins. But it’s fab, love it!

Sapphirensteel · 29/08/2022 06:46

DinoDay · 29/08/2022 00:35

I got one a few years ago and couldn't get into the habit. Kept going back to old brush. Then would get paranoid electric brush head had gone manky. I have a real issue with germs. Why I don't have the same feeling about a normal brush I haven't used in a week I have no idea - I hate my brain.

It did not help that I got tonsillitis after going back to the electric the last time. Just can't bring myself to use it again.

And now I've lost the charger. Sometimes I find the charger, but can't find the brush. And sometimes I find both and not the brush heads. And then I find the brush heads but... you get the idea.

Basically I'm bloody useless

Soak the brush head in lemon juice and water, diluted vinegar or a bit of a Milton tablet. Or even very dilute bleach and rinse well.

Electric toothbrush, 30 plus years I think. Can’t remember when I last used a manual brush.
