my Best one is…

a visit to the card factory for cheap cards and gift bags and then picking up presents from car boot sales or charity shops. I have got some brilliant kids party presents for 50p so with the card and a cheap gift bag I have brought the cost of a present in for a pound before.

looking for any tips at all, obviously you can buy porridge oats in bulk cheaper than buying expensive kids cereal etc but anything clever or that people might not have thought of before.

don’t know how bad the fuel crisis will be but considering charging battery packs to charge phones at work and taking a thermos of boiled water home 😂

@jewishmum is that a joke? You wash your poo ridden cloths at work?! Really?

I didn't even say that. They aren't poo-ridden clothes either wtf.

RJnomore1 · 30/08/2022 20:37

AlwaysLatte · 29/08/2022 20:09

Never flush after wees. If you have multiple toilets in the house if someone takes a poo then also leave it and that toilet is out of bounds for rest of the day until the bedtime flush. Only flush otherwise if all toilets have had poos in the day
I draw the line at that - the house would stink!!

I don’t get the point either - if you can’t use that loo for the rest of the day just flush and don’t use it anyway? No stinking the house out.

That’s presuming you have more than one toilet too of course!

Zone2NorthLondon · 30/08/2022 20:37

What are you saying out of interest? What’s the bum wipe box

PayPennies · 30/08/2022 20:42

@jewishmum please say what a bum wipe box is

CakeFiend8 · 30/08/2022 20:48

I agree with @martinsmoneysaver in general about saving water. I’ve been filling a little bowl with soapy water, and washing the dishes with that, and then rinsing with a tap spray thingy the water board sent me that makes the water pressure stronger/uses less water.

Ditto with brushing teeth, and soaping myself down in the shower - ie not leaving the tap/shower running all the time, but turning them off and on when needed.

I would like to reuse the bath water too for watering plants, and probably will be good exercise for me at the same time!

When I boil the kettle, if there’s leftover hot water I’ll put it in a thermos pot - it’s still piping hot for at least two/three hours. Any entrepreneurs out there, isn’t that a good idea for a kettle: a thermos kettle that keeps the water hot…?

When the weather’s dry I’ve been using my bicycle instead of the car - I’ve fitted the pannier with bags, and can take four bags of shopping home on the bike that way. Again, I’m getting exercise at the same time!

Clarityiskey · 30/08/2022 20:48

There is a very handy gadget you can fix to the bath waste water pipe that lets you choose to either get rid as usual or divert it to a water butt/garden. I bought one recently and already gave used several water butt's worth on the garden/ washing outdoor furniture. It comes from a company called "water two" ( with whom I have no links except buying one off them!)
Here is the link

My brother has worked out that 10 minute shower will cost £2.50 on the new rates. It cheaper to pay for gym membership each month and shower there everyday.

Bloody hell 😳

jewishmum · 30/08/2022 21:01

To clarify, I'm talking about making me my own re-useable toilet wipes. That I use at home!

Sorry I meant cooks

Doesn't everyone do that already? I boil the kettle if I want to do pasta, potatoes, it's quicker than boiling the water in the pan, I also put the pan on the heat for a minute so that the boiling water from the kettle isn't cooled.

The very oldies, like me, will remember the programme of power cuts in the early 70s, usually 3 hours ,twice a day. We were told not to worry about the freezer, keep it full and it will be OK for up to 4 hours as long as you're not constantly opening and closing it, so I'm going to try that, turning it off for three hours a couple of times a day. I'll probably get one of the timers out of the Christmas box in case I forget it's off! If the freezer wasn't full we would buy and freeze bread!

Then the Sust-it shower calculator will reassure you because it isn't.

It’s prob been suggested, but mine:

I don’t pay for Amazon prime.
I look throughout the year for xmas/birthday presents. Put them in ‘save for later’.

At least twice a year they give you prime for free. At that point, I buy things. Most of the time they’re cheaper! And I’m delete the ‘impulse buys’ that I’d forgotten and don’t want 🤷‍♀️

won’t save a fortune, but will save £70’iau 🤷‍♀️

MiniPumpkin · 30/08/2022 21:18

Sell on Facebook marketplace. I have made just under £400 in 2 weeks clearing out things like baby car seat, cot, various clothes. Obviously that won’t keep up as will run out of stuff to sell but I’m so chuffed !

dottiedodah · 30/08/2022 21:22

Well I have trimmed my own hair for a long time (dont like hairdressers!) and do my own colour as well.No hairdressing costs. Also when some birthdays /occasions will do "steak and cake at home .Our friend is a chef and sometimes does it .Only run one car if possible , Use Ebay and so on

Leftbutcameback · 30/08/2022 21:24

Whilst Tesco still have their clubcard offer for deliveries take advantage of that. Means deliveries are free and I find it easier to spot offers on the grocery app. Stock up on loo roll etc if it's on offer esp if you don't drive.

Leftbutcameback · 30/08/2022 21:27

@Clarityiskey - great idea! Thanks for sharing the link

Loftyowl · 30/08/2022 21:27

I use Shopmium which is a cashback app for groceries. You get to try lots of new products at a reduced price, and sometimes for free.I get my groceries with cash and when I get the cashback,I leave it in my PayPal account to save up til I need it.The savings really add up and for every friend you refer, you get between £3-5 which is paid as cashback on groceries.
https://www.shopmium.com/uk/referral/9ru37q
If anyone wants to try it,you can use it in most supermarkets eg Sainsburys,Tesco,Asda and also some local shops and petrol stations.

Loftyowl · 30/08/2022 21:29

Oh,and if you download the Shopmium app,you get a free tube of Pringles just for trying it out.

dormouses · 30/08/2022 21:29

Live in Scotland?

Free prescriptions, eye tests and dental check ups for all.

Free bus passes for under 22s and over 60s.

Standard water charges, not metered for domestic properties.

5zeds · 30/08/2022 21:34

If there are going to be power cuts, would it be sensible to fill up all the space in your freezer with tubs of ice? Cheaper to keep a full freezer frozen and slower to defrost. You could also put some frozen containers in the fridge to keep it cool.

Qik · 30/08/2022 21:38

Apply for a mortgage on a house way above your borrowing capacity, get car finance on a top of the range all electric SUV and plan holidays next year in Hawaii, Montserrat and Costa Rica. Just before the 14 Day 'cooling off' period, cancel all these commitments and let your family know you have just saved them about £600,000.

Aswad · 30/08/2022 21:39

unsubscribe from all marketing emails so not tempted (decline cookies too so the bastards can’t get me)

use Tesco clubcard credit card to earn money off days out

Weekly standing order (very small amount) to an account where I’ve destroyed the card, pin and online log in details.

Leftbutcameback · 30/08/2022 21:40

You can use polystyrene to fill up your freezer rather than ice. The sort you get in deliveries. It helps fridges and freezers retain the cold if they're not full.

AbreathofFrenchair · 30/08/2022 21:49

Kerrrmieee · 28/08/2022 23:01

Batch cook. Everything.

Admittedly we are a family that likes stews, lasagna, bolognaise, curry, soup. We do a mix of mince or completely vegan - 5 bean chilli for example.

If you can afford to buy bigger - like ricewise then do it.

So if you eat like we do - I'm think wet food. Cook it all at once and freeze. I was given an old chest freezer, so I'm lucky in that respect.

I found some potatoes the other day, that had been boiled and fluffed ready for a roasting (🤔). Home made Auntie Bessie's... I hope 🤣

I don't have a dishwasher or a tumble. But I only wash on quick eco 30 min setting.

Use economy noodles (like plain super noodles) instead of Blue Dragon or supermarket in own egg noodles.

I don't know. Stuff like that.

Bloody cat's would rather starve than eat a box different to their preferred brand though. Wankers. 🙄

Use freezer bags to freeze your wet food fill then flatten it out and you can fit more in the freezer than if it's in tubs or pots.

Handy if you don't have a big freezer too

Without wishing to sound condescending, I wonder if people are considering options other than cutting costs.

Focus on income. For some perhaps this is an option, even if not for everybody. It is an employees' market at the moment. More flexible working also.

Income (A) - costs (B) = spare cash (C)

At the moment, the Tory government and a large minority of (irresponsible) capitalists want you to learn to live with less.

What you should be doing is earning more while at the same time saving. But do not spend an hour trying to save £1. The NMW is more than that and there are better hobbies.

Totally agree, inflation predictions in the news today are 22.4%, unless people were living an extremely affluent and/or wastefull life then cutting that much is not going to be possible.

I was planning on increasing my hours from next week when DD starts reception anyway but will be increasing them more than orginally planned. My job is pretty shit at the moment though so not particlarly looking forward to it.

We are obviously doing a complete budget review as well, but there is no way we could cut 22% without seriously impacting our lives, if at all.
