my Best one is…

a visit to the card factory for cheap cards and gift bags and then picking up presents from car boot sales or charity shops. I have got some brilliant kids party presents for 50p so with the card and a cheap gift bag I have brought the cost of a present in for a pound before.

looking for any tips at all, obviously you can buy porridge oats in bulk cheaper than buying expensive kids cereal etc but anything clever or that people might not have thought of before.

don’t know how bad the fuel crisis will be but considering charging battery packs to charge phones at work and taking a thermos of boiled water home 😂

This sounds nuts to put it bluntly.

Tag each other every time you shower. Pouring cups of water down the toilet instead of using the flush button. Traipsing up and down the stairs filling a watering can from the bath.

It reminds me of someone I know who used drive ten miles to buy one item in a shop because it was one pound less than in her local shop.

Martinsmoneysaver has this totally right I'd say. Not only for a 'cost of living' point of view, but environmentally - there literally isn't going to be enough water to do anything else - and much sooner than you think.

I remember as a school child in the mid 1970s watching videos at school which mentioned all of these - and putting water in a cup to use to wash your teeth (I really didn't like that one).

It is a truth that privilage taken away feels like opression. This isn't oppression, its a massive privilage we have all had for about 100 years that is about to dissolve because the past 2 generations raided the sweet shop and now there are no more sweets.

I have lots of water butts and use rainwater to water the garden, tomatoes, veg etc (can use a hose if its like that) and water all my indoor plants. Plants much prefer rainwater anyway.

And get solar power. My bills are very low because I time the washing machine/dishwasher etc to go on during the day when its sunny and my electric is free. Most equipment has timers nowadays. And I don't have a tumble dryer - line drying or drying in a window (look up japanese space saving ones) work great.

Cut dishwasher tablets in half
Lower your standards a little and wash clothes less frequently and vacuum less often
Shower at the gym
Get smart sockets so all standby devices switch off at a certain hour
Charge power packs at work
Shop for cheaper phone deals. DH and I currently paying 1p a month on Lebara (not a typo!)
Use Quidco
Regift
Don’t send Christmas cards
Pay yourself first, by setting up a standard order for a set amount to save each month.
Stop shopping to keep up appearances. Children do not need that many clothes or shoes
Set up a Giveaway Group on WhatsApp with friends
Agree not to purchase gifts for adult family members

@HintofVintagePink

I’m looking for cheap mobile deals please can you explain how you are paying 1p per month?

There is always one, isn’t there 🙄🙄🙄

But you do know that employers are going through this too, if everyone does it then job losses on the horizon.... so if you are a cheap skate and do this, you've been warned....

It was a deal I saw too was it Lyca? It was on fir a short time, not sure it's available now. Goes to a small amount (is it £6) after a period of time?

I've got an all inclusive deal (everything is unlimited) with three through my business at £10pcm for each sim card.

evian76 · 30/08/2022 18:19

That’s genius!

jewishmum · 30/08/2022 18:25

Every time we outgrow an item of clothing we cut the shape and length of 2 pieces of toilet paper and put it with the rest of the pile in the bum wipe box.

But I have free on-site laundry here so I'm able to truly save this way.

Nothing wrong with charging your phone at work. I charge my work phone at home.
I am going to try to remember to take a travel cup with me when I am out! May even take tea bags as drink my tea without milk, just as for hot water!!
I cook double, then split into batches and freeze.

FoodologistGirl · 30/08/2022 18:28

Me and my sister go to the cinema every week. We missed it so much during lockdown, I swear I’d watch paint dry if it was on a huge screen. We use the meerkats compare site to get half price ticket so only costs us £5 each a week. The clever part is you only need to buy a one day travel insurance to say Devon at £1.35 to get a year of half price movies. As we go so often we don’t buy popcorn or drinks, we just enjoy the film. 🤷‍♀️

You can drastically cut cooking time of rice and pasta by soaking it for a few hours in cold water. You only need to heat it up for a few minutes and it's ready to eat. Saves money and time!

I just Googled this. Once the pasta has rehydrated you can just heat it up in the sauce. Great idea!

It is the grossest one I have come across (and in a way - also quite disturbing to think children are having to endure their parents forbidding them from flushing the loo)

but I have seen much stranger on the royal threads. Some of those are just batty

I heard parents were turning off the fridge at night in the height of the recent UK heatwave and their poor children getting lots of stomach upsets because food was going off. Unbelievably thick as mince, is the only way to describe that sort of decision. I'd sooner go further into debt that give my family bloody food poisoning.

some of the suggestions on here are appalling and ridiculous, mixed with some "jokey" ones that some people might take seriously, not least of all if they are really desperate. People need to think twice before posting, some people's MH is already suffering, stop creating the same unnecessary shitstorm as during COVID. Competitive penny pinching.

Mummyto2rugrats · 30/08/2022 18:47

Use cashback sites along with cashback credit card along with airtime rewards. Just one example, one luxury I give myself is once per year do a bulk order of with laithwaites wine (cheaper than buying bottles through the year adhoc on shopping). Airtime rewards have my cash back card logged so when I use that I not only get cash back through air time but also on my card and if cashback on offer through cashback site go through them get triple cash backs on the wine purchased so in essence the bulk buy which is cheaper than buying adhoc gets even more money off. Do this with everything.
Cashback sites for car insurance renewal /home insurance renewal etc I sometimes do searches on all comparison sites before then looking if the cashback site has them in there.
Sim only contracts on all phones got 2 really decent deals recently £8pm for 18gb data and £25 cash back through the company but also did it through a cash back site so even more back and another as that deal ran out before I could do the 2nd one was 20gb data £8pm but again through a cashback link
Definitely menu plan but going to try the 8day one suggested as never tried that !
Do use to good to go if anything in your area

Ahh yes. If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown flush it down. Obviously!!! Apart from last thing at night...

I've found a way to get completely free internet and phone bill. Instead of buying broadband I just hotspot from my mobile. 100GB is enough for me to do everything I need, including copious Zoom calls. This costs £10 per month. Then use 'Airtime Rewards' and claim money back from my
train commute (and other purchases). This covers my mobile bill, and therefore all my internet.

Does this work for tv streaming services

Autumn61 · 30/08/2022 19:03

My brothers wife died a few months back. Her wish was for a ‘Simply Funeral’. No mourners , no service, flowers etc. My brother picked up her ashes a week later . We are a large family and originally found this bizarre; now every single one of us has signed up to this.

Mrssheppard18 · 30/08/2022 19:05

-I make a meal plan, work out where one pack of meat could go two ways, cut out things you don’t really need, I’ve stopped buying crisps, chocolates, biscuits, cereal etc (I’m lucky it is just me and the husband)
-Shop online so i don’t put unnecessary things in my trolly
-Buy a months worth of long life milk, bulk toilet roll, bread, dog food, washing powder, toiletries at the beginning of the month so I don’t have to worry about finding money for it through the month
-I got rid of sky tv and now just use prime and Netflix as I can cancel if I’m ever short one month
-Moved to sky mobile, unused data gets rolled for up to 3 years. Mine and my husbands bills are less than £8 combined and we can lower our bill or up it to suit what we need each month and use any data we have already saved.
-During the evenings especially in the winter we only use our bedroom, saves using electricity/heating every other room in the house up.
-We still have an old emersion boiler, so we only put the water on when we really need it.

Also if anyone is on universal credits check out BT essentials broadband, it’s the same as they’re standard broadband but a lower price for people on universal credits

I would love this to be true! Would also cut down on steam/damp in the kitchen. Has anyone tried it?

Put the lid on the saucepan to keep heat in and cools pasta sooner ..
this applies to all cooking in pans
