my Best one is…

a visit to the card factory for cheap cards and gift bags and then picking up presents from car boot sales or charity shops. I have got some brilliant kids party presents for 50p so with the card and a cheap gift bag I have brought the cost of a present in for a pound before.

looking for any tips at all, obviously you can buy porridge oats in bulk cheaper than buying expensive kids cereal etc but anything clever or that people might not have thought of before.

don’t know how bad the fuel crisis will be but considering charging battery packs to charge phones at work and taking a thermos of boiled water home 😂

Your brother is winding you up. An electrician friend worked this out for us. At the moment, it costs 20p for a 10 minute shower on todays rates, so even at the top end of the cap it will be 40p . Just checked my smart meter as DH was showering, and the meter went to current use up by 1.20 per HOUR. So a 5minute electric shower is currently costing us 10p. Does your brother work for the Daily Mail. They like scaremongering or does he take hour long showers? Just take a 5 minute shower once the prices go up and it will be 20p.

I was thinking it must be an electric shower as those are expensive. But even those don’t cost so much. Even the highest wattage one at 10.8kw would cost 93.60p per 10 minute shower after the Oct 22 rates come into effect.

The cheapest is the 7.5kw shower costing 65p per 10 minute shower.

Mine is just mumsnet! So many good tips!
can I be really cheeky? I want to take my son to Warwick Castle for his birthday to see Zog tomorrow but it’s so expensive! I’ve been trying to find the special Kelloggs boxes with the 2 for 1 offers but can’t track them down. Does anyone have a code that they don’t think they’ll use?
thanks so much everyone I’d be so grateful if anyone had an unwanted code.

@Kendodd

curious. Do you have children? A partner? Are they on the same wavelength as your re car and home being something akin to frivolities?

@mushroom3

I did this on the weekend and bought loads of fruit from the market.
6 huge pink lady apples for £1- I was expecting them to be a bit mushy for the price. I ate one walking around and it was lovely so I went back for more!

So, 12 pink lady, 8 kiwi fruits, 8 big tomatoes on the vine, 2 punnets of blueberries, 6 large lemons, 7 oranges and a bunch of banana for £8.50!

That is very odd considering the majority of that fruit has been flown over and would not have been home grown by that trader!

Not exactly an ingenious money saving tip but if anyone has an Iceland Bonus card they top up , if you have £100 on it by 31st Aug Iceland will credit you £15. This is in addition to the usual £1 for every £20 loaded onto it. Means in November you will have a Bonus card of £100 worth £120. A friend was given some unexpected overtime last month for which she has just been paid and has just registered a Bonus card today from scratch and put the full £100 on in one go and it's worked. I am definatly going to top mine up.i know it wont be possible for lots if people but a 20% bonus is def worth it.

Still on hot water, I keep the dregs of shampoo, shower gels etc near the kitchen sink. Otherwise they litter the bathroom as the dcs would have moved on to a full bottle and abandoned the almost empty bottle. When I have some spare hot water (e.g. excess water left over after a boil), I put it into the bottle, shake it and use the bubbly liquid to clean the sink with a brush. Takes less than a minute. I get a sparkling sink and a clean shampoo bottle which I recycle.

This must only save me pennies but it feels good.

Also good for cleaning bath, toilet etc. No worries about leaving any harsh chemicals on the surface too

We do this too. I use the top shelf in the fridge. It keeps fresh for up to 14 days this way. Needs to be extremely fresh when it's refrigerated though.

Never flush after wees. If you have multiple toilets in the house if someone takes a poo then also leave it and that toilet is out of bounds for rest of the day until the bedtime flush. Only flush otherwise if all toilets have had poos in the day.

If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down. 😉

One of the ladies at the gym says she now has her showers and styles her hair etc at the gym, rather than using her own hot water and electricity for hair dryer etc.

My dad does this. He never showers at home because he goes to the gym every day. He must save a small fortune!

Getting my DC (7) his own free debit card so he stops spending my money!

BeSmartWithMoney · 29/08/2022 16:38

It is really simple. I've saved money by buying a small house in a not very good area, not owning a car, not going on holiday, not buying expensive new clothes, not going to expensive pubs and restaurants, and not having children I couldn't afford. I invested my extra income after these savings in companies that pay good consistent dividends, which now more than cover my living costs, so I find I don't have to save money. Some people are so profligate, spending everything they earn, without a sufficient margin of savings, or much thought for the future.

ReneBumsWombats · 29/08/2022 16:39

I'd honestly rather spend the money on a flush than let shit sit in a toilet all day.

tillytoodles1 · 28/08/2022 22:17

The people charging their phones and filling flasks at work do know it stealing electricity don't they?

Oh do bore off! Most people in need of a pay rise!!

Endlesslypatient82 Seems you’ve run out of anything worth while to say so instead you put someone down. Out of order

You live in an area you would rather not
You never holiday
You don’t have a car (presumably very good transport links?)

how old are your children?

Zoflora is hazardous to marine life. Please don't put it into the water system.

Plus you're just swapping one product for another so it's not really saving money, or am I missing something

The poster moaning about all the people “not getting it” despite all her energy into arguments and providing “reams and reams” of evidence - I stand by imagining this poster to be a total bore at dinner parties.

The pomposity of thinking that you know best and we should all just bow down and accept their stance is…. Laughable

ivykaty44 · 29/08/2022 16:43

@Libre55

if the shower is gas, then why is it using electric? And how much is the gas costing? How much is the water cutting?

You forgot to mention how lucky you are to have

  • high enough income to save & to buy a house
  • a steady income
  • live in an area with good public transport or footpaths/cycle ways
  • access to cheap clothing
  • access to cheap pubs/restaurants
  • not have suffered catastrophic loss
