my Best one is…

a visit to the card factory for cheap cards and gift bags and then picking up presents from car boot sales or charity shops. I have got some brilliant kids party presents for 50p so with the card and a cheap gift bag I have brought the cost of a present in for a pound before.

looking for any tips at all, obviously you can buy porridge oats in bulk cheaper than buying expensive kids cereal etc but anything clever or that people might not have thought of before.

don’t know how bad the fuel crisis will be but considering charging battery packs to charge phones at work and taking a thermos of boiled water home 😂

Or gyms going under and closing. If it’s £5/week and you use more than that in hot water and electricity, they won’t survive. Especially since businesses have higher energy rates than we do.

Couldn't agree more. It seems to cost about a penny to charge a smartphone, so I'm not going to self-flagellate for occasionally doing that at work. Taking daily, lengthy showers at the gym when electricity prices are going through the roof, is an absolute fucking piss take.

My sister always made cous cous, super noodles and things like that in the bowl rather than a pan on the hob. I suppose it's like pot noodles?

the 10 minute pasta only works if the pasta has been pre cooked. I use it to use leftover pasta for other dishes if I cooked too much the previous day.

You will be happy to hear that due to some magical chemical process reheated pasta has less calories, can’t be arsed to find a link but you can try in Google.

Join all available groups, sites for freebies. If you will spend few minutes a day, you'll get a lot. For example - this month I received lots of perfume samples, shampoo and lipstick. So you don't need to buy. My skin or hairs are not sensitive, so for me it's a life changing. You just need a time for that.

@Meklk what sites do you use?

use your washing machine less?
but you need to stock up on essential clothes?

ClaryFairchild · 29/08/2022 11:06

@Endlesslypatient82 - this is a BUDGETING technique. Budget a weekly shop and then only shop every 8 days, eventually you will have TWO weekly allocations for ONE week's shopping and can therefore SAVE that extra week.

In addition very few people budget and meal plan so precisely that all the food is eaten that there are not some left overs, and there is nothing left in the pantry to make up a some sort of a meal. On day 8 eve trying ends up with something slightly different, odd mixes of food, jam or baked beans on toast etc which is manageable for 1 day in the week.

If, however you are so skint that you can barely afford a week's worth of food and you regularly have meals such as baked beans on toast just to fill your stomach then this technique wouldn't work for you.

Obviously there has to be trust!

so when my sister uses - she selects her address and inserts her card details.

and vice versa for me.

we use the same email address (mine) and both know the password.

we trust each other implicitly!

We managed to get put water bill down to a mere £1.00 a month by
▪︎cutting baths out
▪︎very quick showers, whole family jumps in and out with eachother (2 adults plus 4 kids)
▪︎keep the plug in the bath to save shower water to mop floors, water garden, even flush toilet and when I get round to it, clean the bathroom.
I don't need fresh water to wash my toilet.

Visually it helps to see just how much water things use. It cam be a pain carrying the water in the watering can outside at first but its saving me my whole water bill. (it's so low because we were in so much credit. I'm expecting a £10 another bill next year down from 40)

This came for us just as prices were increasing, the original reason was an ethical one. I hated the idea of wasting water, but I didn't think we would get our usage down so low we would have a year of virtually no bills for minimal effort really.
I only mop once a week, so it's not that big of a task.

I know it seems overkill but its easy enough and the benefits outweigh the minor chores.
Plus I can easily carry 10 litres of water with one arm now so double win!

You use dirty water to mop your floors.... and you don't flush the toilet but save it up ....and use the shower water.

Think I'll pass on your tips as that is absolutely disgusting

I hate waiting in queues so when waiting to pay I often look at the item I was going to buy and decide it isn't needed enough to be worth the wait. Off I go leaving item behind, saving whatever it would have cost.

Check your subscriptions! I recently did a bit of housekeeping on our bank account and found old gaming subscriptions and Disney plus which no one is watching anymore.

Cook food using the Hay box method.. I have a Wonderbag and one of these Sew Fab Thermal cooking bags
You just heat up your food and put into the bag .. A few hours later and its done... Great for casseroles curries etc. I have actually been using the Wonderbag for several years now .. its brilliant

I use a large polystyrene box that I had a delivery of frozen food in some years ago. I fill in the space with packaging from other food deliveries I've had over the years.

It works very well and I've assessed them with thermal probes and they keep the temperature at safe levels.

I agree with you and highly recommend this method. If people don't have a polystyrene box, a preheated cool box with insulation works well.

If I have baking to do jacket potatoes can go in at the same time or meat/sausages for sandwiches, just trying to utilise the heat of the oven.

If we're having beans/peas for tea I cook them on the woodburner instead of hob in winter.

Sweep hard floors instead of hoovering.

I have to use 40 washes for our work clothes but going out clothes go back in the wardrobe so long as they don't smell bad or have dirt on them.

Xmas presents for kids only.

For very cold nights put a fleece blanket on top of your sheet then another on above the duvet.

One out next one straight in the shower, little children can shower with you or have a flannel/sponge down.

Dogs are on working dog biscuits, all our dogs have lived healthy average to long lives.

We have Netflix and watch lots on YouTube but quite happily dropped the BBC and live TV for the sake of £150 licence fee.

Vinted for clothes, I have dropped 2 dress sizes this year, very little has been purchased new. I am now looking to start selling on there.

— If you have solar panels without a battery, use the timers on your appliances to get the maximum benefit from them. I’ve saved a lot from using my washer and dishwasher at peak sunshine times over the summer.

— Trade in or sell your old phones, smart watches, tables, laptops, PCs, consoles etc. Plenty of stores give store credit if you’re looking to upgrade, or cash if you’ve just got old ones lying around.

— Make sure you’re getting the best deals from your bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. It’s often worth switching if you’re not getting your introductory offer anymore. So many have a joining bonus, or cash back etc.

— Take advantage of all the benefits of things you’ve already signed up for. Your mobile phone network may get you discounts at various places (O2 rewards gets you a free coffee at Gregg’s everyday, for example) or money off a service you already use, like Disney +. You may have discounts because of where you’re employed (NHS, forces etc…but several places in our town centre also offer discounts for other town centre workers. Costa offer this where I am). Your credit card may give discounts or cashback at certain places, even if it’s not a cashback account.

— When you get insurance policies, check that you actually need all the cover offered. Many travel insurance policies offer gadget insurance as an extra, but often they may be covered by your home insurance policy or covered as a benefit of your bank account.

I use the hot final rinse water from the dishwasher for

  • mopping floors
  • to wash microfibre cloths, mop heads, or similar in the washing machine
  • to run the 'high temp' clean wash for the washing machine (the water just has to be heated from 55C to 60 or 90C and I can let the machine do that or heat it on the gas hob)
  • that very hot water from the 'clean wash' for the washing machine is a good time to go and clean the outside drain or divert it to clean the paving (depending on what you used as a cleaning agent).

But how do you “get the water”? Isn’t it all spirting out when you open the door? And doesn’t it effect how clean your dishes are?
