my Best one is…

a visit to the card factory for cheap cards and gift bags and then picking up presents from car boot sales or charity shops. I have got some brilliant kids party presents for 50p so with the card and a cheap gift bag I have brought the cost of a present in for a pound before.

looking for any tips at all, obviously you can buy porridge oats in bulk cheaper than buying expensive kids cereal etc but anything clever or that people might not have thought of before.

don’t know how bad the fuel crisis will be but considering charging battery packs to charge phones at work and taking a thermos of boiled water home 😂

Def sell all your old stuff where you can. Recently sold 2 car seats/bases for £60.

saved all the kids Christmas outfits/jumpers and will list those near Xmas

thst said, I do find normal baby clothes don’t sell well

I can normally get about 50p- £1 on a bundle of normal baby clothes on ebay after fees. You have to present it well and list on a weekend when they have a discount on fees though.

I work as a live-in housekeeper, all my bills are paid.
My employer is a multi millionaire, he doesn't care if I charge my phone at work.
(I realise I'm very lucky)

You don't need a funeral if you donate your body to the nearest university anatomy school...

My grandmother donated her body to science.

The trouble was they didn't want it. They had enough bodies.

So even if you plan to do this, it might not be helpful and will still leave your family having to dispose of your body.

And no DIY burials aren't an option!

BooksAndChooks · 29/08/2022 09:11

Interesting.

I will give it a go this way. Would be good if it worked for other veg too. My spring onion turned out well, but the pak choi did go manky. Will try it with soil. Thank you.

"Who says you need a funeral? It’s £1000 to direct cremate and £7 for a scatter tube. Can skip the scatter tube even and bring your own container. See, just saved you £6k."

id rather have a wake and a few words after a direct cremation, funerals will change if the price keeps rising. The most expensive part is the council charges even if you have a basic funeral and different council charges can vary considerably by £700 locally.

A full freezer ru s more efficiently as it doesn't cool down as fast when you open the door, therefore the cooling unit won't have to work so hard. So fill it with cheap things that you will use - loaves of bread are good. Make sure they are well wrapped though tonavoid freezer burn.

The people charging their phones and filling flasks at work do know it stealing electricity don't they?

Yes. But otoh the bosses are typically “stealing” form the workers more and more. The pay disparity charts between the highest earners and lowest workers has increased massively in last 50 years, and especially since the start of this Tory government,

if people were paid by their employees a wage that covered the increased inflation and heating costs then we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

similarly if the energy suppliers weren’t paying out massive dividends to their shareholders and bonuses to their CEO, people wouldn’t need to be doing this. This includes water companies..water fgs…water is an essential for life and should never have been privatised into what is monopolies to line the pockets of shareholders.

eat leftovers cold. I have two hot meals a week which are part of a batch cook and I learnt to eat the leftovers cold - even chilli, curry with bread, baked beans. I eat cold soup.

If you like garlic put a couple of cloves of one in the ground to grow your own. I did it with one from tesco.

Or buy big bags of frozen garlic cubes, like this from Morrisons, 99p for 400g:

groceries.morrisons.com/products/taj-crushed-garlic-233769011

they also do frozen ginger, and even frozen garlic and ginger together, for a similar price.

I haven’t crunched the numbers but I think that’s cheaper than buying fresh and it’s certainly easier/lazier than peeling endless cloves of garlic. As a veggie I live on homemade dals, curries and stir fries and I can’t taste the difference between that and laboriously-prepared fresh ginger or garlic.

The tip I always give is menu plan and shop once a week but actually make your week 8 days. On day 8 use up all the odd bits and pieces in the fridge. That way you have 46 shopping weeks in a year and gain 6 weeks extra housekeeping money. This funds our xmas.

But all that means is that you’re not meal planning properly? 🤷🏻‍♀️
If you plan properly without leftovers you’ll still have Xmas money.

I'm with you on this, @martinsmoneysaver . I got one of those toilets that directs hand washing water into the cistern but it's not as wonderful as I'd hoped.

Now, I use my bath water via a bucket to flush with and water the garden. It's good exercise carrying buckets up and downstairs. I'd not thought of using it for mopping floors though and think I'll give that a miss if I've used conditioner. Otherwise yes, you've inspired me.

Something you didn't mention, if it's still hot you can fill the washing machine with it and save on heating costs as well.

You don’t need to carry it down in a bucket. I have been using grey water for years in the garden. I identified where my downpipe was and collect it from that before it hits the drain. Same with water from the washing machine rather than putting the hose down the waste pipe I can hook it over a large bucket and reuse that in my garden. As long as you aren’t adding bleaching agents to you wash it is fine on plants and veg.

@boobearandme hi!

I know I felt the same! It quickly mounts up, you just need to get into the habit of logging in via the site before going onto eBay. Getting car insurance via them is another good one (although you do need to check you are getting the best offer).

Good luck, hope it helps.

I did that this last year and this year. Last year I got a tonne. This year the garlic has done really badly and my cloves are only tiny.

I've found a way to get completely free internet and phone bill. Instead of buying broadband I just hotspot from my mobile. 100GB is enough for me to do everything I need, including copious Zoom calls. This costs £10 per month. Then use 'Airtime Rewards' and claim money back from my
train commute (and other purchases). This covers my mobile bill, and therefore all my internet.

That is genius.

PerkingFaintly · 29/08/2022 09:21

If you're having a new shower put in, look into a Waste Water Heat Recovery System. It has a heat exchanger so the outgoing warm water pre-heats the cold water going into your boiler.

It also works with some but not all electric shower units: they need to have a thermostatic mixer.

You don’t have to use food that you don’t really want to eat. File large plastic bottle with water and put them in any gaps.

Save on repeat prescription costs for anti-depressants by not worrying about constantly turning lights off to save 10p per day, when your energy cost have gone up by thousands.

ClaryFairchild · 29/08/2022 09:24

The plastic bags for cereal that are inside the boxes are excellent as a second bag for items that go in the freezer as they are a lot thicker than most store bought bags, helps stop freezer burn.

These plastic bags are also excellent as a tray liner for putting whatever you are freezing onto, cheaper than baking/freezer paper and can be wiped down and reused.

Freeze things on a tray separately (like ravioli) and once frozen put it in a bag. Easier to get out a portion.

If freezing several trays of something (like home made pasta/dumplings) use the little tripod things from large pizza boxes (that stop the lid squishing the pizza) to stack the trays but not squish the food.

ClaryFairchild · 29/08/2022 09:26

Stop using bag clips to seal plastic bags for fridge/freezer, they are usually rubbish and break quickly. Just use a couple of standard laundry plastic pegs to clip shut.
