"We don't have the heating on"

Just reading another thread and seen this "we never have the heating on at night" and I've never really understood what it means, but now with energy prices I need to know if its really what people do.

Our thermostat is set at 15 always, in the evenings we up it to 20 for a few hours. I consider 15 off, and 20 on. Is this the same? Or do people just not have the heating on at all, like your house could be 0 degrees? How cold does it get at night? Surely it gets down to single figures most of the time?

At the moment. Ours is off. Or set to frost setting so as good as. In winter we'll set the thermostat to a consistent temp. Historically we've kept living spaces at 20 and sleep spaces at 17 or less. Think we'll be keeping it a little lower this year!

We have to be careful as we are an old stone house. Too much huge variety in temp and we start getting damp issues from condensation.

Isaidnoalready · 27/08/2022 16:06

It doesn't get that cold at night your under blankets duvets etc also having hot water bottles or wheat pads

Moancup · 27/08/2022 16:08

15 degrees is effectively off. I’d be amazed if your rooms are getting below that at night. If they are then you need to invest in insulation pronto.

Scianel · 27/08/2022 16:08

Mine I turn down low enough that it won't come on overnight but as it will have been on earlier it won't drop thst much overnight in my insulated newbuild.

dementedpixie · 27/08/2022 16:08

My timer is set for it to be off overnight and during the middle of the day. The thermostat is also down really low just now so even when the timer is on the heaters aren't heating up as the rooms aren't cold enough

MassiveSalad22 · 27/08/2022 16:09

We just go to the boiler and flick the thing off. No idea if that’s right or not. Thermostats have always confused me. Love being warm in the duvet and it being freezing air around me! Although I still had our duvet on during the heatwave 😄

TopGolfer · 27/08/2022 16:09

I have mine on between 17 and 18 during the day, at 19 in the evenings. I turn it off at 10pm, sometimes when I wake up on a cold morning it’s about 14 but it doesn’t take long for the house to warm up.
I have never tested the temperature in the middle of the night.

BMW6 · 27/08/2022 16:09

We do the same OP. 15 is the default setting and it rarely fires up at that temperature even on the coldest day.

MassiveSalad22 · 27/08/2022 16:10

Also I turn individual radiators off but never know if that actually reduces the amount of energy the system uses, anyone know? Eg no point heating the box room which no-one is ever in, so the radiator is on the snowflake setting.

NorthStarRising · 27/08/2022 16:10

Unless there’s a small child in the house, or an invalid, we’ve always had the heating off at night. Off, not low.
But I’m old, grew up without central heating or fitted carpets mostly and my lot always had slippers and dressing gowns.
Duvets, blankets and a hot water bottle make a cozy nest.

Christonabike37 · 27/08/2022 16:11

Actually come to think of it, I rarely hear it click on during the day at that

I don’t understand this either. My plumber told me it’s more energy efficient to have the thermostat on a constant low than to keep switching on and off, because it takes more energy to heat a house from very cold to warm.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2022 16:11

Ours is off. Or set to frost setting so as good as.

This. Cold in bedrooms or I can't sleep.

Sarahconnor1 · 27/08/2022 16:11

My heating is off at night regardless of temperature, timer is a useful thing.

I honestly have no idea why heating is needed when you are in bed.

iratepirate · 27/08/2022 16:11

We just never have the central heating on. We have an Aga in the kitchen which is always on in winter and so that’s our main eating / clothes drying / homework / food prep space (and seems to keep the main part of the house warm enough that there are no damp issues) and we have a log burner in the living room which we may use in the evenings if it’s particularly cold and we’re at home watching a movie or something.
I was reading a thread earlier about babies and having heating on overnight for them and we didn’t ever do that either. 🙃
The plan for this winter is to leave it off for as long as humanly possible.

BlueReindeer · 27/08/2022 16:12

Off off. No thermostat temp for it to click in over night, so it’s colder slowly during the night but it’s manageable. The noise would annoy me during the night if it kicked in anyway

Blossomtoes · 27/08/2022 16:13

Heating goes off at 11pm and back on at 7am. We’ve never had it on at night.

DianaGarageDoors · 27/08/2022 16:14

Ours is 14 at night which means it never comes on because the house never gets that cold. Just another way of turning it off really.

MooseBreath · 27/08/2022 16:14

We keep ours at 16⁰C (day and night) and if it's freezing, turn it up to 18⁰C in the evening (maybe two weeks of evenings throughout the year). I don't turn it off, but that's because we have a toddler and will have a baby this winter. Any colder and I find that we get mould. We don't have a fireplace and don't have an alternate heat source.

I don't plan on changing our habits this year even though we can't afford the increase, and we will just be telling the energy company that we're paying what we can. I don't think our usage is in any way ridiculous.

NumberTheory · 27/08/2022 16:14

When I was a kid we just didn’t have it on at night at all. There was no thermostat, in the summer it was off and the rest of the time it was set to come on for a few hours in the morning (more at weekends) and more in the evening and then got switched on manually in the day if needed.

Now we have a thermostat, like PP we have it on the frost setting at night (which I think is around 6). I don’t think it has ever actually come on at night.

PegasusReturns · 27/08/2022 16:15

Our house would only get below 15 if we’d been away for a week and had no heating on in the day.

TriceratopsRocks · 27/08/2022 16:15

Our heating turns 'off' from 11pm to 6.30am, so it won't turn on at night however cold it is. The rest of the time it is usually set between 18 and 20 degrees, depending on how cold it is (and how cold we are!). So although it is currently 'on' in the daytime, as it is set to 18 degrees it doesn't actually fire up at all. But it always remains 'off' at night as we tend to be in bed, under covers, and with hot water bottles as necessary.

Chikapu · 27/08/2022 16:16

Do you mean at night as in when we're in bed? I wouldn't be able to sleep in a stuffy house.

Maireas · 27/08/2022 16:16

Univalve · 27/08/2022 16:11

I don’t understand this either. My plumber told me it’s more energy efficient to have the thermostat on a constant low than to keep switching on and off, because it takes more energy to heat a house from very cold to warm.

Yes, that's what we were told, so we have it on the thermostat to click on when it drops below a certain temperature.

WilmaFlintstone1 · 27/08/2022 16:16

Never have ours on at night, I can’t sleep unless it’s cold we all seem to be the same in my house. . Probably a good thing given the predicted prices.
