"We don't have the heating on"

Just reading another thread and seen this "we never have the heating on at night" and I've never really understood what it means, but now with energy prices I need to know if its really what people do.

Our thermostat is set at 15 always, in the evenings we up it to 20 for a few hours. I consider 15 off, and 20 on. Is this the same? Or do people just not have the heating on at all, like your house could be 0 degrees? How cold does it get at night? Surely it gets down to single figures most of the time?

And if you have radiators, yes it reduces the cost of you turn some off. The hot water still circulates along the pipe, but doesn't flow into the radiator and heat that entire area, so each one you turn off saves money.

In the past when on oil and in previous flat, gas, we would never have the heating on at night, just set the timer for it to be off between 10pm and 6am.

We now have an ASHP, which run best if you avoid any significant rapid changes in temperature, therefore it is better to leave it switched on with the thermostat set at 14C, then we have it at 18 or 19C during the day (if we go lower damp becomes a problem), our cottage is well insulated so it would be a rare thing for it actually to drop 4 degrees overnight anyway, so the heating won't often kick in during the night. We also leave it at 14C when we are away, so that we don't have to spend loads getting the temperature back up once back home. But ASHP are quite different to a gas or oil boiler.

We've never once had the heating on at night. It rarely drops below 12 degrees in the house.

Linnet · 27/08/2022 16:39

In the winter our heating comes on in the morning at 7am for an hour then goes off and comes on again 4:30-6:30. We don’t have a thermostat so it doesn’t click on at any point if the temperature drops. We’ve never had heat on over night. We have lots of blankets and hot water bottles and wheat bags though.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/08/2022 16:39

Ours is switched off until around September/October (or whenever it starts to get really chilly in Scotland)

Then overnight it is set as low as it can go which is 10 degrees, never been aware of it coming on.

It is scheduled on at 7am-9am, then a low temperature of around 19 degrees 5pm-9pm. Anything outside those times/or higher needs to be manually clicked on.

AlternativelyWired · 27/08/2022 16:40

Surely most boilers have timers?

Scoobyblue · 27/08/2022 16:40

I have gas central heating which is set to 18 in the day. Comes on at 6am and goes off at 10pm. It's obv not on all day as it only comes on when the house needs warming to 18. At night the house retains the heat from the day and doesn't get down to the temperature outside. Couldn't sleep with the heating on.

butterflied · 27/08/2022 16:41

Mine is off. I turn it on manually if absolutely necesarry. I haven't had the heating on this year.

BigWoollyJumpers · 27/08/2022 16:42

I set the timer, so yes, it is off overnight. Off at 10pm, back on at 7am. I have never run heating overnight, and the house doesn't get cold. Maybe a function of being the SE, but if you have had your heating on in the evening, the ambient temp takes a long time to go done. The only time we really felt the cold was when we had those two days of power cuts a few years ago. By the third day it was COLD.

Eeksteek · 27/08/2022 16:43

I use thermostats, so ours is never off. It’s on now, but set to 14°C, so the boiler never starts up.

thermostats allow me to chose a temperature that I find comfortable and appropriate for the room at the time. I don’t particularly care if there is never any heating in my bedroom, except for the thirty minutes I am getting up and dressed. I don’t mind the kitchen a bit cooler than the sitting room. But I want a warm office and sitting room. I usually go for 21°C in the office in the day and sitting room in the evenings, 17°C in the bedrooms and about 19°C everywhere else. I have smart rad valves that can be programmed to do this. They also all go off if my phone leaves the house. Which saves money nicely, (if we can afford to go out)

AntlerRose · 27/08/2022 16:43

I think people just have different heating systems with different thermostats as well as different preferences.

Like others, i cant sleep with the heating on, but with my thermostat set to 14 it doesnt really come on.
Thats with bedroom windows open and frost outside.

popandchoc · 27/08/2022 16:43

I use a timer and it comes on for a little while in the morning and then on for evening. Don't notice it not being on at night as is warm when i get in bed.

tonicwaters · 27/08/2022 16:44

Everyone has different degrees (lol) of comfort that suits them. Some do not even realise that the heating is on or off, it's timed and it's habit.

I never time it. I have a 1,2,3 hour boost and in very cold weather put it on for 2 hours at night, then an extra hour if it is really cold. Toasty warm. I am at home during the day, and never put it on in daytime unless it's absolutely baltic. Then it's an hour's boost. The water stays piping hot from the night before until I turn heat on again the following night.

I NEVER have heat on overnight. I'd melt and honestly I sleep far better in a cold room/warm bed. A very good electric blanket is your best friend.

I'm not a frugal miser at all, if I need it it's there and I will use it all day in snowy weather etc. Thankfully the house is very well insulated and it just doesn't seem to ever get that cold.

PriamFarrl · 27/08/2022 16:45

Mine goes down to 9° over night, which means it never actually comes on. It’s off entirely right now of course.

Theraffarian · 27/08/2022 16:45

Try to not switch the heating back on until October half term time , unless there is a cold spell earlier . 18 degrees on a timer from about half an hour before we get up , and turns off a couple of hours before we go to bed . Couldn’t sleep with it on because of the hum and clicks of it going on and off, and to be honest once you’re in bed I don’t really see why you would need to heat the house , but each to there own .

katepilar · 27/08/2022 16:45

For me off means off as in not on at all. How low the temperature goes down in a house or a flat depends on so many factors and is different for different houses/flats.
Not everyone has the computer thing that switches the heating on and off automatically with different temperatures for the day and for the night.

Parrotpretty · 27/08/2022 16:46

The only time mine was on at night was December 2010 and also the beast from the east. It will just be our luck for this winter to be like that one .

CaptainBarbosa · 27/08/2022 16:46

So my boiler is actually in my bedroom, and it wakes me up of it comes on.

The thermostat is on the bottom of the stairs, so I put it down to 5degrees on my way up to bed. So yes mostly it stays off.

In the morning then I put it to 18 and when I return from the school run it goes back down to 5. It stays there all day till about 5pm where it goes back up to 18 for the evening before I go up to bed about 9pm.

It's only me and DS, and I WFH/community so don't put it on in the day.

Don't get me wrong if we have like a stretch of artic weather I will keep it at 18 but generally, yes it's off for the majority of the time even in winter.

I just don't like having a hot house, and neither does DS. He lives in shorts and t-shirts in a 18 degree house. If he's cuddled up watching TV he just puts his shark blanket over himself (he's 8) I live in thick jogging bottoms, t shirt and hoody in the house with slippers so again I don't get cold. And if I want to curl up on the sofa, I also have a cream thick knit wool blanket I pop over me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

VioletInsolence · 27/08/2022 16:48

If it’s always set to 15 then you can’t time it to come on ready for when you wake up can you? I don’t have a thermostat and I just adjust the timer ….I usually set it to come on about 30 mins before the alarm goes off.

ThisisCollie2022 · 27/08/2022 16:48

Off off at night from 8pm because it's too noisy and central heating makes DH snore!

Colder air makes me sleep better too.

Bunnynames101 · 27/08/2022 16:49

I barely ever put the heating on.

I live alone and go out to work. Have blankets and spare duvet on the sofa. Two duvets on the bed. Hot water bottles everywhere (even for the pets).

I've recently had a decommission gas fire removed and I'm replacing with a fireplace I can burn wood in so hopefully I won't be quite as cold this winter. I run pretty hot so I am still comfortable at 10-12 degrees.

Abra1d1 · 27/08/2022 16:50

We very rarely have the heating on at night. Even when we stayed in a family house in the north of Scotland, it wasn't usually on at night in winter.

Somethingneedstochange · 27/08/2022 16:50

I usually turn ours off. But one night I forgot. When I went to get my daughter up she had stripped off and was lying on top of the her duvet with her hands behind her head.😂😂😂We only have it on downstairs and I'll warm the bathroom before a bath/shower.

tigger1001 · 27/08/2022 16:51

We have it on Frost setting overnight and 18 degrees during the day on a timer, to come on about an hour before we get home. Suspect it will be less than that this year.

No heating on upstairs at all as hate a warm bedroom. Windows open most of the year too in the bedrooms.

BuckarooWithBruceGrobelaar · 27/08/2022 16:51

Metalandtea · 27/08/2022 16:32

We keep ours off totally in winter apart from an hour in morning and early evening. Off completely from end of March until October. No heating overnight at any time in the year.

This is me too and even then it's only set at 18. I can't stand being too hot at night and if I'm really honest, I don't like wasting money on gas when I can just put more layers on
