"We don't have the heating on"

Christonabike37 · 27/08/2022 16:04

Just reading another thread and seen this "we never have the heating on at night" and I've never really understood what it means, but now with energy prices I need to know if its really what people do.

Our thermostat is set at 15 always, in the evenings we up it to 20 for a few hours. I consider 15 off, and 20 on. Is this the same? Or do people just not have the heating on at all, like your house could be 0 degrees? How cold does it get at night? Surely it gets down to single figures most of the time?

Ours is off completely and has been since about February. My house never feels cold but maybe I'm just used to it. It's a new build and we get a lot of sun.

sheepdogdelight · 27/08/2022 16:51

I'm starting to realise why our heating bills are so far below the average.

Never occurred to me that people would have the heating on overnight (unless you have someone particularly vulnerable in your household) - you keep warm with blankets, hot water bottles etc. Why would you heat the house when you are in bed?

BunsyGirl · 27/08/2022 16:51

We have underfloor heating. The recommendation is never to turn it off because it takes 2 to 3 hours to warm back up.

Seasidemumma77 · 27/08/2022 16:52

I have my heating 'on' 24hrs a day with thermostat at 16c, generally find it clicks on for short burst once or twice a day. Experimented with different settings over the first few winters, and for my mid terrace victoriana house, this worked out the most efficient.

Asperia · 27/08/2022 16:52

Menopausal ladies will really come into our own this winter, I've my own personal furnace!

Underroad · 27/08/2022 16:53

Mine goes completely off at night. I live in an old terraced house and even when it’s freezing outside I’ve never woken up to the temperature in the house being less than 13 degrees.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/08/2022 16:53

My plumber told me it’s more energy efficient to have the thermostat on a constant low than to keep switching on and off, because it takes more energy to heat a house from very cold to warm

Yes, that's what we were told, so we have it on the thermostat to click on when it drops below a certain temperature

I tried this in my old house that had a wireless smart meter (we have one now but it’s under the stairs). It just didn’t work for our house. We easily spent twice as much on heating without altering the thermostat at all, which we had set at i think 16 or 17 degrees. Might be because it was an old, not very well insulated house but either way it’s clearly not the thing for everyone.

Lovemusic33 · 27/08/2022 16:53

We never have the heating in at night. Last winter I had the heating in for a hour first thing in the morning and a hour in the evening (before bed), this year it won’t be going on at all if I can help it. My house is pretty warm and I don’t find it cold during the night (wear pjs if it’s cold). When I was a small child we had no heating in our house, my parents bought a old cottage and it took a few years before central heating was fitted, we survived several cold winters with no heating other than the small log burner.

Sweaterweatherisbetterweather · 27/08/2022 16:53

I like a cold bedroom
I checked the indoor temps last year and it never went below 16 .
Love snuggling under the duvet.
Our heating is rarely ever on tbh.
We light the fire and use heated throws.
Im in the SE

WhereAreMyAirpods · 27/08/2022 16:54

We don't have the heating "on" at night. The thermostat is set at 13c - INSIDE THE HOUSE - so if it gets colder than that inside the house the heating clicks on. But it never does. Even in Scotland, during the beast from the east.

The outside temperature is irrelevant. the inside temperature is what matters.

etulosba · 27/08/2022 16:54

My childhood house had just one open fire, no central heating at all

Same here, even down to scratching pictures in the frost on the windows. It wasn’t ideal but, as a result, I don’t think I am quite as concerned about lower temperatures in the house as some on MN appear to be.

Our heating is never on at night and that seems pretty normal amongst the few real life people I have discussed heating with. During the day it is set to come on first thing in the morning and in the evening. I can monitor the temperature with pretty graphs and the temperature has never reached single figures, even when the house has been empty for a month in winter. Though I suppose it would eventually reach equilibrium with the outdoor temperature with no heating on at all.

With the impending increase in the price cap, I have just altered the schedule to only come in the evening and dropped the temperature to 17 degrees.

We do have the option of adding heat to some rooms with solid fuel, so may do that when necessary.

Karwomannghia · 27/08/2022 16:54

Since our digital thermostat broke we just literally turn the dial to on or off. In winter I turn it off about an hour before bed and switch it on when I make a cup of tea in the morning and off again when I go to work. Then after school/ work whoever wants it on puts it on. Simple!

I don’t understand this either. My plumber told me it’s more energy efficient to have the thermostat on a constant low than to keep switching on and off, because it takes more energy to heat a house from very cold to warm.

We tried both ways over two different winters when we first moved into this house and were still working it out. It cost us twice as much to keep it on low than it did just turning it on when we needed it.

Creameggs223 · 27/08/2022 16:55

I wake up all stuffy and dry throat if heating is on over night mine goes off at 8 house still warm when I go to bed.

kittensinthekitchen · 27/08/2022 16:56

Overnight? No.

I'm not sure how our thermostat works. I'm not sure if

milveycrohn · 27/08/2022 16:56

At night, I have the heating on 'eco' mode which is about 10 degrees.
So, it is as good as being off, but if it got really cold, it would come on. But the temperature never dips below about 15, which is really cold anyway.
Definitely do not have it on at 'normal' temperature.

PlanetNormal · 27/08/2022 16:57

Our heating has been turned off completely since early May. Assuming the weather doesn’t get unseasonably cold it won’t be turned on again until October. We are in the Leicestershire, which isn’t the coldest part of the U.K. so fingers crossed we don’t need it on earlier.

etulosba · 27/08/2022 16:57

The outside temperature is irrelevant. the inside temperature is what matters.

I’ve never understood why some people turn up the internal thermostat when it is really cold outside.

NothingIsWrong · 27/08/2022 16:57

Ours has been completely off since the end of March. But we do have a log burner as well which takes the edge off the living room, and then socks and pyjamas and slippers to go to bed.

Planning to try and keep it off as long as possible, but it's an old stone cottage so it gets damp in the winter with no heating at all. Thermostat is on 19 in the winter, from 5.45-7.15 in the morning (we are all out by 7.30 typically) and then from 6-9pm in the evening.

BeyondPurpleTulips · 27/08/2022 16:58

Mine is usually on (in late autumn/winter/early spring) 6-8am and 4-6pm, same as the hot water. No thermostats, but radiators set to 1. I also open the windows at night, no matter how cold, as I prefer to sleep with fresh air.

kittensinthekitchen · 27/08/2022 16:58

Let's try that again!

I'm not sure if it works. I've never been able to make it do anything. Our heating is set for an hour in the morning, a couple of hours in the evening. This timer is only ever switched on after October 1st, and goes off April 1st.

I'm amazed by the number of people who claim since the energy cap went up in April, they've not been able to afford to heat their house. Why on earth would you need central heating on during this time of year??

stopitstopitnow · 27/08/2022 17:00

I never have the heating on overnight. It goes off at 8.30pm and back on again at 4.15 for an hour (I get up at 4.30 during the week so just to take the chill off).

I'm in Scotland too. The inside temperature of my house went down to 8, that's when my heating is set to come on to stop it going lower so it probably would have been colder without.

My house is in the middle of fields. It gets cold around here.

@Asperia Made me laugh!

I’ve just started HRT and could generate enough heat for the entire flipping village!

Ours is broke too and we also have to turn it on and off when we want…

Iv never had the heating on overnight though. I didn’t even know people did that. You are asleep under a thick duvet so it doesn’t really matter how cold the house is as you are warm in bed.
