To think these energy price predictions are just scaremongering now

Butterflyfluff · 26/08/2022 20:07

The annual energy price predictions are literally going up by about £500 a day.

There’s absolutely no way most people can sustain £4/5/600 per month energy bills for any length of time.

I'm starting to think it’s all a ploy to just get people to reduce consumption - scare the shit out of people so they use less.

It’s a combination of greed and political incompetence. You should be absolutely fucking raging that we’re in this position, I am.

sst1234 · 26/08/2022 20:11

It’s being done as part of social conditioning. Or economic conditioning, come to think of it. If they tell you, your energy bill is going to be £1bn a year, you will thank them and call them your saviour when they tell you they managed to get it down to £1m a year.

Big pharma had their payday over the last two years. Big defence is doing nicely out of Ukraine v Russia. It’s big energy’s turn next. It’ll be the banks again after that and on it goes.

I mean, this is conspiracy nonsense but regardless: it’ll still cost you.

Grumpybutfunny · 26/08/2022 20:15

It's not a ploy we are in an economic war with Russia one of the world super powers and this is the fall out. I do hope it's time for sustainable solutions like nuclear and solar power. I would much rather they offered discounted solar panels and air source heat pumps over another handout to the energy companies

Maybe you’ve never heard of lobbying. Look it up. You might learn something.

Lobbying before the start of the cold weather ie next week? Good luck.

AnneLovesGilbert · 26/08/2022 20:18

There’s way more denial going on than scaremongering. I get it, people are scared and want to stick their heads in the sand. But it’s not helpful.

PestorPeston · 26/08/2022 20:19

It is not predictions, it is fact.

Today it was announced that the cost of energy for domestic premises is going up by 80% on 1st October.

Have a quick read www.ofgem.gov.uk/check-if-energy-price-cap-affects-you

Butterflyfluff · 26/08/2022 20:27

Totally agree there’s the other end of the spectrum that think the price rises won’t affect them

But seriously - £7k a year fuel bills?

It’s literally incomprehensible and completely unachievable for many.

And for most those who can afford to pay it, it’s at the expense of discretionary spending which will trash the leisure/ tourism/ hospitality / beauty industry.

I don’t think it is scaremongering. I think it is the start of the societal breakdown because of over reliance on fossil fuels .it has been predicted for decades and decades.

Yes I agree it’s the cost of being in a proxy war with Russia

I have thought or hoped that winter will be the peak due to demand peaking

I can’t see the war stopping soon which is a downer

Exactly - it’s fucking scary

It's scary. But not for the reasons you have listed.

Rumplestrumpet · 26/08/2022 20:31

Terrifying? Yes. Scaremongering? No.

Scaremongering is when it's baseless and just worrying people for no reason. These prise rises WILL happen in the coming months and most people are rightly terrified.

I know we have enough extra to cover the costs, but I am still so worried for all those around me who can't.

Butterflyfluff · 26/08/2022 20:34

Prices are going to rise - I’m not doubting that.

But there’s absolutely no way the average family can afford £7k per year on energy alone so something has to give.

OP posts:
sst1234 · 26/08/2022 20:34

In the next few months, Russia either annexes a part of Donbas or declares it a non-militarised zone under Ukraine’s control. Then de-escalation starts. Overall gas production increases as sanctions on Russia ease and because Iran, US, Qatar and China all put their foot on the gas (literally), in creasing production.

But guess what, energy prices don’t return to pre-conflict levels. They go down by 20, maybe 30% and everyone lets off a sigh of relief. It’s realpolitik.

Mumofsend · 26/08/2022 20:36

I find the whole thing overwhelmingly frightening. I also find it frightening how much bad advice is circulating on social media. So many families and humans are going full speed into disaster

Terrified by the news. Sound familiar? It’s like no one even remembers the last episode.

I hope you’re right about the next few months

I don’t let the news scare me but I also can see the war being prolonged which would be bad

EmmaH2022 · 26/08/2022 20:45

Really interesting point OP.

Obviously linked to green agenda but I do think the prices will be real, sadly.

War is very good for certain businesses - the kind of businesses that the people who really run the show are invested in. Not so good for the rest of us, but when did they ever care about that?

Batshittery · 26/08/2022 20:51

It's not scaremongering. It's reality. It's happening. I do agree that it's not sustainable
