To love crows

Frivolous thread.

Sick of doom and gloom.

I absolutely love crows . All corvids really but crows are just ace .

I love the way they stand in the road like "come on then car ....come and have a go if you think you're hard enough "

I love their attitude. I love how they walk .

I'd love to find a baby crow or a raven that needed rearing . They're just so hard !
Recently saw a you tube video of. Crow that fed a mouse that was trying it's luck with a bread bun the crow had ....crow broke a bit off and took it to the mouse .
That is one intelligent bird . I love them.

I like all corvids but my favourites are Ravens, Crows and magpies. They all look rather magnificent as they purposefully strut around! They are very intelligent birds.

Joke:

The police found over 2000 dead crows on highways recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was NOT Avian Flu.

The cause of death appeared to be from vehicular impacts.

However, during analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws. By analyzing these paint residues, it was found that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with motorbikes, while only 2% were killed by cars.

They then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of motorbike kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviorist quickly concluded that when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow to warn of danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout “CAH!”, not a single one could shout “BIKE!”

SmileSmileSmileSmile still laughing!

I've seen a crow using a car to crack a nut. I then moved the nut onto the pavement for him or her.
We have one around my way who makes a very odd sound, never heard a bird noise like it, had googled ferociously for over a year trying to identify this bird noise.

Then was out in the garden one day and the crow up on the roof made the noise!! It's got a musical tone to it, quite unlike normal Corvid noises

I've also seen a magpie funeral. Where I use to love was up in the eaves and a magpie somehow ended dead in this sort of drainage channel around my flat.

Three magpies came two mornings in a row to look at it. Felt like they knew they had lost someone close to them.

And I miss the Jackdaws we had at another place I loved at.

Love some Corvids, me!!!

I Love them too. Such gorgeous clever birds. I want to hand rear one too. I've heard if you're kind to them they will remember forever, same if you're nasty to them.

I have a cat so I don't want to tempt them into my garden though. They hang around a green area down the road so I was thinking when I walk past daily I should take some food and try and tame them and be friends with them.

Our local nature centre had a Raven that could talk. He'd been there for many years and died recently and there were lots of Facebook tributes to him.

stillvicarinatutu · 26/08/2022 17:38

Funnily enough I've heard crows mimic other noises when I've been out walking, one mimicked other birds and also a phone ringing!

BarryBantam · 26/08/2022 19:47

Other birds mimic noises too. There's a blackbird nearby that has an entire repertoire of phone noises and tune fragments.

IdiotCreatures · 26/08/2022 19:56

Starlings are also known for this.

I love birds, find them fascinating.

I once said to DD, imagine if the world has no birds in it, how different and not good it would be.

She didn't get it 😞

IcakethereforeIam · 26/08/2022 20:00

I love that they're essentially tiny dinosaurs.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/08/2022 20:23

I used to live at the top of a hill overlooking a bowl shaped depression and large road junction and in Autumn, the corvids (mostly crows, hooded crows and rooks, but a few Jays and Magpies would hang around on the fringes) would take turns surfing the different layers of wind - sometimes I could see 30-40-odd of them and when they got turfed out of a particularly swirly bit, I could hear them laughing.

The best thing was when they'd hang out on the roof and grounds of my large block of flats, though - there would be a bunch of them scuttling about on the ground and the local grumpy tomcat would lumber into view of the three on the roof/top floor balconies like min. They always shouted exactly the same phrase - RAKRAK! as he came along - and they'd fly up until he went home or fell asleep in the sunshine on the bin shed roof, where once, they kept on getting closer and closer to him, muttering rakrak, and making a sound almost like ohhhhhhhhHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH RAKRAK!!!!!!!!!!! to startle him awake. The icing on the cake with that one was as he slunk off, pretending he hadn't just been bullied by them, one of the buggers went Meeee-owwwwww and the others cracked up, going RAARAARAARAAAAA!.😂

DP and his Dad had a Jackdaw where they lived that had fallen out of a nest in a big storm. He lived in the aviary with his Dad's budgies and used to shout at any passing hedgehogs.

It's really obvious with the corvids, isn't it?

JaceLancs · 26/08/2022 20:28

Years ago I had a pet crow - we nursed him when he hurt his wing and named him Cecil
I think he was quite young
After a few months we started to encourage him to go further afield - thankfully he met his Cecilia and left up for hopefully a happy life ❤️

JaceLancs · 26/08/2022 20:28

Us not up grrrr

AffIt · 26/08/2022 20:43

My late dad had a pet crow that he hand-reared after it was kicked out of the nest.

The relationship they had was amazing.

Definitely, though it might be because Jurassic Park dinosaurs may have been modelled after them. 'Tiny' is obviously relative, a crow the size of a cassowary would be terrifying

Magpies are really beautiful, I think we take them for granted because they're common. Starlings, in their starry plumage, are one of the most gorgeous British birds..

FartNRoses · 26/08/2022 21:24

@stillvicarinatutu i completely agree with you!

Allow me to introduce you to my pet crow, Jasper! He’s amazing (well, I say it’s a ‘he’ but not really sure). He’s totally bonkers but I love him. He allows me to feed him, pet him, hold him and he is always following me around!

To love crows
FartNRoses · 26/08/2022 21:25

Oh and his favourite place is on top of my head, which is a bit of a problem because he shits everywhere 💩

Happylittlethoughts · 26/08/2022 21:33

Now here's a thread I can get behind! I'd love a crows friend. I gaze at them wistfully and just last night I was sure the crow in Asda car park wanted to be my friend 🙃 My daughter thought no - it was more likely looking to mug me!
Off to tell her crows go back to visit their parents .

SizzlerFizzler · 26/08/2022 21:36

Unforgettablefire · 26/08/2022 16:01

My neighbour used to feed them and they'd line pebbles up for her on her wall.

The dream. I'd love pebbly offerings from some crow pals.

AuntMasha · 26/08/2022 16:23

One of our crows left us a roll-up cigarette butt as a present. It was placed right by our door. I think he must have seen one of the workmen in our area smoking and thought we’d like it!

thoughtful little darling.

SizzlerFizzler · 26/08/2022 21:39

Muminabun · 26/08/2022 16:31

I love them so much, I talk to them and they leave bottle tops and other treasure where I put the feed out. They are also fantastic parents and so patient with their squawking youngsters. Totally agree with you op and they should get more love.

Awwww, who wouldn't want some bottle tops! A wonderful bartering system you've go there.

SizzlerFizzler · 26/08/2022 21:40

@FartNRoses, Jasper is GORGEOUS!

FartNRoses · 26/08/2022 21:43

@SizzlerFizzler thank you.

He knows it too 😉

Jasper is gorgeous. I had a bit of a hope I would end up with a crow companion a few years ago. Almighty noise in the back courtyard and I discovered a young one on the ground, hopping around. He was startled and ran into a gap between a fence and a wall. Attempts to lure him out with shreds of Waitrose Duchy Organics lamb mince (reduced) failed so I shut the courtyard door (because dog) and Googled.

I had no idea they spend time on the ground with the parents nearby as part of getting ready for Crow Life. He finally emerged from the gap, much to my relief, looking very disgruntled and covered in cobwebs. I left him to it (with the mince and a saucer of water) and next morning he was gone.

His name was Jeremy (Corvid)
