To think rooms and carpets will come back into fashion

The current fashion for wooden floors and open plan layouts has been popular for years. I'm start to find myself drawn to separate rooms and very large rugs or carpets.
Do you think the fashion will change soon? Especially with heating bills soaring?

Open plan works well for us. Food smells escaping the kitchen are occasionally an annoyance, but it doesn't happen often, and I'm not sure a door would make that much difference, tbh. We have a quiet dishwasher, the washing machine is closed off in the utility room, and it's rare that one of us is cooking noisily while the other is trying to watch read or watch TV in the lounge.

We're fortunate to have other rooms we can retreat to if we feel the need for privacy or time apart. Once in a while one of us will do something (play music) that might slightly annoy the other with the noise level, but in that case, we can use headphones, go to one of the rooms with doors, or take a walk. I will concede, however, that if we had teenagers I'd prefer to have more room separation.

Not carpets, they are disgusting esp if you have pets. But the first thing I did when I moved into my house was get some extra doors put in. Fortunately, it was built with doors but at some point someone took all the downstairs ones out to make it open plan.

I hate carpets personally. We only have one on the stairs /upstairs hallway and DS was sick all over it the other night trying to run to the bathroom. It’s horrible to clean up off carpet compared to wooden floors. I just feel like it’s really unhygienic too, I can’t clean it in the same way I do the rest of the house.

This is another reason we are a shoes off household. It keeps a lot of outdoor dirt out of the house. I know this is a contentious topic here but it works for us. Slippers keep our carpets clean along with regular hoovering. Much warmer, too.

SeemsSoUnfair · 25/08/2022 18:44

I don't think closed rooms, or carpets will come back into "fashion", anyone with any sense, or lucky enough to have space didn't follow the "fashion" in the first place.

"Open plan" is a con to sell people tiny homes or in offices a way to cram more people uncomfortably into smaller and therefore cheaper spaces. Both are impractical and not particularly pleasant to be in.

As for carpets being an issue because they are unhygienic 🙄, how many of you are licking your carpets anyway!

FunnyNC · 25/08/2022 18:45

I have a cat and my carpets are not disgusting 😂 I do use my carpet cleaner every couple of months so I can see that my carpets aren't any dirtier than what the mop water is like.

Titsflyingsouth · 25/08/2022 18:48

I'm a big fan of carpets tbh. Keep the house warmer, keep noise down....

KimberleyClark · 25/08/2022 18:51

I have rooms, woodblock flooring everywhere downstairs except the kitchen which is tiled, carpets on stairs landing and bedrooms, laminate ate in the bathroom.

Grumpybutfunny · 25/08/2022 18:52

I think more and more garages will be converted into snuggs so people can keep open plan family space. With underfloor heating I don't find open plan that cold.

gogohmm · 25/08/2022 18:55

Upstairs living rooms in town houses are the best idea, ours is on the middle floor - always warm even without any heating (thanks to the generous neighbours heating their houses Grin)

But you can mop daily. Carpets keep that dirt in until they’re cleaned, not just vacuumed. I think most people don’t clean their carpets more than once a year.

goinggreatthanks · 25/08/2022 18:56

@FunnyNC mine scratch the carpet rather than dirty them up. You’re lucky if you have non-scratchy cats!!

LaurieFairyCake · 25/08/2022 18:56

I've never had open plan and I've lived in about 35 places

I hate it, I love small rooms with defined purpose - sitting room/dining room/library/office/kitchen

I don't even like eating in the kitchen - on my lap in front of the tv or the dining room

bellac11 · 25/08/2022 18:58

Ive always hated open plan, it put us off a lot of houses

But I dont like carpet, hard floors with nice big rugs with a border around the edge of the wooden floor

My next thing is that I want wood look ceramic tiles

Doublevodka · 25/08/2022 19:01

I have open plan downstairs and absolutely love it. I feel it has massively improved our living space and could never go back to a separate kitchen. Previous homes I lived in were all separate rooms and I hated cooking on my own in the kitchen when everyone else was in another room chatting. I can understand why people like separate rooms but I’ll always have open plan, even if it goes out of fashion. I love wooden floors with rugs too. I feel like I can clean everywhere properly. It would be boring if we all liked exactly the same thing.

FunnyNC · 25/08/2022 19:03

@goinggreatthanks no he scratches my lovely bench by my front door 🙄 but the carpets and sofas are safe.

I had shit laminate when my dc were little, and leather sofas. Was very happy when I could make the transition to lovely sofas that weren't cold and carpets that feel so lovely to walk on. I do agree carpets and fabric sofas are minging with little dc around.

Leafy3 · 25/08/2022 19:04

I like both carpets and wooden floors, but would opt for floorboards downstairs, especially in high traffic areas for practicality.

Carpets are easier to manage with a House Spouse.

We used to have those enormous rugs with a border, usually in a rich red or blue and they still lovely and cosy when you see them.

Badger1970 · 25/08/2022 19:04

I hate open plan. Our house is very traditional with a separate living room and dining room and I love the layout. We are looking to move but can't find anything suitable in the area.

I wish Rightmove had a filter to remove anything open plan, with navy or grey kitchens and bifold doors!

Londontown12 · 25/08/2022 19:05

I have separate rooms and 3 years ago i replaced the wooden flooring with the old fashioned Axminster carpets in the living room bedroom and hallway !
There all different patterns but I love vintage homes ! X

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 19:06

Carpets keep that dirt in until they’re cleaned, not just vacuumed

They don’t. You only have to look at the hoover contents after you’ve vacuumed to see that.

Runmybathforme · 25/08/2022 19:07

I love open plan, would never go back to rooms. I have a loft style flat, my partner has normal open plan. Love cooking and chatting, much more sociable and cosy. My sister has a huge open plan, but also has a separate sitting room, which is ideal with kids.
Carpets ? Upstairs only.

FlorettaB · 25/08/2022 19:08

You get some dirt out by vacuuming but not all the dirt.

Elphame · 25/08/2022 19:10

Separate rooms here and carpets too. I am so out of fashion but don't really care.

I can't bear the noise of the dogs claws on wooden floor, especially laminate style ones. Oddly the thick Georgian oak floor we have in the hallway is fine. Their nails don't click on that one.

dontcallmelen · 25/08/2022 19:24

HippyDippieTrees · 25/08/2022 17:02

I have rooms, decent carpets and decent underlay. I don't have curtains. Do you think curtains really make a difference?

They really do, when I was decorating recently & waiting for new curtains I was surprised how echoey the room was & definitely colder curtains muffle sound help with draughts.
I have a kitchen/diner plus separate dining room & front room I like that we can have some separation plus easier to keep warm we have wooden floors in the kitchen/diner & dining room carpet in the frontroom & bedroom/landing/stairs.

soupmaker · 25/08/2022 19:27

1930's end terrace here. We've got rooms, original wooden floors and rugs in the rooms we live in. Hardwood in hall and kitchen. Works for us. But I do love open plan when on holiday.

RewildingAmbridge · 25/08/2022 19:29

Rooms yes, was to wall carpeting downstairs, no. If you have pets or children wood floors are much easier to keep clean, in terms of stains, spills and pet hair
