To think rooms and carpets will come back into fashion

The current fashion for wooden floors and open plan layouts has been popular for years. I'm start to find myself drawn to separate rooms and very large rugs or carpets.
Do you think the fashion will change soon? Especially with heating bills soaring?

I have both carpets and rooms.

When we were buying our home, I specifically wanted two reception rooms, as opposed to open plan, as it's nice to have different spaces to do different things. Our rooms aren't huge though.

I hate laminate flooring, so have always had carpet. I'd have real wood flooring, but can't afford that at the moment.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 25/08/2022 16:18

Never went out of fashion as far as I am concerned.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/08/2022 16:19

I like a kitchen/diner, but otherwise hate open plan. And I love carpets. Much warmer and less echoey than hard floors, and my dog prefers them too.

Agree with PP about patterned carpets.

WonderingWanda · 25/08/2022 16:20

Carpets wear out and look tatty, if you buy wool you get carpet beetles or moths, if you buy plastic then they aren'/ very good for the environment. A wooden floor with a rug that can be changed is much more durable. Also easy to whiz round with a broom to clean it which saves getting the energy guzzling Dyson out.

Sooveritallnow · 25/08/2022 16:20

I have open plan and wooden floors and hate it. It is cold and dusty all the time and I hate not being able to close off kitchen, cooking smells etc, or just heat one room.
Am looking to move and will definitely buy something with defined rooms and carpet the lot.

I have separate rooms and carpet, apart from the kitchen and bathroom. Open plan and wooden flooring always feels cold to me.

Same!

Arbesque · 25/08/2022 16:20

Years ago, before fitted carpets people used to have very large rugs with a border of polished boards showing.
I think that looks lovely. Wooden flooring throughout suits modern apartments but makes houses look quite bare and cold.

We have carpets upstairs , hall and stairs , hard floors/tiles elsewhere

Rugs are a bloody trip hazard , I don't trust them.

SizzlerFizzler · 25/08/2022 16:25

I like carpets in bedrooms and wooden floors with rugs downstairs.

Open plan kitchen/diners will stay but entirely open plan is nor conducive to harmonious family life.

badbaduncle · 25/08/2022 16:28

I hate open plan because it is so cold and noisy! I like small rooms you can heat and clean quickly, and a nice thick carpet.
I grew up in the tropics and would love to live there now with a tiled floor, massive high ceilings and huge windows. In the UK that's bloody stupid imo!

Moonshine5 · 25/08/2022 16:29

No, however personally I appreciate the segregation!

Allmarbleslost · 25/08/2022 16:33

I lived with wooden floors for 15 years but have carpet now. I love having lovely warm feet!

dudsville · 25/08/2022 16:38

Our house is very old fashioned, we have all the original internal walls and doors. The sound proofing is amazing, and, as a pp above commented upon, it will be easy to close off much of the house when heating this winter. We also love carpet. My only problem with it is that it's not environemtally friendly, but ours can be bleached, and it's warm uder foot. A decade on it still looks new.

TheOrigRights · 25/08/2022 16:38

It seems I am ahead of the trend already. We have carpet everywhere except the bathroom and kitchen and every room has a door.
I don't think I am unusual.

Sartre · 25/08/2022 16:38

I hate carpets personally. We only have one on the stairs /upstairs hallway and DS was sick all over it the other night trying to run to the bathroom. It’s horrible to clean up off carpet compared to wooden floors. I just feel like it’s really unhygienic too, I can’t clean it in the same way I do the rest of the house.

Burnt0utMum · 25/08/2022 16:44

We have separate rooms, which I think is one of the main things I look for in a house. It's nice to have separate spaces with their own uses. The kitchen is typically quite loud with the washer dryer or the dishwasher on a lot or cooking sounds. That would get on my nerves if I couldn't move away from it when working or watching TV. We do have laminate floor throughout at the moment with a nice thick rug in the living room. We chose this because the kids are just so messy and I knew it would be a nightmare with carpet. We've chose a nice light colour and I'm still really happy with it. Maybe when the kids are older I'd consider carpet but that won't be any time soon.

TheOrigRights · 25/08/2022 16:46

...and yes, I often like to be where my 13yo son isn't!

fyn · 25/08/2022 16:49

We are looking for a house at the moment and are discounting anything open plan. We’d liked separate rooms, specifically space for an out of the way playroom!

Still desperate to get rid of the carpets, wooden works a lot better with shedding pets!

Riverlee · 25/08/2022 16:52

I hate open plan. I shudder (not literally) when I see the makeover programmes and they’ve knocked down walls so the lounge, kitchen, eating area is all in one room. However, dh likes open plan so compromised on kitchen/diner, and separate lounge.

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 16:55

tillytoodles1 · 25/08/2022 15:50

I have separate rooms and carpet, apart from the kitchen and bathroom. Open plan and wooden flooring always feels cold to me.

We do too. Our draughty 400 year old house would be intolerable without carpet. I think you’re right @Arbesque, fashion will definitely swing back again.

BabyShaark · 25/08/2022 16:55

I hate open plan. When we were house hunting, my only requirement was no open plan kitchen. I found it quite amusing when estate agents tried to sell the idea to us as if it was a good thing. Those properties weren’t even looked at.

i do like carpets as well. They make rooms look cosy. Except for bathrooms of course.

Timeturnerplease · 25/08/2022 16:58

I think open plan is on its way out now isn’t it? We moved last year and the estate agent told us he sells fewer open plans every year.

I can’t bear carpet but that’s a personal opinion. I find wooden flooring neater and easier to clean.

Whiskeypowers · 25/08/2022 16:59

chillipenguin · 25/08/2022 15:56

Carpet in the bathroom used to be a thing. I hope that never comes back.

I have big machine washable rugs that are rubber backed and stick down well as I am terrified of slipping on wet flooring as I did once and nearly crashed through the glass shower screen

ChocolateCakeYum · 25/08/2022 17:01

We purposely chose a house that wasn’t open plan when we were looking to buy. I hate open plan. I like separate spaces. I like quiet areas. I don’t like being able to smell cooking everywhere or hear the TV. Urgh.

HippyDippieTrees · 25/08/2022 17:02

I have rooms, decent carpets and decent underlay. I don't have curtains. Do you think curtains really make a difference?
