To wonder how people will financially survive?

To think that many people are struggling already. Food price rises, gas and electric costs. The general cost of living due to inflation from either brexit since the pandemic and Ukraine war. But come on some people were struggling before any of those factors. Financially people will be pushed to breaking christmas will be off the cards general life will stagnate no meals out leisure activities cinema socialising new clothes treat foods. The threat of blackouts and wondering how we will pay bills to keep warm or keep a house running. Never mind buying food the price of it plus the large gaps on shelves. Winter will be miserable. It's becoming impossible to live in this country.

The government will do something too late, going to be rough for lots

Christmasiscominghohoho · 25/08/2022 14:04

It’s going to be shit for a lot of people but there will also be a lot of people that can afford all this.
The people that can’t afford it will go into debt to pay for things.

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 14:05

People will die. It’s as stark and simple as that. Pensioners and people with disabilities on fixed incomes won’t be able to keep warm and fed.

Dotjones · 25/08/2022 14:08

People who've already cut out all the non-essentials will start cutting down on the essentials too. That's how I think people will survive the winter. Skipping meals, not changing clothes every day, heating only for the bitterest days.

People will suffer, get ill and die. But we've been conditioned to that being the case over the past couple of years. Government will be reluctant to help much with the coming winter crisis because they know that people have short memories - help given today will be forgotten as soon as the money is spent.

I bought a shit load of tealight candles a few years ago when I was going through an survivalist/prepper phase. I can boil hot water using these, takes a while but is "free" in the sense that I pissed the money away a long time ago. Likewise I will use them for lighting as much as possible.

FarmerRefuted · 25/08/2022 14:09

There'll be an increase in poverty which has all sorts of knock on effects. Crime will increase, especially things like shoplifting, theft, and burglary. Education outcomes will lower. Health will worsen.

Zebedee55 · 25/08/2022 14:10

Johnson has basically said the British people "will have to suck it up" with high energy bills, as Ukraine needs supporting and are suffering more. He then gave them another £54 million.🙄

BorgQueen · 25/08/2022 14:15

I think we will have a huge spate of house fires due to people not using candles safely and lighting fires in unswept chimneys. Not to mention people risking death and destruction by bypassing meters.

Neverendingdust · 25/08/2022 14:19

Many won’t survive -that’s the bare bones of it. Winter ‘22 is not going to be easy.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 25/08/2022 14:21

Think very carefully about who you vote for at the general election next year.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 25/08/2022 14:25

I earn a 'good' wage. However this increase in COL comes as my eldest daughter turns 18 meaning my income will go down at the same time my rent is going up alongside everything else that is rising.

I have a plan that involves showering at the gym (I've already paid in advance for a year) to save energy and eating lunch at work - as that is provided. It may become that that is my only meal that day, and it may not be my ideal meal but I know I'm guaranteed a hot meal Mon-Fri.

It completely blows my mind that I'm having to even consider this as a plan. Many people won't have access to a hot meal, or a warm shower etc, it's going to be awful.

DenholmElliot1 · 25/08/2022 14:25

no meals out leisure activities cinema socialising new clothes treat foods

I'm lucky in the sense that I will be able to sacrifice the above in order to pay for essential heating and food. The fact that I have meals out, leisure activities, cinema, socialising, new clothes and treat foods at the moment means I have some wiggle room. It won't be forever.

Trainfromredhill · 25/08/2022 14:28

@Dotjones not changing clothes every day

Unless you specifically mean underwear this is not essential. In fact I’d go as far as to say it was wasteful and not at all environmentally friendly. I wear the same clothes until they are actually dirty or smell, because, aside from any financial or environment concerns, why would I make more work for myself?

treetopspot · 25/08/2022 14:28

I think it will kill more people than covid.

There is no general election scheduled for next year.

Your daughter can get a job and contribute to your household bills now that she’s eighteen, which hopefully can make all the difference.

The only upside I can think of is that it might put an end to some of the insane laundry habits I read about on MN. 😉

MintJulia · 25/08/2022 14:42

I grew up in an unheated house in the south of the UK. We were a fsm family and while we had enough food, it was of the less expensive kind. My df grew a lot of veg, everything was home cooked, no takeaways, no ready meals, no snack. Lots of potatoes, toast etc.
People will survive but it isn't fun. It hits the old and the vulnerable worst. Families and communities will need to watch over their own.

girlmom21 · 25/08/2022 14:44

Some people will die. Some people will turn to crime. Lots of people will get poorly and need lots of help from our already struggling health service.

RayneDance · 25/08/2022 14:47

Mint same , but people need time to get veg patches going and grow stuff..
Our huge bonus was having a real fire and I bitterly regret not having one ,nor a woodburner because that would be a bit of independent control over our lives away from these energy companies.

We had proper backed armchairs with wings to curl up in by the fire, and keep away from drafts.

I'd happily do that again but we have no fire..

This is going to be far worse than COVID , because people still had money moslty in COVID and that money was spent.

People won't have any money, and it will be a spiraling dire knock on effect!

Apparently to sort out a loan to or from energy companies that would costs 100 million?
Boris's has just magicked up 54 million for Ukraine.

That's all the government need to do. Feeze price's and so the loan.

Otherwise I'm.genuinly scared and I wasn't scared during 2007 cc nor COVID.

Redqueenheart · 25/08/2022 14:48

I think this will all end with a general strikes and public unrest and then a general election being called early. Truss will be a disaster and people are close to breaking point. In the meantime people will continue to dies and suffer needlessly.

RayneDance · 25/08/2022 14:48

And yes, if we ever move a fireplace is going to be a must.

WhatdoImean · 25/08/2022 14:48

"People will survive" - Yes, most people will survive. But some will not.

What does it says of us as a 21st century society when we come up with "People will survive" as something that excuses a large number of people dying?

It is like going back to the 1920s rather than the 2020s....

Blossomtoes · 25/08/2022 14:51

RayneDance · 25/08/2022 14:48

And yes, if we ever move a fireplace is going to be a must.

We’ve just had a multi fuel burner installed. Watch the price of logs go through the ceiling now!

Suzi888 · 25/08/2022 14:52

They will- stock up now if you can.

RadioRouge · 25/08/2022 14:52

If our energy direct debit quadruples then carries on going up and our mortgage goes up significantly we will really struggle on two "normal" wages. I can't imagine how people on Universal Credit or a state pension will afford to eat, let alone go to the dentist or buy new glasses etc.

Both the children will need a full set of new school uniform next year. Dreading it already.
