To wonder how people will financially survive?

Cupcakeicecream · 25/08/2022 14:00

To think that many people are struggling already. Food price rises, gas and electric costs. The general cost of living due to inflation from either brexit since the pandemic and Ukraine war. But come on some people were struggling before any of those factors. Financially people will be pushed to breaking christmas will be off the cards general life will stagnate no meals out leisure activities cinema socialising new clothes treat foods. The threat of blackouts and wondering how we will pay bills to keep warm or keep a house running. Never mind buying food the price of it plus the large gaps on shelves. Winter will be miserable. It's becoming impossible to live in this country.

Oh that's ok then @NeedNotWantNot

RadioRouge · 25/08/2022 17:10

@Carpy88999 Don't we care about the people who won't?

Of course and that's where the help should be aimed at. I'm not well off by any stretch but I don't need the council tax help or the energy payment. I'd much rather it go to those who really do need it.

NeedNotWantNot · 25/08/2022 16:57

People have unrealistic expectations. Living standards, even for people on the dole or state pension, are far higher than they were in the 1950s, 60s, 70s. There is no choice between heating and eating. It's eating. When I was a child we could not afford heating. We couldn't afford a duvet, and had mum's coat on top of the blankets. Ice would form on the inside of the windows overnight from the water vapour in out breath. No car, no phone, rented TV. Second hand shoes, or clothes. The hyperbolic language about being able to "survive" and it being "impossible to live", or going back to the 1920s or 1930s is ridiculous. People need to stop complaining and get a sense of proportion.

How sad that people who grew up in hardship want to inflict the same suffering on younger generations, rather than hoping for a better society.

So bitter and mean.

I would rather live in a country where people aren't suffering inadequately heated homes or going hungry while others have more money than they can ever hope to spend.

Ffs! This utterly pathetic left wing”the government must have all the solutions” shit is really STUNNING. Do people not understand history or politics AT ALL.
In 1914 and again in 1938, power hungry dictators (German in those instances) decided that they wanted to take over areas of Europe for their own glory/power/wealth. The whole of Europe (& then America) agreed to sacrifice their fucking sons and live through years of bombings, death and untold hardship and it plunged the world into a 10 year depression but THANK GOD they did. The world would look very different if they hadn’t.
The same thing is happening again with a Russian dictator this time but thanks to technology and geopolitics, we are only being asked to turn down the heating and put a fucking jumper on and accept a 20% inflationary rise and the hysteria is unbelievable. We are not being bombed and none of our children are being sent to war. Ffs!! Interesting that it’s the left wing mainly remoaners that suddenly want to cut and run and leave their Ukrainians to deal with the greatest threat to Western European life since 1938. And this is off the back of a fucking global pandemic where again ‘the government’ were expected to magic up solutions.
Ffs …. Be very grateful that this is all we are being asked to do. Or would you rather just send ‘thoughts and prayers’ to Ukrainian people whilst buying Russian gas and oil cos it’s a bit hard not too. It’s shameful

The energy price hikes began long before the war in Ukraine as did the rise in inflation. Of course the war has not helped but it is only part of the reason for the mess we are on. But you have fallen for the lies of Johnson and his cabinet of liars.

I earn a 'good' wage. However this increase in COL comes as my eldest daughter turns 18 meaning my income will go down

How come your income goes down?

ShelfyMcShelfface · 25/08/2022 17:51

Trainfromredhill · 25/08/2022 14:28

@Dotjones not changing clothes every day

Unless you specifically mean underwear this is not essential. In fact I’d go as far as to say it was wasteful and not at all environmentally friendly. I wear the same clothes until they are actually dirty or smell, because, aside from any financial or environment concerns, why would I make more work for myself?

I agree but you and I are slattern by mumsnet standards 😂

BearGryllsDad · 25/08/2022 17:54

I am in the top 40 percent of earners. I have already told my children there won't be much in the way of Xmas presents this year.

RadioRouge · 25/08/2022 17:56

Thanks @ClaudineClare, Boris Johnson's attempt to characterise our energy bills quadrupling as some kind of war effort and to shame us for complaining is so transparently nonsense I have been surprised that anyone has fallen for it.

ItsSnowJokes · 25/08/2022 14:53

The government gives zero fucks that people will die or people will have miserable lives being freezing cold and not having enough food to eat. It doesn't affect them and theirs so why do they care? They didn't give a shit when thousands of people were drying from covid and they proclaimes let the bodies pile high etc.....

In the real world, I hate that we are living like the bloody victorian times. It should not be allowed to happen. And yet some cunts will still vote the tories back in........

To be fair, they introduced furlough for 18 months and various grants and loans.

BelleHathor · 25/08/2022 17:57

Charlize43 · 25/08/2022 15:53

I also can't help thinking about the Germany in the 1920s, the Weimar Republic, when inflation reached such ludicrous proportions that people were having to degrade and prostitute themselves just to survive, crime and chaos were rife... But it's not the 'Weimar' stage that frightens me, but what could come after it when we are all broken.

Clearly, the only people who will survive this are the wealthy, who see it as 'just a little price increase' and 'Oh, it's good for the planet for people (poor people) to consume less'.

It's already happening in Europe, Marie Le pen got 40% in the recent French elections. The far right party is currently leading in the Italian polls for the election next month. Bulgaria is on its 3rd government this year. If German industry crashes 25% of people could lose their jobs and Germany is the backbone of European economies. All it takes is a charming Farage sort to likely to win the next election .....

It is infuriating. The big April hike was also announced before the war started.

Our rent is increasing, my income is steadily being reduced because less people are going out for meals and tipping less (and yes of course nobody is obliged to tip but frankly I rely on tips to survive because minimum wage is not enough to live off), I feel sick at the thought of what is coming. I'm scared, I have had multiple panic attacks every day and they are only increasing, on my darkest days I have actually contemplated whether we'd be better off dead because everything is just so bleak. Some of us are either going to starve to death or freeze to death, some of us can't afford our prescriptions now let alone in a few months.

FlipFlops4Me · 25/08/2022 18:45

RadioRouge · 25/08/2022 17:14

I'm not looking forward to my children growing up like that!

Surely having gone through it you wouldn't want other children to suffer the same?

We didn't think of it as suffering. We just thought of it as winter. It was cold and life was difficult but we got through. I worry about my disabled husband so I have bought him new thermal undies, warm trousers and jumpers, and got him a fake oodie. I crocheted throws for each of us, and a big blanket for the bed. We'll cope - we both grew up poor and stayed poor for many a long year. It's not easy but it's not impossible and we still had (free) fun and laughed every day.

@KevinTheKoala I'm so sorry. Please hang in there. I would go and see your GP to ask for help for your panic attacks. Maybe contact a food bank if you need to. I know it feels bleak but it won't be like this forever. I remember a time in my life when I had to choose between tampax and an evening meal. It's a disgrace you're in such a frightening position, please reach out wherever you can for support.

gogohmm · 25/08/2022 19:06

I'm worried, not for us, we can save less, eat out less, stop buying HelloFresh ... but the people in the restaurants will loose their jobs, the workers at the meal box companies will loose their jobs, we will retire later meaning his well paid job won't be released until later ... and we'll do less basically, this affects others. We are giving our £400 to the food bank plus donating money monthly to them, setting up a weekly hot meal scheme for the community starting in October. I can't personally do more - we will continue to support local businesses as much as possible

I second this @KevinTheKoala .

I had to take propanalol for panic attacks a few years ago. It was only for a few months and I found them very easy to start and stop. Please don't suffer in silence with them.

I'm guessing child maintenance

We’ve just had a multi fuel burner installed. Watch the price of logs go through the ceiling now!

Obviously depending on where you are, you won't necessarily have to buy fuel. We have had a burner since 1997, have never, repeat never, paid for any fuel. Offcuts from skips, a chippie we know, foraged wood and cones from the countryside, other people's old fences, you name it. If you're able and prepared to put the time in and can either carry it home (DH does and he's in his 70s) or get a little cart, it's possible.

StillGoingStrongToday · 25/08/2022 19:22

RadioRouge · 25/08/2022 16:48

I guess you can do that when you control it @StillGoingStrongToday

I know which bills I'd rather be paying.

I bet that approach works out cheaper for the country too.

That’s fine. I’d rather the situation here where I pay a couple of thousand pounds more for my energy and about £50,000 less in income tax.

If I do change my kind though I’ll probably move back home there. That’s a decision for another year.

Despite the fact that most of us won't be able to afford food or heating - I can see other problem too - mental health issues. How long you can carry on if you need to count every single pence despite the fact you both working full time and have only 1 or 2 kids? This country still need cleaners, kitchen porters, etc - some people are on minimum wage and they won't become directors or managers. My son goes to music lessons for toddlers, once a week £7. It was 170 (!!!) kids on waiting list, yesterday teacher called us asking if we have any friends who would like to join that group - almost all cancelled....

Most people won’t be able to afford food or heating? Have you a source for that? It’s literally unbelievable.

StillGoingStrongToday · 25/08/2022 19:26

RadioRouge · 25/08/2022 17:01

If our government had spent the last decade investing in renewables to make us self sufficient in energy we wouldn't be paying through the nose for French electricity would we?

We can't blame the French for our own government's failings.

But they have. We’ve the largest offshore wind farms in the world which is one of the reasons our carbon footprint has dropped so much.

We could have had quite a lot of gas from fracking too if the morons on the left hadn’t got so upset about it.

Why would you need to cancel Christmas? Christmas is more than sky high piles of presents and too much food that goes to waste.

Hopefully this will bring an end to the ridiculous consumerism of Christmas. Of course there will be some poor people who never had much in the first place but the amount that some kids seem to get is crazy not to mention the ridiculous amounts of food and booze consumed.

theworldhas · 25/08/2022 19:38

Tories: trickle down economics, minimal government investment, and free market extremism WORKS so we’ll relentlessly implement that term after term. 3rd most unequal income in the developed world? That’s Good!

… living standards decline, public services fail, essential utilities provided by private companies totally unaffordable, housing increasingly out of reach of 30 somethings …

Tories: that’s just the way it is - stop blaming the government for everything! Look how poor people were in 1900!

treetopspot · 25/08/2022 19:38

I feel the same about Christmas. I think having a very small one sounds a good idea. My favourite ever one was 2020 when it was just DS and me (although I do understand not everyone felt the same)
