Don't understand fashion/ cosmetic trends

AIBU to think the big thick dark eyebrows and lip injections (that look like duck lips) just looks awful on everyone who has it? I don't understand why you would pay good money to look like that?
Also the trend of guys getting what looks like a poddle perm on top of their head - it just looks silly.
AIBU or am I just to old to understand why it looks good?

It was all silicone implants, shite crash diet sludge and nose jobs in the 90s and I'm pretty sure Botox isn't that new.

brob · 25/08/2022 14:21

I think the mullet is coming back though 😆

How wrong you are. It's already back!

All the trendy young boys look like extras from Neighbours circa 1988.

SizzlerFizzler · 25/08/2022 15:29

I think what's new about cosmetic enhancements these days is that they're cheap and freely available, whereas previously plastic surgery and tweakments were mainly the preserves of the wealthy. On the one had it sound more democratic but on the other hand there are lots of people who've gone on a half day course injecting filler into people's lips for £80. It also changes our perception of what a face looks like when half your social group have had something done.

Rapidtango · 25/08/2022 15:30

I think every generation have their fashion disasters. For me, the issue now is how easy it is for people to actually alter their bodies - for us, daft hairstyles, ridiculous make up, ok, but we weren't having fillers, Botox, tattooed eyebrows. It's the permanence and extent of some of the procedures that's concerning, and that some of the women having the procedures are so very young.

Sorry I misread you last time. You're well aware the mullet is back!

BeanieTeen · 25/08/2022 15:36

I think the poodle perm is definitely a very young thing - I see lots of teen boys around with hair like that but never anyone who looks over the age of 21.
Duck lips and overly thick lashes aren’t and haven’t ever been in fashion. Full lips, well sculpted eye brows definitely were - but a lot of women lose track of where to stop.

NancyPickford · 25/08/2022 16:08

I am old and was tutting at the local High School girls with their teeny tiny skirts. My friend, who was at school with me in the late 60s reminded me how I was sent home to change because my skirt was so short, from behind my blazer was actually longer and it looked like I had no skirt on. So I stopped tutting at the youth of today and reflected on my dear old mother's saying 'there's nothing new under the sun.'

I'm a millennial and we all rolled our skirts up too.

I shouldn't have, I don't have the legs for it.

It's a 'meet me at McDonald's' cut!

Looks awful but so did many trends when I was a teen (looks back at the awful ponchos from Tammy girl)

allfurcoatnoknickers · 25/08/2022 18:47

Duck lips and those massive thick eyebrows have been out of fashion for years. They were fleetingly in in about 2016. I work with students and it's all about the back to the 90s "Clean Girl" aesthetic.

Saying that thick eyebrows and duck lips are in fashion is a bit like saying that streaky pink blusher, blue eyeshadow and a perm are in fashion. Some people might still wear it, but it's not the look of the moment.

HoppingKangaroo · 25/08/2022 13:54

Cas112 so you think the duck lips and think dark eyebrows people draw on look good?

No, I said your old

Old and judgemental.

I love the memes going around of young women in either super short skirts or hip hugger jeans with halter tops and bare midriffs leaning against the car with the caption “This was you grandma at your age”.

Don't understand fashion/ cosmetic trends
Doingmybest12 · 26/08/2022 04:11

It is fashion.
We had 16th century lead face paint and the Alexandra limp. It is nothing new. It serves a purpose for humans.
You don't have to like it, luckily you can choose not to follow it.
I agree this particular fashion seems to have mostly gone ,from my experience recently on holiday in 2 different parts of the UK. The girls all looked quite natural but something else will come a long soon.

DeeCeeCherry · 26/08/2022 04:37

Fashion trends change all the time. Why does it matter? Every era has had elders moaning about youth fashion and not understanding it, no doubt. You dont have to understand it, just accept its not your generation. C'est la vie. You'll feel better if you actively stop looking and judging

MistyRock · 26/08/2022 04:59

Agreed, it does look silly. I'm really into my make up but what I like seems a million miles from today's fashion. What's with the yellow tone foundation for every skin colour? The thick and unblendable eyeshadows? The ghastly eyelashes? I must be so old and out of it. For me less is more. I either do really eye catching eyes, or a strong lipstick look. Do not get me started on the inches of foundation. 😂😂😂

NancyPickford · 26/08/2022 14:57

That's Pan's People leaning on the car.

TheDogsMother · 26/08/2022 15:20

I think eybrow/lip thing looks a bit ludicrous and a shame when so many of these young women are really attractive without it. But then it's their business, I'm old and I was also a slave to various mad trends over the years. Give it a few years and they will look back in horror like we do.

Now did someone say thin eyebrows were making a comeback ? I really hope so because I wrecked min with over plucking years ago !

MistyRock · 26/08/2022 15:41

Yes they are!

Stroopwaffle5000 · 26/08/2022 15:45

Slug eyebrows and lip filler are actually going out of fashion now. Eyebrows are still full but less drawn on and loads of "celebrities" are getting their lip filler dissolved.

Diamondwhiteandthe80s · 26/08/2022 15:50

the big awful lips are ridiculous. Saw a lady in a huge suv the other day. She looked like she was trying to suck the windscreen.

VerveClique · 26/08/2022 15:57

Fashion moves on because it thrives on the the difficulty of getting the exact look. Once things catch on they become more mainstream… I could book lip fillers at 10 local salons today if I wanted to. So fashion will inevitably move on from this.

JamesWilbyFanClub · 26/08/2022 16:12

Having a personal opinion on the aesthetics of fashion doesn't mean you're judgemental. We are allowed to dislike a certain look, find it unattractive and voice our opinion.
It doesn't mean we are placing any moral judgement on that person. It doesn't mean we think we look 'better'.

Yogagrandmum · 26/08/2022 16:16

And false eyelashes

Thatswhyimacat · 26/08/2022 16:20

As many have already said, duck lips and thick brows isn't trendy anymore and hasn't been for a while.

Current trend is soft fluffy brows, glowy skin, minimal makeup (balms, brown mascara etc), naturally styled hair etc. I actually think young person style at the moment is really good and will age a lot better than some eras, they all look very casual but cool.

Scianel · 26/08/2022 16:33
