Why are men so entitled?

Yes celebs might well be able to do it @ThickCutSteakChips though I'd argue that the Locke-Locke's circle isn't right as their friends haven't embarked on their own families which it's always encouraged to do first, to ensure there aren't issues with letting the baby go to the intended parents.

Such as what type of issues?

Minster2012 · 24/08/2022 22:01

@gnilliwdog well said. And if they are done with having their own families why not help
Others

gnilliwdog · 24/08/2022 22:02

Because feminists are against the exploitation of female bodies. Paying women, usually women who do it because they need money, to rent their bodies as an incubator, comes under 'exploitation'.

You could as well argue for better rights for surrogate mothers, to raise the fees so it's really life changing, to put in place rigorous counselling before the women commit to it. I don't know if I can really respect the judgement of people who think killing full term foetuses for any reason is OK anyway. I don't agree with surrogacy as it stands, but if women want to do it I think it is as justifiable as the current feminist take on abortion.

Terfydactyl · 24/08/2022 22:02

gnilliwdog · 24/08/2022 21:40

No, but I explicitly stated when a woman agrees to surrogacy with no exploitation.

I seriously doubt that any surrogacy happens with no exploitation at all.
Even if it's a sister doing it for a sibling. Of everything I've ever read on surrogacy even close family ones, some go terribly wrong and entire families are effected.
But often, too often , you can see who came up with the idea first, and who pushed for it and that's coercion. It's not necessarily about money.
To be fair I've not read tomes on surrogacy, but enough to know its not a great idea.
However, even if it's all made completely illegal, it will still happen.

gnilliwdog · 24/08/2022 22:04

@Thejoyfulstar Thank you. Glad I am not the only one to spot the inconsistencies.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 24/08/2022 22:04

Attached is a photo of Mark's pal Rosanna arriving at Dublin Airport with her surrogate, keeping in mind the surrogate and her family spent 6 weeks in a bunker before escaping.

Rosanna isn't one to miss a photo opportunity.

The surrogate is in the middle, the little child looks terrified.

People praised Rosanna on the photo.

Minster2012 · 24/08/2022 22:06

@Whowhatwherewhenwhynow emotionally deal with it themselves if they haven't reached a point of knowing for sure their own family is complete

Extensive Counselling is a mandatory part of surrogacy law in the uk

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 24/08/2022 22:08

“what if the medical condition is that the woman is born without a womb? Requires no treatment but makes carrying a child impossible. She could have eggs but not carry so be the genetic mother & her husband be the genetic father. Or fertility screwed by former treatment for a condition like cancer.”

I’d be all for funding any medical treatment to support someone reproduce themselves. However, as sad as infertility is, it does not justify unethical practices, especially those that are harmful to infants.

Nat6999 · 24/08/2022 22:10

Whathechicken yes adopted children do now but look at how many adoptive children of the 1950's - 1970's were from unmarried mother's homes, they never got any contact from their birth parents until the law changed when they could start looking age 18. A surrogate child can have one of their biological parents in their life from birth. What is different about surrogacy to adoption? The child is a very much wanted child & will be loved.

Louise Thompson has already had a baby, maybe she would be willing to do it for him?

Oh no, wait, actually she probably wouldn't be that keen given that she almost died during childbirth. Probably neither would any of their other female friends after seeing what Louise and her family went through.

So maybe you are right, Ollie Lockes circle probably isn't right.

DoAllMyOwnStunts · 24/08/2022 22:12

Grateful to the pp who highlights that it is just people trafficking. I agree and will remember this for future debates.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 24/08/2022 22:12

@Nat6999 There is a huge difference.
If your DS wasn't in a same sex relationship and interested in having a family you'd probably see it differently.

newnamethanks · 24/08/2022 22:13

Slavery was abolished. It is illegal to buy a human being. Why do we allow babies to be traded in this way?

Clymene · 24/08/2022 22:13

We are not talking about late term abortion. We are talking about women being paid to have fertility treatment to sell her baby.

If you want to talk about the tiny number of women who have traumatic late term abortions because their foetus has a condition incompatible with life, maybe you can start another thread.

I can tell you something for nothing though - men like Mark wouldn't be punching the air if their child was severely disabled.

Minster2012 · 24/08/2022 22:14

So it's just the "not being able to carry a child" you find terrible @Whowhatwherewhenwhynow
So surely in that case the "medical treatment" they require funding help with is for someone to carry their child.

So if it were my eggs, my husbands sperm but I couldn't carry a child for afore mentioned potential reasons then you are all for that. That IS reproducing yourself.

chillipenguin · 24/08/2022 22:16

Is "Birth Mother" offensive? Apologies if it is. It feels a bit better in my mind than "gestational surrogate".

Minster2012 · 24/08/2022 22:16

Of course someone who had a traumatic labour wouldn't offer to be a surrogate @ThickCutSteakChips but "potential things that can happen in childbirth" are very much considered & covered

Ireland seems to have gone straight from directly abusing women under the guise of ‘religion’, to indirectly abusing women under the guise of ‘progressiveness’. With no respite in between.

He is a celebrity who travelled to America to use a surrogate just like anyone from the U.K. could.
There are people (a relatively small group of people) in Ireland who are campaigning to have laws around surrogacy changed but this won’t necessarily happen.
It would involve changes to the constitution which would be a serious and complex matter.
This is not something the general public in Ireland necessarily wants.
Shane from Westlife doesn’t represent Irish people on this issue.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 24/08/2022 22:19

@gnilliwdog I don't agree with full term abortion without a medical reason or surrogacy if that helps.

what are you on about? Of course it’s extremely sad if someone wants to carry a child but cannot and I’d support any funding to help resolve that issue.

If you provided the egg and your husband the sperm them of course the child would be biologically yours. However without another human carrying that baby for you you wouldn’t be able to produce a baby yourself. That is of course very sad, but no one has a right to the use of another body.

Yes, pregnancy and childbirth is a risky old business isn't it? And yet men like Mark Fehilly want to make sourcing a surrogate easier, want to make more women risk their lives if the price is right to give men what they want.

Women risking their health for the desires of others. And this is progress?

gnilliwdog · 24/08/2022 22:24

'We are not talking about late term abortion. We are talking about women being paid to have fertility treatment to sell her baby.'

I am pointing out the inconsistencies in many feminist arguments about a woman's right to choose.

'If you want to talk about the tiny number of women who have traumatic late term abortions because their foetus has a condition incompatible with life, maybe you can start another thread.'

No, I want to talk about feminists who want abortions available up to full term for any reason. And, that if it's OK to kill a full term foetus because you don't want it, it should be OK to give birth to one to sell to someone who does. Do it for money, do it for altruism, what the woman needs or wants always comes first, feminists tell me. If you believe all this you should be arguing for more money, more rights, more support for these women, not taking away their rights to choose.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 24/08/2022 22:25

@Minster2012 are you suggesting people have surrogates on theNHS? How would that work? If anyone who can’t carry a baby is entitled to one how are you access all the women to carry those babies?

EmeraldShamrock1 · 24/08/2022 22:28

@gnilliwdog Fgs create a thread and point out the inconsistencies there. 👋

Oh for fucks sake. Just engage your brain for a second and imagine a scenario where a woman has reached actual full term and then has an abortion? Would this be for shits and giggles? Because she decided actually she can't be arsed to have a baby any more? Or would it be because there are severe issues, physical or mental, and trauma at play and its an all round horrific unimaginable circumstance?

'Feminists tell me'..... you sound very ignorant and naive.
