AIBU to think that the Nutella ad that states that Nutella on toast is a nutritious way to start the day is a bit far fetched ? It also says that Nutella releases energy slowly making it an ideal breakfast. How can the stuff that Ferero Rochers are filled with be nutritious ? It's pure sugar and fat!!!

I understand 'hagelslag' even less. So messy, but kids love it.

Honey is actually very healthy - it's been proven to be more effective then cough syrup for a cough.

Brazilianmum · 22/01/2008 11:08

I think the marshmallow stuff is in the bakery section. It's particularly yummy with icecream.

nappyaddict · 22/01/2008 11:41

do asda/tesco sell it?

hippipotami · 22/01/2008 11:50

belgo - hagelslag is fab!!! In fact, it is the one thing I really miss from home...

seeker · 22/01/2008 11:54

Hoey is good for coughs - but it is no healthier as food than any other sugar. Bees have obviously hired the best marketting company in the world!

belgo · 22/01/2008 12:15

well obviously it is healthier then other sugars if it is good for coughs.

Buckets · 22/01/2008 12:51

Marshmallow fluff is usually near the nutella. You can also get it ready-swirled with peanut butter for a fluffernutter sandwich.
And isn't toast carcinogenic anyway?

soopermum1 · 22/01/2008 12:54

i'm with sallystrawberry on this. am a chocoholic, as is DH and DS, so it's not a matter of it being nutritious or not, but that i'd be sneaking spoons of it in the kitchen, DS would refuse to eat anything else, knowing it's in the cupboard (and is now smart enough to drag a chair along to the cupboard and check out the contents for himself), then DH would moan coz we'd eaten it all.

a big sliipery slope for

would rather have black coffee and a fag

Belgianchocolates · 22/01/2008 13:14

Actually I get our au pairs, who generally come from holland, to bring hagelslag with them when they come. I then hide it from the dcs as I do not want the dcs to learn how nice it is, otherwise I'd have to share it.
Apparently honey is a medium GI food, while sugar itself is a high GI food, so it IS better than sugar.

wantslotsofbabies · 22/01/2008 13:18

I can't get the little buggers to eat anything in the morning, no matter if it is healthy or not.

seeker · 22/01/2008 13:18

(Baffled emoticon) in Belgo's direction

Just because it's good for soothing a cough doesn't mean it's any healthier nutritionally. As I said - bees have a fab marketting department!

seeker · 22/01/2008 13:21

My dd had a pancake with chocolate spread (I know I said I don't have it in the house, but I was shopping yesterday evening and remembered this thread and decided my children were deprived) and an entire punnet of blueberries. I am absolutely sure that the blueberries cancelled out the chocolate spread.

I also believe that wine counts as one of your 5 a day because it's made out of grapes.

cherryredretrochick · 22/01/2008 13:48

Ok I know it is wrong but every time I start up Mumsnet I think mmmmmmm Nutella, I remember one occasion in my student days when I sat in a corner with a jar and no spoon. mmmmmmmmmmmmm, too good for the kids, also my are dairy free so all the more for me. Also re the honey argument isn't a large part of nutrion calories, honey has plenty of those as well as some vitamins etc I would imagine, so is definatley better than honey.

FillyjonkisCALM · 22/01/2008 16:35

at all this thread

I THINK I remember reading that, actually, SUGAR is good for coughs. It doesn't vastly matter WHICH sugar, unless you count the power of a placebo

I don't think that something being good for a cough is necessarily indicative of its nutritional status...

belgo · 22/01/2008 16:42

A quick google and I've come acros this about honey :here

'It also contains 35 % grape sugar, 17 % water, 2 % sucrose and small amounts of minerals and amino acids. Besides this, honey contains nearly all of the trace elements that the human body needs.'
and
'It?s a gentle laxative for youngsters. It?s an excellent form of quick energy. It contains amino acids that help build up calcium in the body. It is mildly sedative and encourages sleep.'

Habbibu · 22/01/2008 16:42

I can't get my head round Nutella on toast. French bread? A spoon? A finger? All yes. But toast? Blee.

belgo · 22/01/2008 16:43

As it happens, I can't stand the taste of honey

belgo · 22/01/2008 16:44

and I would rather my children ate honey rather then golden syrup for example.

belgo · 22/01/2008 16:44

nutella on toast isn't too bad. It kind of melts a little.

Habbibu · 22/01/2008 16:45

Don't know what it is - just the crunchy toast and Nutella. eeww

FillyjonkisCALM · 22/01/2008 16:47

pmsl at the honey promoters

It is basically sugar.

And it tastes revolting

belgo · 22/01/2008 16:48

'And it tastes revolting'

have to agree with you there Filly (glad you're back btw!)

belgo · 22/01/2008 16:49

I personally think very few foods are actually bad - it's the amount you eat of them that can cause the problem.

Viggoswife · 22/01/2008 16:52

Nutella eaten straight out of the jar with a spoon is the only way for me I am afraid. It is one of my trigger foods.

However I would probably not give it to my children for breakfast.

mousemole · 22/01/2008 18:43

yes, if you have it much better straight out the jar or on french bread. Melting on toast doesn't seem right.
