AIBU to think that the Nutella ad that states that Nutella on toast is a nutritious way to start the day is a bit far fetched ? It also says that Nutella releases energy slowly making it an ideal breakfast. How can the stuff that Ferero Rochers are filled with be nutritious ? It's pure sugar and fat!!!

LOL at bee sick.

Honey is jus sugar, though. Sugar is sugar, spat out by a bee or not!

I think that Nutella has been vigorously defended because so many MN-ers seem to enjoy it. I think people have resisted calls for the ad to be removed etc, rather than adopted, wholesale, the idea that Nutella is the New Broccoli.

iMum · 21/01/2008 18:20

so what we are saying then that really the only healthy thing to have on toast is what? marmite? philly?

iMum · 21/01/2008 18:21

next we'll see an add for that wierd fluff marshmallow in a jar stuff

Blu · 21/01/2008 18:22

yes, honey from bee mouths, eggs from a chicken's arse, milk from cow nipples, sausages from sheep's rectum - and Nutella from Tesco!

OverMyDeadBody · 21/01/2008 18:25

Wow. Whatever nutella spent to advertise on mumsnet it was money well spent!

sparklesandwine · 21/01/2008 18:25

imum - can you really get marshmallow in a jar?

i love marshmallows

seeker · 21/01/2008 18:25

Marmite is practically all salt!

There's no such thing as unhealthy food - only unhealthy quantities. A bit of fat and sugar won't do a child any harm - whether it takes the form of nutella on toast or butter and honey on toast.

But as I said - I ban Nutella for aesthetic and snobbish reasons. Ditto that marshmallow stuff. But we did have some of that on holiday in the States - bizarre it was!

mmmm.

FWIW, i buy marshmallow fluff in a jar regularly and make stuff with it - rice krispie treats, fudge, etc.

and the jar's label does read that it's 'part of a balanced breakfast'.

sure, if you balance it on the other side with some leftover Chinese takeaway and a beer.

sparklesandwine · 21/01/2008 18:30

expat - what is this marshmallow stuff? and why do i not know about it!!!

expatinscotland · 21/01/2008 18:31

it's just melted marshmallows in a jar. you spoon it out to use it.

iMum · 21/01/2008 18:38

fluff stuff here

sparklesandwine · 21/01/2008 18:41

Hmmmmmm i think i might have a look out for that thanks!

geordiemacminx · 21/01/2008 18:51

Probably not but its yummy........

belgo · 21/01/2008 19:03

nutella is very popular in Belgium. My dh eats it with cheese in sandwiches - and belgians are supposed to have a reputation for good food

I've heard of a paediatrician here recommending it to my friend to give to her one year old dd.

I personally don't have a problem with my kids eating it occasionally - butter and jam is probably worse.

I don't like it very much myself.

iMum · 21/01/2008 19:05

Its better than some stuff tho, I remember as a kid my mum buying this choccie spread that was really dark and gooey runny, very odd indeed.

mousemole · 21/01/2008 19:29

I didnt realise there had been so much Nutella talk before ! Its probably much better than lots of things and much better than nothing I suppose. Its just the ad was so child focused it got to me. Anyway, lets stop talking about it now. Enough PR for Nutella !

Excellent on toast for hangovers too.

3andnomore · 21/01/2008 21:07

Oh this is such a funny thread....hm...I am sure that honey is better just bee sick sugar...but there you go...actually I don't really like honey much myself, lol...well, I could not eat it on Toast or in sandwiches (but lovely in a dressing or a glaze for Gammon
Marmite...now that is freaky stuff, I mean they actually advice it for weaning...it must have more salt in a teeny knifetip then I don't know a big chinese take away ....and yeast...not sure how good that is all the time...(but then, you can buy yeast capsules that are meant to improve skin and stuff...but is that actually true?)
Marmelade and Jam, is also just sugar...the fruit is, I would imagine, destroyed in the process and the amount of sugar added...nah...anyway, unless in a Donought or part of my favourite homemade cookies I dislike jam with a vengeance...was made to eat it as a Kid at Holiday "Boot" camp....

Cheese and Nutella...now there is a sickening thought....

as for that marshmellow stuff...I wonder if it tastes similar to "Negerkuss" which is similarish to Marshmallow tea cakes...but a thin waffle base and a thinner chocckie coat.....if so, I probably would like it on Crusty roll...cause I am a sucker for crusty roll with Negerkuss (and I better not translate that first part before the Kuss (Kiss) as very un pc

nooka · 21/01/2008 21:18

My dd has Nutella on toast every morning! She also has a fried egg. Lovely! Neither of my children are very keen on breakfast though, so I'm happy to find any fuel, and the Nutella gets the egg and toast into her, so I'm happy. She eats lots of fruit and veg at other meals, but chocolate is her number one request at all times.

FillyjonkisCALM · 22/01/2008 09:05

honey is vile

and it is just sugar

I don't think you you'd get far with a campaign along the lines of "honey-a nutritious start to the day" .

Though I suppose it isn't loaded with fat...

Blu · 22/01/2008 09:38

iMum - was that choc spread in a shallow plastic tub?
We used to have that once in a blue moon, if we pitched our pestering just right.

jumpingbeans · 22/01/2008 09:45

expat, you been looking in my window at breccie time?

Belgianchocolates · 22/01/2008 09:57

I grew up with chocolate spread or honey sandwiches in the morning. So I can't see the problem with them. It's not much different from jam to me. I remember seeing plenty of disgusted faces when I told people here that I ate that and I still don't understand: everyone loves chocolate, so why not put it on bread. Now my children are growing up on the same breakfast.
Oh and by the way if you think nutella is bad, than I just need to warn you that there's even worse to come from Europe you know. Something we call 'hagelslag' wich are basically chocolate sprinkels that we have on our sandwich in the morning, usually with butter, but I have them with honey .

nappyaddict · 22/01/2008 10:21

what aisle will i find marshmallow fluff in then?
