Mouse on patio this morning

Zooeyzo · 23/08/2022 13:09

Spotted a mouse this morning on my patio so I banged on the window it ran off and then came back after a couple of minutes.
This went on around 5 times and I was quite surprised firstly that its daytime and second that it's an annoying little bastard mouse who won't go away.
First time I've seen one. No food or anything on patio of interest. It's also paving not a wooden one where they might live under. It's also very clear so I spotted it straight away.
I've kept the back door open all day over spring and summer.

How do people keep pests away from the house.

Ignore @Woopzies comment - poison is despicable, quite likely to be picked up by a non target species and is inherently cruel. Internall bleeding, raging thirst and slow death anyone?
If it is a woodmouse or fieldmouse species it is unlikely to come into your house and, even if it does, is unlikely to do any harm. Unlike house mice, an entirely different species, they are not carriers of zoonotic diseases.

My garden is full of them - along with voles, shrews and many other small mammals - all welcome, it is their home too

Thirstquenching · 23/08/2022 13:46

So whats all the drama about then? Its a mouse in its natural habitat and you're saying there is no access points in your house and you aren't putting traps down......kinda a pointless post then!

Zooeyzo · 23/08/2022 13:48

@Thirstquenching I normally leave the door open so I'm now concerned they might come in. But seems from other posts they normally stay outside.

Zooeyzo · 23/08/2022 13:49

@Hedgesfullofbirds how do you tell the difference between the types?

queenMab99 · 23/08/2022 13:53

Quick! Shut the door and lock it!

MissMaple82 · 23/08/2022 13:55

How strange of a human being you are!

’mouse spotted outside in its natural environment’ shocker

My thoughts exactly 🙄

ManateeFair · 23/08/2022 13:45

I think in this scenario the horrible thing is the cat, really

Cats are gonna cat.

They're hunters. It's what they do.

IsleofDen · 23/08/2022 14:01

Next door fed all their animals outside, so we often had mice in the garden, they never tried to get into the house. A Blackbird hopped into the kitchen once, calmly ate the worm he was holding, and then flew back out. I was gobsmacked 😂

Last week a frog hopped in, sadly the cat saw this one and despite my best efforts she was better at frog catching than me 😢

Deguster · 23/08/2022 14:06

@ManateeFair nope, cat does cat things non-shocker. Mice and rats have no bladder and leave a trail of piss everywhere. The only way to be sure there are no disease-spreading piss trails in my very rural house is my brace of feisty cats.

if you want to live in a stinky rodent-ridden hovel, knock yourself out.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 23/08/2022 14:13

Here is my mouse deterrent. As you can see, he's vicious and poised for the kill 😂

It can easily be living under the patio. When my backing neighbours pulled theirs up it exposed at network of rat runs . If you put food out for birds (or neighbours do) it's probably eating that. If its not in the house I'd leave it though in winter its more likely to find a way in (eg loft space)

mountainsunsets · 23/08/2022 14:18

@MistyGreenAndBlue what a gorgeous void!

Black cats are the best. We have three!

Woopzies · 23/08/2022 13:35

Confused at the replies since obviously if it's on the patio the next stage is finding a hole to get into the house...

OP, I'd lay down some traps + poison around the exterior of the house, potentially some near openings and 'outside type' areas (e.g., pantry garden room etc etc) and you shouldn't have any issues.

God it's vile that's the first thing you think of

GuyFawkesDay · 23/08/2022 14:19

Got news for you, they've been there all the time, you just didn't see them

If it's outside, what's the problem?

ArticSaviour · 23/08/2022 14:20

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 23/08/2022 13:23

I can't believe you saw a mouse outside!!!

I was expecting it to be there on the stair

IcedOatLatte · 23/08/2022 14:24

ManateeFair · 23/08/2022 13:44

Most mice live outdoors and have zero interest in getting into your house, so I really wouldn’t give this a second thought.

Most might do but loads of mice go into houses, it's valid to consider how to stop that if you don't want mice on your house surely

I don't understand your point

Don’t put poison down. If another animal catches the mouse (which they likely will as the mouse will be in a weakened state) then they too are poisoned if they eat whole/part of it.

Actually the first thing I thought of was the diseases spread by such vermin and how much from a hygiene perspective it is definitely not preferable to have them in the house.

I actually find it vile that people are happy to risk mice getting into their homes.

Phrenologistsfinger · 23/08/2022 14:28

We have a garden mouse (field mouse species) and it is very sweet, lives in hedge next to patio. It hoovers up bird table seed spilt by birds. I haven’t seen it for a while and I think our visiting badger may have had it.

Any poison given to a mouse might also poison badgers, people’s cats, birds of prey, owls, other wildlife etc. Hedgehogs might also eat mouse bait.

Phrenologistsfinger · 23/08/2022 14:34

@Woopzies humans carry far more diseases that could harm me and mine, but they still come into my house.

Noone wants to share with a mouse, but you don’t need to nuke them, humane traps and deterrents work just fine.

The field mice were there before the houses. We have invaded THEIR territory. It’s really sad how humans are unable to see that we must live side by side with our wildlife, which are all part of biodiversity and the food chain.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 23/08/2022 14:40

It was checking out it's new residence.. Now has gone to hire a coach for all the family....

Hedgesfullofbirds · 23/08/2022 15:26

@Zooeyzo, they are not easy to tell apart unless you have one of each species side by side, for comparison, but, generally, wood mice and yellow necked mice are fractionally larger, more rounded snouts, slightly lighter in colour, larger ears and big eyes. House mice are actually native to India, but arrived here with early explorers and have adapted. They also largely live outside, but are more likely to enter human habitation than other mouse species.
It is only the males which leave urine trails and it is not constant - it is done to scent mark territory and leave a pheromone trail to attract females.
Please avoid using poisons - secondary poisoning of non target species is a real risk, there is a reason why poisons should only be used by those who have had training in the ckrrect use of second generation anti coagulant rodenticides and I believe I am right in saying that only trained, professional users are permitted to use rodenticides in an outdoor environment, for tjis very reason.
Incidentally, I have a woodmouse in my house which appears in the living room every evening for a daily snack of biscuit crumbs! I don't mind sharing my living space with other living creatures.

CalistoNoSolo · 23/08/2022 15:33

This is like the indorex spider thread. Kill the fucking mouse using any means necessary, if there is collateral to other wildlife so much the better.

What the fuck is wrong with people that they are so indifferent to the welfare of other species living around them? Poisoning is a despicable way to kill something and I would rather kill the cats than any of the small creatures they predate on. I fucking hate people.

AlternativelyWired · 23/08/2022 15:59

Did it have clogs on?
