Bearing in mind that the price of pretty much everything is shooting up, things like a favourite chocolate bar or coffee from the shops as a treat, or a relaxing soak in the bath with some fancy bubble might be out of reach for many soon.

What are some free/cheap things to look forward to?
How are people building up resilience to what will come especially by winter?

I really hope this doesn’t come across as insensitive, but…In all honesty, I feel like so many people I know (myself included) haven’t had to overthink budgets and spending. Not that we live a lavish lifestyle, far from it. But we are comfortable enough to not worry about being able to afford to pay the bills. (Perhaps it is a generational thing… as we haven’t had to struggle to afford things like previous generations.) Now, so many things are changing, we will have to adapt but I'm worried that I won’t be able to enjoy even simple pleasures.

D&d. Zeitgeisty I know but I've been playing it since long before stranger things. I have a group I run and another group I play in and whilst you certainly can spend money if you want to there is very little you actually have to buy.

Its online so I don't even have to pay a babysitter. Two nights a week I tuck the kids in, come downstairs and retreat to a different world.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I get the Apple strudel thing but I've yet to find one without bloody raisins! Any suggestions?! Grin

@courgettigreensadwater have you ever tried making apple strudel yourself? It's surprisingly easy and tastes delicious

Fruit & veg out of my garden. Free but also an achievement. Especially fresh figs. And this year I've managed to grow two peaches (yes, I know, but it's a young tree).😊

Meeting a friend for a walk

Buying books from charity shops

Cooking food for the freezer eg various curries, knowing that takes care of some Friday night dinners

  • seeing close friends and family. Having dinner together at home.
  • planning. Future decorating, studying, house move whatever.
  • cooking and not shopping until the fridge is nearly bare. I love using up the last bits ahead of a new shop.
  • litter picking. Hunting for shells in the sand.
FallopianTubeTrain · 22/08/2022 19:03

My friend, her husband and I used to do ready steady cook evenings where I go over to theirs and we'd pick starter, main dessert out of a hat and have to make a dish with just what they had in the cupboards. They were always really fun evenings.

I swap books with friends

DH and I try and find new routes for our lunchtime walks (we both wfh)

DD and I like to do yoga with Adrienne on you tube

Greek style iced coffee. Just instant coffee, whizzed until frothy with a small amount of cold water and sugar if you like it, poured over ice, add more cold water and/or cold milk and drink with a straw.
