Bearing in mind that the price of pretty much everything is shooting up, things like a favourite chocolate bar or coffee from the shops as a treat, or a relaxing soak in the bath with some fancy bubble might be out of reach for many soon.

What are some free/cheap things to look forward to?
How are people building up resilience to what will come especially by winter?

I really hope this doesn’t come across as insensitive, but…In all honesty, I feel like so many people I know (myself included) haven’t had to overthink budgets and spending. Not that we live a lavish lifestyle, far from it. But we are comfortable enough to not worry about being able to afford to pay the bills. (Perhaps it is a generational thing… as we haven’t had to struggle to afford things like previous generations.) Now, so many things are changing, we will have to adapt but I'm worried that I won’t be able to enjoy even simple pleasures.

A frozen apple strudel - about £1.50 from big supermarkets - and a tin of custard (£1 max).

Walking or swimming outside

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/08/2022 17:32

A trip to the library

courgettigreensadwater · 22/08/2022 17:34

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I get the Apple strudel thing but I've yet to find one without bloody raisins! Any suggestions?! Grin

Dalaidramailama · 22/08/2022 17:35

Anewdayanewdawn · 22/08/2022 17:38

Sea swimming and using the local library!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 22/08/2022 17:39

Mooching round a car boot sale in nice weather and finding lots of bargains.

Brigante9 · 22/08/2022 17:46

Walking round local woods with the youngsters, I haven’t been there for ages because we had a very reactive dog up til last year.

Clearing out the attic, which has actually produced money from some hidden gems being sold. We haven’t seen some stuff in 20 years!

Pbbananabagel · 22/08/2022 17:46

The quick crossword in the metro. I can usually do most of them so it makes me feel smart!

jay55 · 22/08/2022 17:46

A mocha out the (free) machine at work.

That would be blasphemy 😁

Small pleasures is browsing food shops with foreign food (asian, ee, me, etc) and finding quite cheap tasty stuff. Big fan if pickled veg like turnip.

Helpmethinkofasolution · 22/08/2022 17:52

Recently it's been transforming things out of the 10p trolley at my local shop. Made some amazing tasting 'pizza' by using finger rolls, tomato purée, reduced tomato's and Aldi mozzarella. Just as nice as dominos.
Also making sushi with my daughter and treating ourselves to whatever global cuisine it is in Lidl that week.
Last week we went on a cheap holiday and the best day I had was spent on the shore of a Loch with Pom bears, cava we won in a raffle and some sweaty cheese sandwiches.
With small children, eating out is never as good as expected so I don't miss that. I hope things don't get so bad we can't afford the odd day trip or camping holiday. If it comes to it, I'd rather downsize and have a better quality of life.

Going for an evening run

MyFragility · 22/08/2022 17:59

Meeting up with a very good friend in your lounge over a cuppa/wine/whatever

Watching a movie with friends or family or DH

Having a look at Google maps for nearby green areas and then going for a walk there

Watching sunsets from different local areas

MyFragility · 22/08/2022 18:00

Yoga with Adrianne (Youtube)

GiantCheeseMonster · 22/08/2022 18:04

BorrowBox app for free audiobooks and ebooks - I cancelled my Audible subscription last year when I found this.

I’m a massive saddo - I love sticking an “ambience” on YouTube and sitting with a coffee with it on in the background. I recently discovered it when searching for autumnal things ! Cosy book/coffee shop vibes with relaxing jazz, bliss!

I love this! I love the fireplace and rain ones. This, a good book, and a warm drink makes my night.

Great thanks when's he available? 😃

Treabrea · 22/08/2022 18:14

Rummaging through charity shops

Having a biscuit with my cup of tea (preferably a chocolate digestive)

Lighting a candle in the evening

Once a week I try and do a quick "facial" or a pedicure. Takes about 30 minutes and I usually end up folding laundry with a face mask on but I still enjoy it.

Crossword or sudoko from the free newspaper

LadyCatStark · 22/08/2022 18:20

OMG I’d forgotten about apple strudel!

Reebokclassics · 22/08/2022 18:21

neverwakeasleepingbaby · 22/08/2022 16:43

Yeah true but it's not very very expensive. It's £9 from Bicester village (obviously lots of caveats about £9 being a lot/not a lot of money to some people)

£9 for shower gel 😂😂😂 I think you’re on the wrong thread!

TreacheryPepper · 22/08/2022 18:22

Sex

TheUndoing · 22/08/2022 18:27

Curling up under a blanket with a good book - either after a trip to the library or using my library’s free app.

Bracing autumn walk round the lake or going for a nice run.

Watching a good BBC drama.

Watching YouTube videos.

bimbimbap · 22/08/2022 18:27

courgettigreensadwater I think Asda apple strudel is raisin-free😊

I am always happy when we manage to eat dinner early so I can watch a bit of tv/play with the DC rather than doing dinner-bath-bed in a rush.

Blackberry picking and making a crumble
