To ask if you have had 12 points on your license and if so what happened?

I have 9 points currently, I have had a letter to say I was speeding 53 mph on a 40mph motorway temporary speed limit

Once I reach 12 points I've read it's an auto ban - unless you can prove hardship.

Has anyone got to 12 points and either successfully appealed it or got away with it and if so how?

No smart comments please these is really stressing me out

Thanks in advance

What were the other points for? Driving on the phone? Driving 33 mph in a 30 zone? Driving 60 mph in a 30 zone? And how long before points drop off a licence, as in in what time frame have you incurred these points?

I'm basically fucked

I don’t think you are. Worse case scenario is a six month ban. But contrary to most comments here everyone I know who can prove that they need to drive for work has stayed on the roads.

SisterAgatha · 22/08/2022 20:32

I am another one who thinks you shouldn’t try and escape the fair outcome with some made up excuses. Take the ban.

It really stresses me out when I see people speeding...

Having 9 points clearly hasn't changed your behaviour, but maybe a ban will. It will only be temporary and driving less is better for the environment. Maybe get an e bike or go on lift sharing sites if you need to commute.

Barkingdog2022 · 22/08/2022 20:33

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe appreciate that and I was coming from a a place of being vague so not location more ‘an admin worker all points received within 2 years’ but you’re spot on. Some people are not looking to help, even if that’s helping the OP not see the van as life changing and maybe there is ways around not driving and lifestyle changes.

housemaus · 22/08/2022 20:35

Unless you've got a very, very good reason then you're likely to get a ban.

And even the very good reasons aren't a guarantee. But the ban is there so you learn a lesson... learn it, then you won't get banned again.

You should lose your license. You clearly didn"t learn when you previously got 9 points.

URaflutteringcunt · 22/08/2022 20:37

Some people are not looking to help

But they are looking to help. Help the roads be safer for all of us, not just to help OP find a get out plan.

Asdf12345 · 22/08/2022 20:37

A friend avoided a ban at 18 points, twelve were scored on the same camera on the same day over two return journeys where they missed a change of speed limit.

They argued that they needed the car to work (they undoubtedly did) and they couldn’t pay the bills on the partners earning potential if they got a job.

All in they reckoned it cost close to £10k that year in legal fees, fines, and increased insurance. The insurance was a couple of grand extra for a few years afterwards.

SarahProblem · 22/08/2022 20:38

Drive safer. You should lose your license. Hopefully you learn something.

You shouldn't be on the roads. I hope you are banned. Getting 12 points is disgraceful and irresponsible.

Quite. I can’t believe people are willing to give tips on how to get out of it. I don’t want people that speed on the roads as I want them to be safe. My relative was killed by someone speeding, they had 9 points on their licence at the time. Stop speeding before you kill or injure someone.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 22/08/2022 19:59

My advice and this isn’t a smart comment, this is a genuine look at yourself comment - behave. The rest will work itself out and you won’t be having to ask stupid questions like how can I find a way to avoid the repercussions of my actions.

This. If it was easy to get out of this it wouldn’t be much of a deterrent would it?

SummerNightsDriftingAway · 22/08/2022 20:42

You must, without doubt, be consistently speeding when you drive to have that many points. Speeding, as others have clearly outlined with examples above, not a victimless crime. You are putting people at much higher risk of injury and death each time you drive at a higher speed than you should be.

Why should you be helped? What makes you so special that it's ok for you to drive dangerously (which you are by default doing if you drive at speed)?

I'm gobsmacked but this thread. You absolutely deserve a ban and any 'smart' comments you get on here. If you didn't want a ban, you shouldn't have sped consistently. Rather simple, huh?

MomwasCasual · 22/08/2022 20:43

The reason why pleading hardship because you drive for work/ need to drive to get to work/ need to provide transport for dependents etc often doesn't succeed is because they are all reasons why it should have been more important for you to drive within the speed limits, not less.

Gnr24 · 22/08/2022 20:44

Hopefully you'll get the ban , as obviously you haven't learnt anything from having 9 points. There are too many idiots on the road .

Shame on people trying to give tips to help a reckless driver stay on the roads!

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 20:45

@Anothernamechangeplease I hope your relative recovers well.

What are the other six points for?

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 20:51

It would be an easy mistake to make once but you have 12 points coming.

That suggests inattention at best.

SoldierBoy · 22/08/2022 20:52

Fucking hell this thread is awful. I was recently hit and badly injured a speeding driver who had 12 points and had managed to use exceptional hardship to keep his licence. He clearly didn’t learn his lesson and now my life will never be the same again. There is no justification for speeding at all, let alone so many times that you end up with that many points

Gnr24 · 22/08/2022 20:52

And yet you've managed to do it again !!!

You sound completely irresponsible, just accept you've made too many mistakes and now you need to face the consequences.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 22/08/2022 20:54

I hope the ban comes as delightfully wrapped as you do OP, you break the law with such flair and daring. Not a single introspective thought, it’s so very charming in a tailgater with full beam and anger issues.

The time off from the motorway will help you calm the fuck down.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 20:55

@SoldierBoy I'm sorry that happened to you.

LuckySnips · 22/08/2022 20:58

I'm not at all sympathetic to speeding, but I'm curious about the temp speed limits on motorways. I see them almost every time I go on the m5 and no-one sticks to them if there's no busy traffic. I try and stick to them but you do feel like you're winding everyone else up because they're doing at least 60 when the temp sign has said 50. How often are these enforced?
