To think this is a bit off in times when people will be choosing between food and heating?

I won't mention names. But this 'celeb' has 4.5 million followers.

Her latest post is as follows

'And our Utility Room is complete 🥲❤️ Those of you guys that have followed my crazy account since the start will know I've always dreamt of having a utility room... and never thought I'd ever have one but here she is? I still can't believe it! I get so excited to just come in here every evening, put a wash load on, fold clothes, hang up missing socks 😂 and stand on my Home Bargains step for absolutely no reason at all 😂'

I just think it's so distasteful since her following is largely accredited to a certain demographic, usually stay at home mums etc. many of which will feel so shit to see this. We can all control what we choose to click on but it just seems so irresponsible given her larger following and influence

She’s made her money by creating content for social media so if her followers don’t like it, they’ll unfollow her and she’ll stop getting as much money and she’ll very quickly change the content of her posts. This will police itself. As someone who has just admitted isn’t struggling, you don’t need to get pissed off on behalf of those that are struggling. Thyey are quite capable of doing that themselves. If it pisses them off. People on lower incomes don’t need faux concern from the middle class who thinks it’s distasteful for an influencer known for cleaning to put some content out that she has a room specifically designed for cleaning.

PumpkinClementina · 22/08/2022 11:31

I'm sorry OP I just can't get worked up about someone having a posh utility room. Your anger is misplaced.

The utility companies making massive profits while costs are soaring and people are scared they won't be able to afford to heat their homes this winter on the other hand...

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 22/08/2022 11:19

You are unreasonable to follow anyone who gets excited about folding laundry.

Well since I've bought a new clothes airer (it's got little fold out arms to hang shirts on and loads more space!) I do actually get quite enthusiastic about the laundry. Though I don't tend to share that for obvious reasons. And it was bought to save electricity. But it is exciting!
And I'm now contemplating bringing my little set of steps (£22.57 on Amazon, 7 years ago, a real bargain) downstairs to stand on them in my utility room. I'm sure I'll get a real buzz. Not sure why I'd need them in there, but hey, it's fun to stand on them for no reason. Apparently.

Mrsjayy · 22/08/2022 11:31

The journey nonsense is all about the likes and hearts isn't it,? It is how influencers make their money.

A580Hojas · 22/08/2022 11:33

I find it really very hard indeed to sympathise with people who follow any of these influencers, especially if it makes them anxious and/or jealous. It's such a stupid thing to do.

Social Media is an insidious addiction. Just delete instagram and get on with life. I want to shake people by the shoulders sometimes!

TurkishDelightForTheLittlePrince · 22/08/2022 11:33

Yikes. How fucking basic must you be to a) “always have dreamed of having a utility room” and b) talk about building one as a “journey”.

I can’t get too arsed about your actual point though OP.

I'd quite like a utility room

Kanaloa · 22/08/2022 11:37

What do you want celebs to post? I think it’s more distasteful when they try to pretend they’re ‘like us’ ie posting about how hard lockdown was or eating ‘struggle meals.’ For me that’s really out of touch.

This is like moaning that Kate Middleton’s riding a horse while you’re struggling for petrol in your Vauxhall. It’s life. Celebs are rich and have too much money and are out of touch generally. I don’t follow many celebrities, and certainly no ‘influencer’ types, because of that.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/08/2022 11:41

@fufflecake

'Blowing out someone else's candle won't make yours shine brighter.'

So very very true. I just tend to think 'silly mare'

allinatizzy · 22/08/2022 11:46

It's not my kind of thing and I'm sure I'd find her annoying, but someone bragging about doing laundry in their new utility room feels rather mild, compared to the extravagant lifestyles some celebrities lead (all while lecturing the rest of the world on climate change and how we need to stop being selfish and suffer to save the planet 🙄).

Adversity · 22/08/2022 11:48

You don’t have to follow anyone.

What do you want people to do in this climate? Give all their disposable money to charity or sit in sackcloth and ashes being miserable?

If people didn’t follow influencers they would be no one.

millerpie · 22/08/2022 11:49

You could of just said it’s Hinch 😂

balalake · 22/08/2022 11:05

If you able to respond to this person's social media, then just a simple 'please think of those who have to choose between eating and heating and all have some perspective' is an appropriate response.

That’s not an appropriate response. It’s a weird response and I’d presume if I saw that that the person didn’t have a good grasp of social norms. An appropriate response to following a lifestyle influencer when you dislike aspirational lifestyle posts would be finding the big button that says ‘unfollow’ and clicking it.

Endlesssummer2022 · 22/08/2022 11:53
  1. People are allowed to have more than others. There’s something spectacularly British and weird in not wanting anyone to have more than you.
  2. Nobody has to follow these people.
cbatopainttheshed · 22/08/2022 11:54

It's not a race to the bottom op. Not everyone is choosing between heating and eating. Yes some are, which is totally a shit situation, but it doesn't mean that those that aren't should hide away and be ashamed of having something nice that they enjoy. If the posts encode sadness and envy then just unfollow, it's not hard.

abovedecknotbelow · 22/08/2022 11:56

I dislike her, her methods and her bloody Zolflora obsession. I don't follow her, simple.

It's not a race to the bottom though, people can still be successful and there are still plenty of people who aren't deciding between heating and eating. Do they have to hide away?

shinynewapple22 · 22/08/2022 11:57

I think pictures of multiple holidays on Caribbean holidays by private jet are distasteful . I honestly couldn't get worked up by someone's utility room - one way or another .

Fairyliz · 22/08/2022 11:59

There’s some nice kitten videos on there op if you are getting too stressed.
I often look at them if I have a few spare minutes. Really cute and cheer me up.

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/08/2022 10:47

I agree with the others above.

But I really need to know who this is now.

Mrs Hinch

sandpr · 22/08/2022 12:01

Naming who it is, is against talk guidelines so my thread will no doubt be deleted now Envy

OP posts:
Carrotmum · 22/08/2022 12:04

I have a utility room it does not make me better than anyone else though, nor does it bring me joy. Actually a step might be handy as I’m a bit of a short arse. Unfortunately mine’s somewhat of a dumping ground, this might inspire me to have a bit of a sort out so thanks Mrs Hinch.

BaileySharp · 22/08/2022 12:06

Even I guessed Mrs hinch and I've never read her posts 😆

MillyWithaY · 22/08/2022 12:10

Nobody is forced to follow these 'influencers' - I don't follow any. I presume you understand that people can unfollow if they don't like the content. And as a PP said, it's a utility room not a yacht!

Should restaurants black out their windows so those who can't afford to eat out don't have to see those who can? Should high end stores do the same? Should adverts for foreign holidays be banned because lots of people can't afford them?

FleetingGlance · 22/08/2022 12:10

I haven’t looked at her page in years and just went to have a little look because of this thread...

all the grey decor is gone! :O it’s all creams and neaturals and sage greens. No crushes velvet in sight!

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 22/08/2022 12:10

If I put a packet of Asda smart price pasta in my Range Rover, and brag about my overall car, does that still mean I'm not bragging? Same principle applies`

What principle? Are you trying to run your car on pasta? Seriously, let us know if that works.
