Aldi beans have gone up from 25p to 38p

that's 13p per tin. I used to get 4 for £1.00 and those same 4 are costing me £1.52.
I just cant get my head around how I'm going to afford to feed my children if the basics keep shooting up this much. I wouldn't mind so much the luxury items going up by the same rate but the basics. Bread is 65p too for the cheaper one. I'm sure it was 45p before.
cheese was £1.89 and now it's £2.19.
I was going to buy some birdseye fish fingers on Iceland (I'm an aldi girl i was just passing Iceland and thought why not I like the crispy battered ones as a treat instead of breadcrumbs) and it was £7 for a pack of 48. They would be about £4 before and I'd only get them on offer for £3.50.

How can this be? I'm a thrifty shopper, I batch cook and freeze I shop the bargains. Its really getting me down. I can't even think about electricity. I just keep putting that at the back of my mind.

If Brexit is the cause of this, it’s certainly affecting a lot of EU and non EU countries too, who knew Brexit would mess up the world so bad, it’s almost like the EU should have done more to keep us in

No-one said Brexit is the cause of this.

It's not helping though, is it?

You can't rip yourself away from long-established frictionless supply chains, while also cutting off a huge supply of labour, without incurring inflation. It was inevitable.

Mrs Terry pratchett
Well we all knew this would happen because of brexit. It's absolutely unbelievable it was voted for or even an option.

tories- who wants life to be very difficult?
voters- we do we do!

And how do you account for the sharp rise in food and fuel in Spain then? Can't be down to Brexit can it?

An item I regularly buy was 1.65, then 1.85, then 1.95, now 2.15 and no doubt when I go shopping again it will have gone up more - those price rises took place over a period of weeks, not months. Everything here in Spain has increased in price and quite significantly and seems to increase on a weekly basis. There are very few food items that do not have IVA (VAT) added on. Electric bill - just under half of it is taxes and standing charge and the price per Kw is higher than the UK and always has been, our monthly electric bill - has to be paid direct from the Bank every month and only very recently has shopping around for a better rate been available but even that is fraught with difficulties - has always been higher than anyone using the same in UK. Spanish wages are lower than the UK, rent is lower than the UK and more intergenerational family living.

Prices are going up everywhere it's not just in the UK, people here are struggling too and there is no help here either nor it seems any will on the part of the Spanish Government to do anything.

No one said it was all Brexit. But some if it is.

The OP and at least one other poster did, plus the Tory Government.

Inflation in Spain is running at 10.70% and IVA (VAT) is 21% and very few items or services have a reduced or 0 rate.

Prices are being hiked everywhere, nowhere is immune how would remaining in the EU have made any difference?

Neither the UK Government or any Government in the EU are doing well over this.

I didn't agree with Brexit but blaming it for the current situation is daft.

Now to do with a Global Pandemic that shut down the entire global system or a proxy war?

Can you explain spiraling costs in USA? Brexit there too?

Ps I voted Remain, but to blame brexit for the rising costs is a little bit silly

emotionsecho · 22/08/2022 15:42

Even if the UK had remained in the EU prices would still have risen due to the increased costs across the whole of Europe of goods and transport. Inflation would have risen just as it has in EU countries.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/08/2022 15:44

I mean researchers are saying 6% is due to Brexit. How could it have no effect, that doesn't make any sense!

JanePrentiss · 22/08/2022 15:53

250g cheese at Aldi has give up from £1.75 to £2.30... Grana padano has gone up from £1.70 to £2

I know these are silly examples in the grand scheme of things but like everyone else out shopping is rocketing up and we are frugal... Plus dc needs gluten free food so it causes us to have to be selective as to what range we have to select for certain food items.

emotionsecho · 22/08/2022 15:58

6% of what is due to Brexit? Again how does that explain 10.70% inflation in Spain and the dramatic price rises here which is still in the EU?

If the UK was still in the EU prices rises would have been passed on to consumers in the UK just as they are being passed on to consumers in the EU.

The product I mentioned is a totally Spanish product hardly likely to sell it cheaper outside of Spain are they whether that is to an EU or non EU country.

User354354 · 22/08/2022 16:11

I've just done and Aldi shop. I couldn't believe how expensive the basic, Aldi own items were. It's incredibly scary.

lightand · 22/08/2022 16:13

DmitriMendeleev · 21/08/2022 23:54

Everyone I know who shops in aldi is moaning about how much prices have increased there.

I always shop in tesco and don't seem to spend a great deal more than I did 6 months ago.

Same here.

But I switched to lidl on the whole now instead of tesco, and saving 20% on what i buy there instead of tesco.
I dont approve of the clubcard, so made the switch and dont regret it.

Im a meal prepper, I used to write my list then do the online shop. Now I look at what’s on offer, then write my list. I try not to pay full price for anything. Fresh fruit/biscuits/crisps/cordial are literally only bought from what’s on offer. I search brands like Ms Molly and buy ‘treats’ from that brand. Before I’d mindlessly buy the kids favourites.

I tried Aldi, but my shopping was more expensive having drive to the supermarket and no clubcard boost.

I have my dog food (Tails- £23 a month, cheaper than supermarket) and laundry/dishwasher tablets (smol- ~£12 a month) which helps keep the weekly shop down and saves ‘nipping’.

i do this too

But according to what is on offer.
I do have the luxury, or it seems like a luxury now, of time to traipse around different shops.

lightand · 22/08/2022 16:17

Maybe the fish fingers have been hiked up in price for a few weeks so that they can go on a 'half price' offer soon.

I gave up on fish fingers more than a year ago. Battered fish works out cheaper.

Limmers14 · 22/08/2022 13:05

We’ve kept our food shop for two people to an average of £60 per week but that’s cutting back on treats and the weekly ready meal when we both have evening activities. I’m grateful we can both cook well and know how to make cheap, nutritious meals but we’ve had moments in the supermarket where we’ve put stuff back on shelves. For example, a 1.6l carton of Tropicana in Sainsburys is now £4.60!!

Tropicana is dreadful price.

Wearefoooked22 · 22/08/2022 16:23

Yes their bread was 45p ‘now 65p,juice was 65p now 95p!… all the cheap noodles are always sold out,I started buying cup a soups now they don’t seem to have in my local aldi…My food bill has gone up by £40 a week… I’m worried

lightand · 22/08/2022 16:27

While we are all looking at food, dont forget to look at what other people in your household are up to, and spending on.
Hobbies, insurance, expensive gadgets etc.

Sometimes it feels like us women are trying and scrimping, yet men are still spending on who knows what.

Shout me down if you want to. Just saying.

Of food inflation, which is what the thread is about.

Are PPs really suggesting that leaving the worlds largest trading bloc had no effect on prices? Seems super unlikely.

But it's not the only factor, which I said in my PP. it's one of many, some worldwide.

Rosehugger · 22/08/2022 16:35

Look into cooking with dried beans as well. It's more of a faff to soak and cook but works out much cheaper

Not when you factor in the energy cost of having a gas ring on for an hour.

Shout you down based on a totally unfounded sexist comment.

Well, while men are coutning the pennies and cutting costs where they can, women spending money on nails, make up and gossip magazines doesn't help. Just saying. 🙄

KittenKong · 22/08/2022 16:42

You can use a pressure cooker - I’ve not done the numbers to see if it’s cheaper than a gas hob though.

NotQuiteUsual · 22/08/2022 16:53

Our weekly shop keeps going up. I'm sticking to the budget and getting so much less for my money. We worked so hard to get ourselves financially secure, then this happened and we're back to budgeting every penny. The quality has declined significantly too. Bottle of wine costs the same, but I can't get that bottle of wine since the basics have gone up a third and are less filling.
