Aldi beans have gone up from 25p to 38p

that's 13p per tin. I used to get 4 for £1.00 and those same 4 are costing me £1.52.
I just cant get my head around how I'm going to afford to feed my children if the basics keep shooting up this much. I wouldn't mind so much the luxury items going up by the same rate but the basics. Bread is 65p too for the cheaper one. I'm sure it was 45p before.
cheese was £1.89 and now it's £2.19.
I was going to buy some birdseye fish fingers on Iceland (I'm an aldi girl i was just passing Iceland and thought why not I like the crispy battered ones as a treat instead of breadcrumbs) and it was £7 for a pack of 48. They would be about £4 before and I'd only get them on offer for £3.50.

How can this be? I'm a thrifty shopper, I batch cook and freeze I shop the bargains. Its really getting me down. I can't even think about electricity. I just keep putting that at the back of my mind.

I was going echo some pp that I'm finding lidl is more expensive than Tesco for some things so it's good to look around. Pepperoni slices are 15p cheaper in Tesco for example. Blue milk on Lidl goes off as soon as its opened so that's not a saving either.

I now rotate my shops. Shopping around is going to be the norm but it's not more expensive in travel if you plan it out. Eg I bulk buy my sainsbury's bits each fortnight when I'm.there filling up my car.

It is all really depressing. I worked in manufacturing years ago, and it was a struggle at times for manufacturers then- I expect it is even worse now.

with all the price increases it will affect the whole of the supply chain.

icecoffeeisland · 22/08/2022 13:35

Sainsbury's Basics baked beans are 21p a tin (on an Aldi price match, so Aldi must sell a cheaper option too). Tesco are 22p.

I don't pay full price for bread (or any bakery items). There's never a shortage of 10-20p yellow sticker loaves in the supermarkets near me, so I always have a spare one in the freezer. Same goes for milk. I appreciate not everyone has access to good yellow sticker bargains, or enough freezer space to store them, but if you do you can eat very cheaply. If not, then you can still live pretty cheaply on Basics/Value ranges, which taste perfectly fine to me.

Unphased · 22/08/2022 13:36

If Brexit is the cause of this, it’s certainly affecting a lot of EU and non EU countries too, who knew Brexit would mess up the world so bad, it’s almost like the EU should have done more to keep us in

Plouty · 22/08/2022 13:44

Aldi's Everyday Essentials beans are 22p. But lots of items (cheese, yoghurt etc) have been increasing by 10p or 12p recently - but I still find Aldi a hell of a lot cheaper than Tescos/Sainsburys/Morrisons.

IncessantNameChanger · 22/08/2022 13:45

That's another thing I find in Lidl - they never have the basic brands of eg pasta, ketchup, beans etc in stock so even in theory it's cheaper in Lidl, if they only have the premium brands in stock you'd be better off in Tesco with the basic, own brand or premium brands all in stock to choose from ( however that offend arent in stock online)

AmberGer · 22/08/2022 13:45

Maybe the fish fingers have been hiked up in price for a few weeks so that they can go on a 'half price' offer soon.

makinganavalon · 22/08/2022 13:48

Everything is going up and it's scary.
I'm at a crossroads where my youngest child is just starting funded nursery so I was thinking: maybe I'd like to have another but now I'm thinking it's a good opportunity to get another job while she's at nursery so we can afford to heat the house!
It's sad but there it is. At least I have that option.
Every time I go to Aldi I have to cross something off the list as we just can't afford it anymore

thelongconmom · 22/08/2022 11:25

@Solongtoshort glad you're essentially boycotting tescos. If we all are forces to make choices and it starts effecting the big companies profits perhaps something will be done.

On this basis, I would check out the Enough is Enough campaign that has been set up by Zara Sultana (Coventry's MP) and some of the trade union leaders.

If you really want to take some drastic action check out Don't Pay UK (though I would do your research and weigh up the pros and cons before you cancel any Direct Debits!)

Our weekly shop is around £45 . I’m not complaining as it used to be more, can’t work out if we are mentally cutting back with out realising or have just changed eating habits.
With both of us I’m back in the office now I think we are going for simpler dishes, jacket potatoes, tacos, fajita style bowl, spag Bol and Dahl are all on the menu this week and will give us some leftovers for the freezer.

On the weekend we write the meals for each day of the week and then go with a list and try to stick to it as much as possible.

I Noticed Tesco had some offers on beans (branston) so topped up on them but can’t remember the offer and got some tin tomatoes 4 for £1 rather than getting them in aldi. I find the international food bit is good for tins at cheaper pricing.

Everything is made fresh and not pre done apart from the odd pizza. Pretty much always shop at aldi, I haven’t noticed too many things yet that are making me put them back but I’m sure there will be soon.

Coastalcreeksider · 22/08/2022 13:52

I've just checked my till receipt for Aldi baked beans bought this morning and they were 420g tin 37p.

Springblossom2022 · 22/08/2022 14:01

Unfortunately I think this is only the beginning. If Martin Lewis is correct, the energy prices in winter are going to be catastrophic for most working class and middle class households. I went to an incredible animal sanctuary in June and the whole experience really changed my outlook on eating meat and animal products. I was on the brink of tears reading the stories of cows who had been saved from intensive farming and pigs rescued literally en-route to the slaughterhouse. Made me realise how odd it then was that I was intending to go home and have beef burgers for tea! So I've been cutting meat out and am hoping to go fully vegan, but it is so expensive for someone like me who really struggles with certain food textures and tastes. Switching to oat milk is proving to be too expensive, and the 'fake meats' are simply extortionate. I don't always have time to cook from scratch with fresh food due to working so much (I'm self employed) as I need the money, but the vegan alternatives are so expensive. I'm doing what I can to save (going to Aldi, homebargains, using Tesco Clubcard, filling up with petrol at Costco) but it's so hard when my partner and I are also so busy so we sometimes have to have an easy 'shove it in the oven' meal or nothing. Todays lunch was half a banana eaten in the car because I have back to back jobs until late.

Apparently Asda basic range have gone back to their original prices after complaints (led by Jack Munro)

Not really. The issue was that during issues with supply chain a particular asda didn't have value stuff in stock properly. If that's the one. That was at the beginning if a year

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/08/2022 14:19

I switched to Lidl for a few weeks instead of Sains. I didn’t find it much cheaper, and the chicken was cheaper in Tesco.

countdowntonap · 22/08/2022 14:21

@autumn1610 please can I have your Dahl recipe? Your weekly shop sounds like a bargain.

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 14:33

Things at Lidl have shot up today I noticed - orange juice is up 40p, bread had already gone up 20% spring onions up 20% and so on. Milk was £1.45 not long ago it was £1.19.

I'm fortunate to not be overly price sensitive, we have the cushion of being able to drop to the more economy ranges within Lidl and could reduce our meat consumption for instance but others are already living on the cheapest ranges

gogohmm · 22/08/2022 14:39

I should add that dsd has actually had to give up wanting to move away because she's so worried about money. Living here the house is warm and she's fed (she also said she will give us 20% of her wages without asking which I thought was fair (we'll save them to hand back as a surprise). She can't be the only young person really worrying so giving up job opportunities

Castawaywilson · 22/08/2022 14:49

The price for food in glass jars will also go up since many jars are made in Ukraine. The jar will be worth more than the food in it. It’s already noticeable where I live, and apparently it will become worse this winter.

Puffalicious · 22/08/2022 14:53

I've been noticing this for months. I'm an Aldi shopper. Just this week's increases: ice-cream 20p, fresh juice 20p (36p increase since June), crisps 30p, avocado 15p, coleslaw 10p, smoked salmon 40p, peppers 25p and on it goes.

The worst has been their free-range chicken fillets. They were £3.29 for two forever; now £4.49, up and up the past, few months. I need 2 packs for stir-fry/ fajitas - almost £20. I refuse to buy non free range, so if it goes up anymore it'll be vegetarian all the way (I'm vegetarian but DH and 3 boys aren't. We already have 3 meat-free meals a week- not sure they'll like any more!).

Boris’s Broken Brexit Bankrupt Britain

True, but the rest of the party let it happen. Politics as a whole needs to change.

Atmywitsend29 · 22/08/2022 14:58

I live in a village, about 10 miles from the nearest town centre. We have a village shop and a small "local/express" type supermarket that only carries the real basics and brand name stuff.

We have to drive to Aldi, the shop that used to cost £130 now costs £170+, luckily fuel is slowly coming down in price but it is still nearly 1.90 a litre for diesel.
We have tried online shopping aswell, but Morrisons home delivery has risen in price and is it me or can you not easily find the cheapest range goods online?

Op, I wonder if there is a Larder near you? Or a Community Fridge?
We have one in our local church and shops, farmers, etc donate goods to it and you can just pop along to grab some bits for free. They're designed to tackle food waste.
Also the Too Good To Go app, and the Olio app are good for free/cheap food.

justthecat · 22/08/2022 15:06

I’ve been struggling to get laundry tabs for the same quantity and price. Look at savers online, I stocked up there and they do shower gels etc for £1 but they’re actually bigger bottles than usual
