Tim Hortons

I've moved to an area which has a Tim Hortons. I've tried it twice and on both occasions I've really not enjoyed it, nor do I see the fuss with it. The Tim bits weren't even that nice. The hot chocolate was so sickly too!

AIBU in thinking it's overhyped rubbish or am I missing something?

YANBU! It’s totally overhyped.

KyaClark · 21/08/2022 14:41

It's cheap crap

Towcester · 21/08/2022 14:44

Overhyped rubbish. A lot of these chains we could never try but saw them on American/Canadian tv and they seemed exotic but the reality is they are not great. Taco Bell is another one. Even five guys which is quite nice but you can get better burgers in most city centres at a gourmet burger place.

BritWifeInUSA · 21/08/2022 14:54

They’re Canadian and we have a few here in the US but they are not popular here. We have our own brands that people prefer.

I agree with the PP who said that it has a lot to do with people seeing them on TV and thinking they’re exciting or cool because they are from over here. And Taco Bell is a good example. Over here Taco Bell is where you go in the middle of the night when you’ve been out drinking or clubbing and get that urge for greasy fast food. It’s horrible. I read the local paper online of my old hometown in the UK and I saw an article that Taco Bell was opening and people actually queued all night to try it. My American husband and I laughed so much about that.

Five Guys is also awful. But I see a lot of posts on here where people rave about the place. It’s just McDonald’s with plates.

Cuck00soup · 21/08/2022 14:59

They cannot make tea which is a sin in my world. Ordered a milkshake for DD and tea for me. Go to sit down - no milk.

Go to ask for milk. Delay while staff stand around looking puzzled. Tell me to sit down & they'll bring it.

They finally bring over a whole cup of warm milk. Bless them. I haven't been back.

Andylion · 21/08/2022 15:19

I’m Canadian and have never seen the allure. (Except when one of my co-workers picks up a pack of Timbits to share. I don’t like doughnuts but really like Timbits, it makes no sense.)

Tim’s is deeply embedded in Canadian culture and they seem to be everywhere!

Testina · 21/08/2022 15:25

@BritWifeInUSA does Five Guys in the US get served on plates?! It certainly doesn’t here. I’d agree it’s overhyped but I’d disagree that it’s anything like McDonalds.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/08/2022 15:28

Lived in Canada for a while and never got the obsession. Awful coffee.

QuestionableMouse · 21/08/2022 15:30

I like the maple stuff and the timbits but agree that it's expensive!

BritWifeInUSA · 21/08/2022 15:30

@Testina I haven’t been inside one for a while but I seem to recall it was disposable plates. That’s probably been stopped now because of the ban on single-use items in restaurants. They don’t have a good reputation over here. Cheap and nasty. Anyone who hasn’t been hasn’t missed anything.

BlossomsOnATree · 21/08/2022 15:31

TIMBITS? ew!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 21/08/2022 15:31

Ah I may have to buck the trend here, we have moved to getting delivery from Tim Horton's instead of MacDonald's, after both the maccies near us messed up our order, twice!

Their breakfast (sausage and egg muffin, hash brown, hot drink) is nicer than MacDonald's. However the doughnuts seemed to be incredibly over priced.

So its now our go to for Friday morning brekkie.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/08/2022 15:33

I lived in Canada back in the mid 80s and discovered Tim Horny’s (as we called it). To a 21 year old who had until then only had a jam donut from the local high street baker, I was hooked. The choice was incredible. I also loved Dairy Queen.
However, I get the feeling I would be disappointed now.

kidsandpuppies · 21/08/2022 15:34

I’m Canadian and years ago they were very good. There was a large variety of donuts that were made on-site. Now they are on every corner and and they are not good, at all. I won’t go there.

Skipsabeat · 21/08/2022 15:37

We’ve recently got one in our town. I love the coffee and the doughnuts (not had the timbits though). The breakfast is nice on the deal but I prefer a McDonalds breakfast. Not eaten lunch or dinner there as it’s far too expensive for what it is!

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 21/08/2022 15:39

I love it, their coffees are incredible

georgarina · 21/08/2022 15:48

I don’t like doughnuts but really like Timbits, it makes no sense.

Most Timbits are cake donuts rather than yeast donuts so that might be why! I'm the same.

CoffeeIsForClosers · 21/08/2022 15:49

I used to live there c20 years ago and LOOOOOVED it. Nothing like going in on a freezing morning to a hot coffee and a fresh doughnut, looking at the mounds of snow outside and the ice-blue sky ❤

AND I was young, so I could do this and yet remain effortlessly slim and pretty. Sigh.

Sooveritallnow · 21/08/2022 16:05

Its the worst, most over priced fast food place ive been to. No idea what the hype about it is either, rude staff, dull dreary swaying areas, poorly cooked food with an odd taste and very expensive for what it is

Suncreamqueen · 21/08/2022 16:17

The foods rubbish at ours, although I do like the timbits.
the coffees decent though.

Lunar270 · 21/08/2022 16:28

We have TH but I've never been. Kids have and weren't impressed.

I think most of these chains are best left in their home countries TBH. I love Five Guys cajun fries but their burgers are better stateside. Same with Taco Bell.

The trouble is, when you've visited these places in the US etc. you want to try then here and it's not the same but costs loads more. A Five Guys meal is worth $10. Definitely not worth £10.

LovinglifeAF · 21/08/2022 16:30

I think it’s absolutely shit. The coffee is disgusting, the breakfast is vile. Donuts and timbits ok but cheaper and better elsewhere

Bananasalad · 21/08/2022 16:34

Lived in Canada for while. Tim Hortons seemed to regarded in same league as Walmart (i.e trashy) by them. It was only the timbits that were acceptable.
Not being spoiled for choice with coffee back home in the UK at the time, I quite enjoyed a TIm Hortons. They probably the equivalent of any chain coffee outlet.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/08/2022 16:38

Are these new in the UK? Drove past one the other day and hadn't heard of them before and then a friend was talking about them and now this thread.

dampgreg · 21/08/2022 16:38

I was so excited when Tim hortons opened here a few weeks back. Turns out it's shit.
