Tim Hortons

I've moved to an area which has a Tim Hortons. I've tried it twice and on both occasions I've really not enjoyed it, nor do I see the fuss with it. The Tim bits weren't even that nice. The hot chocolate was so sickly too!

AIBU in thinking it's overhyped rubbish or am I missing something?

We used it a lot for breakfasts and quick lunches on family holidays with dc in Canada as it was cheap, fast and reliable, and there was one on practically every corner. I also loved the way you get cream for your coffee. Have never been to one in the UK but I can imagine it wouldn't translate that well.

Luckymummytoone · 21/08/2022 16:40

It’s amazing actually in Canada but in the US and UK I’ve found it rubbish!

This. I grew up in Canada and went often. Was super excited when they opened it in Cardiff and then went and was like how have you managed to ruin Tim Hortons?! Returned to Canada a year later and it was still delicious.

Thatsplentyjack · 21/08/2022 16:44

Yeah it is cheap crap but I love it 🤷‍♀️ if you don't like it just do go.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/08/2022 16:45

I totally agree about Taco Bell. I was so excited when they made it to the sunny climes of Barnsley 5 or 6 years ago, only to be crashingly dissapointed when I actually had one.Not quite the same without the Californian sun.

Thesearmsofmine · 21/08/2022 16:48

I was underwhelmed by it. Was ok but nothing amazing.

MasterBeth · 21/08/2022 16:54

I have no idea why anyone would get excited by the opening of a chain coffee shop. Another drive-thru to buy factory cakes and generic coffee-flavoured drinks. Whoop de doo.

tttigress · 21/08/2022 16:56

Not really a fan, but don't tell me Canadian relatives that treat it as some kind of church.

I told them once, I liked the other Canadian Chain Second Cup (which admittedly is more upmarket), it didn't go for well!!

IHateWasps · 21/08/2022 16:56

Are these new in the UK

They're rapidly expanding. They opened their first stores in and around Glasgow in 2017.

IHateWasps · 21/08/2022 16:57

First U.K stores.

AllThatAndMore · 21/08/2022 17:01

As a Canadian who grew up with Tim Hortons , it has gone downhill . I’m embarrassed by it . It use to be decent 10+ years ago .

gogohmm · 21/08/2022 17:01

The menu wasn't the same in the U.K. branch.
It's just fast food anyway

teezletangler · 21/08/2022 17:04

It's OK in Canada, used to be much better, but the doughnuts are still good (coffee has always been terrible). As others said it's the sort of place you use for a quick meal / pit stop on a trip. You have to get a box of Timbits on a road trip!

It's dreadful in the UK if my experience at the Leicester one is anything to go by. They seem to have changed all the recipes. At any rate I think it's a uniquely Canadian phenomenon and doesn't translate well to the UK.

TalbotAMan · 21/08/2022 17:05

One opened near us and the DC wanted to go.

I'm coeliac. There was one item on the menu that was gluten free. Just one.

veggiemonster · 21/08/2022 17:05

I really love the coffee and food but every time I go they get my order wrong so I haven't been back for months.

LubaLuca · 21/08/2022 17:06

I like Tim Horton's. Their choice of vegetarian options is decent and a bit more than an afterthought. I like the coffee too, and they're nicer places to sit than other fast food chains (they don't attract kids, which helps).

tttigress · 21/08/2022 17:08

I kind of think the mistake people might be making is to compare it with Starbucks, Costa etc. I see it more of a pre Starbucks place, the kind that had massive jugs of drip coffee.

helenaaise · 21/08/2022 17:08

Their coffee is ok, but the Timbits were laced with cinnamon and made me feel Ill. Dramatic, but I don't like cinnamon.

Yep, fellow Canadian and fully agree. Funnily enough, the good memories have made me get my back up at the hating comments on this thread 😁 but it really has gone downhill. It’s been under American ownership for awhile now, I bet you could track the decline back to that.

Changechangychange · 21/08/2022 17:11

They do you a reliable cheap coffee, toasted bagels/breakfast muffins (used to take an egg and cheese breakfast bagel on the tram each morning), do nice Frappuccino knock-offs in summer, and provide somewhere for homeless people to get out of the cold in Toronto winters. You’ll notice I don’t mention the donuts; that is because they are revolting.

They aren’t meant to be artisan coffee shops - they are McDonalds/Greggs alternatives, not Starbucks/Costa.

Second Cup is great! Would be more than happy if a couple opened over here.

KohlaParasaurus · 21/08/2022 17:17

I went to one when I was on holiday in Canada, just because it had to be done. Once was enough. Not tempted to go to Tim Horton's here in preference to the more established chains unless the only other option was Subway.

Gingerkittykat · 21/08/2022 17:22

I love the Tim Horton's breakfast, I think it is £3.99 for a bagel and french vanilla coffee and you can buy a box of TimBits for £1 at the same time (I think they are normally about £3-£4 the rest of the day). It's far superior to a McDonalds breakfast.

I also love the hot dog meal. In March they had a deal when dinner meals were £3.99 at night and I went and got dinner a few times. I would never pay full price for their daytime meals though.

The service at the drive through is really fast but in the store, it is ridiculously slow each time I went in. The store I go to is much nicer inside than a typical fast food place so I'm happy to go and sit there for a coffee.

I think the doughnuts and TimBits are really overpriced but my DD loves them. She has had a couple of Too Good To Go boxes from there where she got loads of baked goods and she was in heaven.

I’ve been once and never again….awful, just awful .

I lived in Canada back in the mid 80s and discovered Tim Horny’s (as we called it). To a 21 year old who had until then only had a jam donut from the local high street baker, I was hooked. The choice was incredible. I also loved Dairy Queen.
However, I get the feeling I would be disappointed now.

Was he a known lothario, then? My TH knowledge is v limited. Hockey player. Bit of a boozer. Successful move into coffee and doughnuts.
