Vulva / vagina

This is lighthearted but I'm irritated!
DH maintains that there is no real difference between the vulva and vagina and argues with me when I tell him there is.
It's very silly. I say that the vagina in the inside part and the vulva is labia minora/ majora. He is totally BU?

I only knew the whole thing as vagina until I started reading Mumsnet a couple of years ago. My mind was totally blown when I realised it was actually vulva. In real life I only hear people refer to it as vagina and apart from me and my family now I've never heard anyone refer to it as a vulva

Well to be honest no one seemed to use the word vulva until about a decade again. It was always just known as the vagina.
Back in my school days (late 80s/early 90s) when we were taught the names we were taught the outside parts were called the labia.
I don't think I ever heard the word vulva until a few years ago.
So I don't think he is being that thick.

You remember incorrectly. I'm much older than you and knew the difference. It's not some new invention.

I don't think he is being that thick.

It's not thick to not know something. It is thick to learn the correct information and ignore it because you can't be arsed to understand something relatively straightforward.

Said yesterday "did you know that the vagina has 6 holes?" I said it didn't. He them proceeded to name 4 holes on the vulva and got shirty when I pointed out the inaccuracy.

What are these 4/6 holes? Surely there are three?

The anus isn't a hole in the vulva. Men have anuses too. Some of them are nothing but anus.

It's the urethra, vagina and the two tentacle holes.

Does it matter? No one outside of MN calls it a vulva everyone says vagina irl. Never heard anyone refer to it as a “vulva” only on here.

That's right: you have never heard that, therefore it can't be true. All these people who have heard it must be fibbing. I imagine you not believing Sweden exists because you've never been.

@PickAChew I am only saying what I remember being taught at school. Unless you were at the same school as me then your teachers may have taught differently.
But as for not ever hearing the word vulva until a few years ago - well that's true. I didn't. Infact as someone else on this thread I think Mumsnet was where I first heard (or was made more aware)of it.

Im a nurse and the vulva is the correct anatomical terminology - vulva outside Vagina inside.

Jeez I'm 60 and remember in sex Ed it all clearly labelled. But I also don't go around talking to people about it. My kids used to say 'front bottom' but did learn the correct term. Don't talk about with them much either.

Most biology lessons just label a cross section of the vagina showing the vulva but no details. I actually got told off as a trainee teacher for having my Y9s label the vulva as well. Didn't stop me teaching it properly for the next 20 years.

The quality of sex education varies wildly so I'm not surprised many people don't know the word until they come across it online.

@weebarra despite what I said in my earlier post - I will agree your husband is being a bit of a twit if he is still insisting he is right now you have told him. But there is a possibility he honestly didn't know the difference until you pointed it out.
But really - how often does this conversation come up?

i absolutely hate it when people (mainly women) use the name front bottom- use the correct terminology vulva and vagina - it’s nothing to be ashamed of!

Thinking about it though....if I had to label a diagram of male parts I don't think I could accurately say which bit is the scrotum 😕
I'm not even sure if I have spelt it correctly.

I’m with DH here as I also refer to it as my vagina unless I’m labelling/discussing the actual parts.

I’ve never heard a doctor or anyone say vulva, they always say vagina and when learning the basics of genitalia in school they say boys have a penis and girls have a vagina.
Therefore I say the same.
