How do I prove I am who I am on my birth certificate with no official name change...

New account as TOTALLY outing!

When I was born, I was given my married parents surname ( name 1 )

When I was around 10 my parents split up and I took my mothers maiden name - there was no paperwork, no deedpoll nothing ( name 2 )

When I was 16 I got my NI number/card in name 2

When I got married, my maiden name was name 2 and now I have name 3

I worked for an airline where we could add family members, I couldnt add my siblings as we had different names (airline had my first name as name 2 and my siblings had name 2)

I'm now looking at getting my Irish Citizenship (via the Grandparent route) but I cannot prove that I with name 3 am also name 1

Does anyone know what I can do?
(going to post in Legal as well - but here for traffic)

Hasn't the grandparent route to Irish citizenship ended?

not according to www.dfa.ie/citizenship/

My grandparent was born on the island of Ireland. Am I an Irish citizen?
Yes, you can apply for Irish citizenship by descent.
In these cases, you can become an Irish citizen through Foreign Birth Registration.
Once a person is entered onto the Foreign Births Register they are an Irish citizen and entitled to apply for an Irish passport.

That doesn’t make sense You can’t have applied for a passport without proof of identity (like a valid birth certificate or proof of name change via deed poll)

fruitslice · 18/08/2022 14:35

Its in name 2. and so were all my government records (NINO etc)

Doesn't mean it's legal you have technically given a false name which is against the law 😳 I would be really worried about this if I were you I hope you get it sorted asap

Are you allowed to use a name you haven't legally changed to on government documents? Here you wouldn't be.

@steff13 Where are you based? In UK, you can use any name, so long as you're not committing fraud

No. You can call yourself what you like in the UK but if you want to do anything that involves the government eg get a passport or driving licence or is subject to government regulation eg open a bank current account, sign an employment/tenancy contract etc you need a paper trail. So birth certificate >change of name deed or birth certificate > marriage certificate. Those are the only two ways you can change your legal name. Ofc you can use your original name because a birth certificate is a paper trail in itself. But you need some kind of paper.

Johnnysgirl · 18/08/2022 14:46

How on earth did you have your NI number and your passport issued in a name that wasn't your legally registered one? Hmm. Something doesn't add up there...

fruitslice · 18/08/2022 14:47

dm has replied

No there was no need at that time if you started to use a new name it became yours if your dr etc., was notified.
It only costs £15 on line to change it.
I had to do this in order to marry [stepfather]
as I refused to use the name [name1].
That was on the marriage cert and despite having a passport still had to do it.
Making my name legally [name2].
The divorce started in 1980 so all your names became [name2] from then on, as far as the schools, drs, etc.,
So you did not change your name from [name1] to [name2] I did.

The link is your parents divorce, you took your mothers name.

that cant be right? can it?

When I was little my mum informally changed my surname to that of my stepdad, when I tried to get a job (where security was extremely tight) I had to go to a solicitor and make a sworn affidavit to confirm that I am who I say I am, I needed to produce a lot of certified evidence to prove it. I also needed to produce that affidavit when I got married. My marriage certificate states both my maiden name and the name I was known as.

Hollido · 18/08/2022 14:48

Fucking strike through. Imagine arrows where the strike through is.

@notanothertakeaway yes you can use any name you please but in order to access certain documents eg passport or to do certain things eg get a current account, you have to prove who you are.

mattressspring · 18/08/2022 14:49

I had this years ago when my DM kindly changed my name unofficially to that of my step dads. It was the late 80s and she just took me to a new school and registered me as his surname. My NI number came in his name and I subsequently had proof of address etc from giving that name/NI at work. I had a passport.

When I got married though I used my BC which had my original surname. And I did this to get a different passport (many years after the other had expired) so I just applied for a first adult.

People saying this can't happen are very wrong. It can't happen now but it certainly did happen many years ago.

In your case I would check the legality especially surrounding your marriage.

AnuSTart · 18/08/2022 14:49

To change your name you just have to write that you are changing it and get it witnessed.

No lawyers needed.

Maybe do this for name one and then see if they accept that?

I'm in the US. You CAN use any name here, I can call myself She Ra Princess of Power and ask others to do the same, but unless I've legally changed my name to She Ra Princess of Power, using that name on any government documents (tax forms, etc.) constitutes fraud.

ThunderstomsAreComing · 18/08/2022 14:50

It's right - don't panic / it's legal to use any name so long as it's not with intent to deceive.

Just sign a declaration with a solicitor that you were name 1, but known as name 2 since ..

mattressspring · 18/08/2022 14:50

Oh name 2 is your mothers name? Yeah the link you are looking for will be her birth cert/marriage/divorce papers.

Johnnysgirl · 18/08/2022 14:51

What did you have to produce when you applied for your passport, op? You seem to be be so very confused 😐

ToBeHere · 18/08/2022 14:51

You don’t need a solicitor to change your name and you don’t need to pay.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 18/08/2022 14:52

You just need a retrospective deed poll. This link explains it. You don’t necessarily have to use a paid-for service, though.

sunshineandstrawberryjam · 18/08/2022 14:56

I was in a similar situation to you and I paid £30 for a deed poll declaring I, formerly known as NAME 1 wished to be known as NAME 3.

Again, that doesn't make sense. The school won't tell the government what your name is. The government gives you a NINO based on the name you're registered as on your birth certificate and subsequent child benefit claim.

ChicCroissant · 18/08/2022 14:57

I've replied on your other thread.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 18/08/2022 14:58

I think you need your parents' marriage certificate and possibly your mum's birth certificate to complete the audit trail.

nonevernotever · 18/08/2022 14:58

My best friend was in a very similar situation though another country not Ireland. She had to change her name by deed poll and include notarized affidavits from people who had known her a long time and could vouch that she was who she said she was. Consult a lawyer.

I cant remember, as I would have applied for it in the 1990s and then just renewed it
