to think that Horrible Histories is a complete work of art...

It’s completely genius. It’s taught my nine year old to have a love of history. Has given him a huge amount of facts that he has retained a year later. Has taught me a lot too!!! It’s funny and educational whilst still being cheeky and cool. I wish they’d done similar with science or geography.

My DS had the full set of Horrible Histories books when younger. It wasn't on tv then. He now has a Masters degree in History and is a welcome asset to any quiz team.

There is also a great bbc podcast called 'you're dead to me' by the same people. It's taught me loads about history 😂

Second this. The presenter, Greg Jenner, used to be the resident History nerd on HH. He's written a few entertaining history books too, I highly recommend "Dead Famous" about the history of celebrity.

SicParvisMagna · 17/08/2022 16:41

Recently went to a local Roman-themed fair and got chatting to the re-enactment guys who worked on the HH film, and most of the early series. He couldn't say enough nice things about the original (and best!) crew. We ended up talking about my fave songs before I started busting out "I love the people and the people love me so much that they restored the English Monarchy!" Luckily, he knew what I was talking about or it would have been seriously weird haha.

12-year-old and I binged it during the first lockdown, now 18 year old had all the books when she was little so it's been a fave in our house for a while. A seriously smart, witty engaging show. More needs to be made like this where it doesn't assume kids are dumb or censor and sanitise history!

littlepeas · 17/08/2022 16:43

I’d love to see some bloopers! They must have fallen about laughing so often - it must have been so much fun to film.

excitingusername · 17/08/2022 16:44

Not a huge fan of HH as I feel that ultimately the lack of gravitas for serious things is never really offset and like everything for the generations it teaches, everything is a big joke with everyone in the past portrayed as a moron or unclean. I also hate the emphasis on 'grossness' - didn't appeal to me as a child - I always hated the presumption that kids like gross, minging stuff.

I think it has it's place but was never a huge fan. I think the legacy overall is that kids come away thinking anyone before their time was ultimately stupid.

littlepeas · 17/08/2022 16:45

TinyTear · 17/08/2022 14:55

Er the first books came out in 1993

Don’t say things like this! Still refusing to believe that 1993 was nearly 30 years ago - surely it’s only 10 years ago? Maximum I will accept is 20!

ElizaJones · 17/08/2022 16:47

My DS has just completed a history degree. His love of history stems from the many episodes of HH he watched as a young boy, it’s genius.

AffIt · 17/08/2022 16:49

I bloody love HH / Yonderland / Ghosts / Bill and I'm 43 with no kids.

I learned a lot about English history in particular from HH, being Scottish.

That must be the best job in the world - just messing about with your mates all day and producing amazing TV and film.

PS - I highly recommend following Jim Howick on Twitter, he's very funny.

Love HH! Watched it with my kids and learnt so much. The songs keep showing up on my Fb feed this last week, this one about the RAF is outstanding:

See I just watch this and think mostly what insult to my Grandfather's generation (a wireless mechanic in the RAF). He would've thought this was horrendous and it doesn't represent any kind of British culture of back then so I think it does a disservice to history and kids tbh.

CaveMum · 17/08/2022 16:53

Just to bang on again about the You're Dead To Me podcast, they're really good at getting lots of historical female figures in. They do the obvious ones (Boudica, Mary Shelley, Joan of Arc etc) but also women that I didn't know much, or anything, about like Hatshepsut, Mary Seacole, Nell Gwyn, Sacagwea, Grainne O'Malley, Agrippina, Josephine Baker, Harriet Tubman, Mary Wollstonecraft and Eleanor of Aquitaine (possibly my favourite episode!).

All the series are available on iplayer.

Thanks, WomanWtf, but I’m in Canada. 🥹

My (then) 80 year old Mother adored it, she’d video it to watch. She loved all the grown up in jokes.

Longingforatikihut · 17/08/2022 17:02

I've found my people!

Love horrible histories. Love ghosts. They also did something for sky.

Don't forget the movies! Will (about Shakespeare) and the horrible histories movie about the Romans in Britain.

hoglethotel · 17/08/2022 17:05

My kids loved HH and it inspired both of them to become more interested in history generally.

My youngest still listens to the songs on her music.

It has made them much more interested in museums and the like... and yes also great for pub quizzes too.

Nowadays, ghosts is the only programme we all watch together as a family. We love HH in this house.

IndigoTinsel · 17/08/2022 17:10

Fond memories of the books as an older child/teenager.. but not seen the TV show.

What age would you say it is suitable from please?

It sounds like something I can look forward to watching with mine when they are old enough!

Did you listen to the one about Zheng Yi Sao? That was amazing!

There are books too, published about 20years ago…

We have the horrible history, horrible geography and horrible science books - they are brilliant!

CaveMum · 17/08/2022 17:25

I did - I just didn't want to attempt spelling her name and getting it wrong! The latest episode on the Terracotta Army blew my mind, I had no idea how recent the discovery was or how big the area it covers is! Wouldn't it be amazing if they were able to find a way to open the burial chamber in our lifetime!

I was just listening to that the other day! I like Phil Wang, too. 😁

Yes, it would be astonishing if they found a way to open the burial chamber without triggering the 'monster bats'!

I just got the 20 book box set for £3.75! DS is 6 weeks old so might be a while before I see an improvement in his history knowledge Grin
