It’s completely genius. It’s taught my nine year old to have a love of history. Has given him a huge amount of facts that he has retained a year later. Has taught me a lot too!!! It’s funny and educational whilst still being cheeky and cool. I wish they’d done similar with science or geography.

My ‘kids’ are in their twenties and were singing ‘stay calmer if you wanna harm a llama’ this morning.

William William Henry Stephen Henry Richard John also a favourite here!

MatildaJayne · 17/08/2022 14:56

The books are great. My boys are maths nerds and absorbed all the Murderous Maths books. We even met the author of those at a science festival, Kjartan Poskitt.

Itsnotthesameasitwas · 17/08/2022 14:57

I loved horrible histories, the songs are so catchy

I was actually singing ‘Stupid deaths’ on my walk to the shops this morning. DC now young adults, I can’t believe it’s stuck in my head all these years later 😂

My 10yo LOVES the Harmallama song Grin

AclowncalledAlice · 17/08/2022 15:04

Bob Hale was the favourite in this house.

ShirleyJackson · 17/08/2022 15:06

Do the Patchacooti.

That is all.

Oleaginus · 17/08/2022 15:08

There was an audio version as well - I used to play the CDs in the car when DCs were small and we'd all sing along together. It saved many a journey! I looked for the CDs a couple of years ago, but I don't think they're available now, sadly😞

Wotrewelookinat · 17/08/2022 15:08

Horrible histories formed a large part of our home education history learning. Learnt loads from the TV progs, read the books and followed up with visits to historical places etc.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 17/08/2022 15:09

I'm always amazed by the random facts and information DS knows because of Horrible Histories, its brilliant. Also the Masterchef bit is genius.

Crackercrazy · 17/08/2022 15:10

It’s brilliant. I quite often watch it by myself. I’ve got quite the crush on Matthew Baynton (especially as Dick Turpin!).

rightonthyme · 17/08/2022 15:13

I can do the Charles II rap. The show and books are SUCH a good springboard for budding history buffs. Also there is Mat Baynton

There is also a great bbc podcast called 'you're dead to me' by the same people. It's taught me loads about history 😂

Thank you for this, I'm definitely going to have a listen!

All hail. The King. Of Bling 🙌

Love HH! Watched it with my kids and learnt so much. The songs keep showing up on my Fb feed this last week, this one about the RAF is outstanding:

LondonJax · 17/08/2022 15:55

Love Horrible Histories! DS is now 15 years old and, if a history question comes up on a quiz he'll invariably say 'oh I know that one, they did it on HH'.

Never get bored with it - Bob Hale is our favourite too and it's become a thing in our house to say 'BUT NOT FOR LONG' to occasional sentences starting with 'looks like' - so 'looks like the rain's stopped' or 'looks like x and y are talking to each other again'. We are so very sad in our house...

We download You're Dead To Me (95 episodes on the BBC) for car journeys. Along with 30 Animals That Made Us Smarter. That's a science podcast about the way scientists learned things from animals which is changing the way we live (like how they studied bees to find quicker delivery routes). Very interesting but easy to understand www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0bhb33y.

There was a thread asking for our favourite HH song, which inspired me to look up Ain’t Staying Alive. Aside from being one of the few songs which features Larry in a lead vocal role, I love it because Matt’s dancing was strangely sexy.

I just found HH during lockdown, on Prime. I watched the first five seasons. I just settled in for a re-watch and now the first three series are not available.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 17/08/2022 16:09

We’ve watched them all and have learnt a lot and laughed a lot. The stage shows are also brilliant!

ToTheCrystalDome · 17/08/2022 16:11

Stupid deaths
Stupid deaths
They're funny cos they're true

My kids are grown up now but I still watch old HH episodes occasionally. We hosted a HH New Year party years ago - I went as Stupid Death 💀

badbaduncle · 17/08/2022 16:27

It's a work of genius.

KitBumbleB · 17/08/2022 16:34

The songs are outstanding, the cast are sublimely talented, and it all looks great fun!

I would guess that the Dick Turpin song was a sexual awakening for many young people!

imsanehonest · 17/08/2022 16:35

I play the HH songs as a 'treat' at the end of my History lessons. Always goes down well!

AclowncalledAlice · 17/08/2022 16:37

The Charles Dickens/Smiths mash-up is so clever.

Dickens with gladioli is just genius.
