to think that Horrible Histories is a complete work of art...

It’s completely genius. It’s taught my nine year old to have a love of history. Has given him a huge amount of facts that he has retained a year later. Has taught me a lot too!!! It’s funny and educational whilst still being cheeky and cool. I wish they’d done similar with science or geography.

It is. Completely agree. My DH loves it so much watching it with the kids when they were younger, we bought him the whole lot on dvd. We no longer have a dvd player, bit we still have those dvds, he can't bear to part with them!

TwoWeeksislong · 17/08/2022 14:13

There are books too, published about 20years ago…

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 17/08/2022 14:14

Check out Ghosts, same cast wrote and performed it. On iPlayer

KupoNutCoffee · 17/08/2022 14:26

I loved horrible histories, the songs are so catchy.

I also remember the books fondly from childhood. There are also horrible science and horrible geography books.

Maybe they'll be picked up and turned into TV programmes one day....

AtLeastPretendToCare · 17/08/2022 14:27

Agreed. Also love Ghosts.

DinosaursEatMan · 17/08/2022 14:27

We were watching The Axe Factor yesterday! Love the noose at ten…

Ghosts is also great.

Pixiedust878 · 17/08/2022 14:30

Agreed. We already had the Horrible Histories as I remembered them from childhood, but I also bought the Horrible Science & Horrible Geography book sets at the start of lock down (yes that was my attempt at home schooling!)

Toddlerteaplease · 17/08/2022 14:31

Yes. I've learned loads. Particularly the causes of WW1 for more effectively than when I was at school!

Gatehouse77 · 17/08/2022 14:32

I agree. Mine are young adults now but can reel off various facts from their songs. Useful in pub quizzes!!

Birdwitted · 17/08/2022 14:35

As a History teacher, I am very grateful for the love of the subject many of my students arrive with aged 11, and that's often due to horrible histories. Plus it's generally historically accurate. I have a bit of a thing for Ben Willibond. I read the books as a child and adored them (although as an adult I feel irritated by the bit at the beginning from Terry Deary when he is rude about history teachers, although I know it was written a long time ago when history was probably often taught in a very dull way).

walqlcv · 17/08/2022 14:40

There is also a great bbc podcast called 'you're dead to me' by the same people. It's taught me loads about history 😂

MassiveSalad22 · 17/08/2022 14:41

There is a science series. Horrible Science. There definitely was in the school library when I was at school; unless I’m having a Mandela Effect moment!

YANBU though, my son is 7 and knows waaaaay more about history than I do!! He used to fall asleep to their podcast and has loads of the books ❤️

Unescorted · 17/08/2022 14:42

Without it we would always come last in our local quiz.

TheWitchersWife · 17/08/2022 14:42

Myself and DH watched them before we had kids! Because they are that entertaining and very well done.
We now have them all on DVD. My boys will know history!

thesandwich · 17/08/2022 14:42

There are horrible geography/ maths/ science books?

faffadoodledo · 17/08/2022 14:45

My favourite, the Four Georges:

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 17/08/2022 14:45

Before they hit the big time, Terry Deary did personal appearances and readings, especially in County Durham. We went to every one when mine were younger, we took some books he’d written years ago which were a particular favourite of my eldest. He was lovely, chatted with them for ages and signed everything.
I still love HH now, not so much the newer series as it lacks the lovely Matthew Baynton et al.

Divebar2021 · 17/08/2022 14:46

There was a full length film about the Romans / Anglo Saxons. I seem to think the singer Kate Nash played Boudicca.

DesMoulinsRouge · 17/08/2022 14:47

YANBU. The Bloody Mary song in particular is a work of art

TyneTeas · 17/08/2022 14:50

Whenever a question about which monarch comes up, we always start singing "William, William, Henry, Stephen..."

Although this one is my personal favourite...

Horrible science is cool

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 17/08/2022 14:52

@MassiveSalad22 Horribe Science did exist but it wasn't written by the Horrible/Histories/ Ghosts crew. You might find it on youtube or I think DD watched it on Prime. Interesting but no where as good as HH.

Dead to Me is a great podcast and they do a more child friendly one.

The Who Was? Show is similar to HH in that it looks back at mainly American key historical figures, it has a young cast and used to be on Netflix, not sure if it still is but that was also interesting as I hadn't heard of many of the people before.

If you like HH and Ghosts then Yonderland on NowTV is by the same group, it is very surreal and strange but worth a watch regardless.

Treabrea · 17/08/2022 14:53

Love it. We used to watch it on weekend mornings hungover pre kids. Stupid deaths was a particular favourite

Ghosts is brilliant, one of my favourite comedies.

Snoozysnoozy · 17/08/2022 14:54

Stupid Deaths, Stupid Deaths
They're funny ’cause they're true!
Stupid Deaths, Stupid Deaths
Hope next time it's not you!
Hoo hoo!
