What’s wrong with a loo brush?

Namingchangeschangingnames · 15/08/2022 20:58

Inspired by the MN sins thread. So many people are saying their loo brush is their greatest MN sin. As a fellow sinner, I need to know what’s wrong with a loo brush?

after used i pour more bleach on it and press flush and let the clean water run over it. I needs to know

No do not have one as turns my stomach to be honest as always a gloopy wet mess. I put on a rubber glove and use bleach and scrub bottom of toilet.

ThickCutSteakChips · 16/08/2022 00:31

I can't do them, the idea of them is so vile. The bleach/poo/toilet water soup in the bottom of the container as well, eeeeek!

I was seriously thinking about the silicone ones, but then we stayed in a holiday cottage which had them, and I used one and a bit of shit got properly stuck between the little rubber nodules and would not wash off with the flush and I couldn't face just putting it back in the holder so had to use bog roll to clean it, making the entire excercise pointless!

I'm sticking to bleach for now. The limescale is a bit of a problem, but I find those tablet things work quite well below the waterline.

CrunchyCarrot · 16/08/2022 00:35

I recently changed from a bristle bog brush to a silicone one. I'm not sure I'm convinced it's better (see post above re possible shortcomings!) but my personal jury is out for now...

sunglassesonthetable · 16/08/2022 00:39

What happens to the gloves afterwards?
What about a visitor?
Teenagers just before school?
The bleach and the gloves kind of implies it's just you doing the cleaning.

Hate brushes but at least everyone can clean up after themselves.

God can't someone invent something?

IcakethereforeIam · 16/08/2022 00:54

I have a toilet duck thing (might be the same as the duck fresh pp mentioned). It's a plastic stick with a clamp at one end for paper pads predosed with cleaner. Scrub the loo, pad goes in the bin, there's usually something in there to wrap it in. I'm curious about these silicone brushes now though.

Parkinglotlatte · 16/08/2022 01:16

I don't want a loo brush in my house that other people use. They are disgusting to be in the toilet water , brought out toilet and put in the holder - think of all the bacteria going everywhere! Yuck. I keep the duck fresh stick and put the disposable brush part into a bag, holding bag over loo to stop toilet water particles going anywhere (usually my bedroom waste bin bag which is full and going to outside bin) and then Dettol spray the plastic bit. It's the cleanest way I can think to do it...

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 16/08/2022 01:27

Gross.

Wannabegreenfingers · 16/08/2022 01:35

Nothing, absolutely nothing is wrong with a toilet brush. No, I don't want to stick my hand, gloved or otherwise down the toilet.

avamiah · 16/08/2022 01:48

I paid £20 for my last one from JohnLewis and had to wait a week for delivery as it was sold out online .

Either the brush cleans the inside of our toilet or we put gloves on and get a sponge and do it ourselves..

£20 seems a bargain 🤣

RenegadeMatron · 16/08/2022 01:54

All the alternatives to a toilet brush are fine - if you are a reclusive, anti-social hermit who doesn’t let anyone over your threshold.

And let’s be honest, there’s a disproportionate number of such people on MN.

For people who do have friends and family, and who welcome them into their homes, loo brushes are a necessary evil.

They just are. 🤷🏻‍♀️

bellac11 · 15/08/2022 21:40

I admit I dont like them and dont have one

Any 'detritus' that is above the water line I wipe with toilet tissue, any below, I pour a little bit of toilet blue stuff down, wait 5 mins and flush again, Ive not known of it to remain after that

To clean the toilet you wouldnt use a loo brush anyway it takes much more that that, so a rough sponge (with green scourery bit) is used for the rim and above the water line, with cleaning fluid, then also scrub a bit under the water line. Gloves on of course

I could not imagine I would ever remove poo scraps by hand 🤮
That is disgusting and far worse that a simple brush that can be bleached and cleaned! What do you do with the gloves afterwards? Do you have to throw them away?

Festoonlights · 16/08/2022 01:59

You are not giving your guests a chance to clean after themselves so they have to do it gloveless or face the embarrassment of leaving their leftovers for you. It’s beyond grim!!

BirdWatch · 16/08/2022 02:02

I did not realize anybody did not use a brush. Anyways, I am off to check out those silicon ones on Amazon, I didn't know of their existence until reading this thread.

Summerfun54321 · 16/08/2022 02:02

Flush, bleach, brush, flush again to rinse the brush in the clean bleachy water. Brushes are only gross if you go at a massive turdy lump of loo roll with them. I would argue the bristle ones are essential in a hard water area. Not having one is really gross and embarrassing for guests.

mathanxiety · 16/08/2022 03:02

A lot of people here on MN think a loo brush is used for pushing reluctant poop down the lav. A poo stick, if you will, only with lots of bristles for the poop to stick to.

The rest of know that a loo brush is used to clean the loo after you've squirted bleach into it, and you use a plunger if you block the loo.

Stichintimesavesstapling · 16/08/2022 03:10

I have a feral toddler so can't use one at the moment. But once he's grown up a bit I'll be back to my silicon one.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 16/08/2022 03:14

I used mine today.
My toilet's now looking a lot cleaner and shinier than it did earlier when it looked minging before a lot of Toilet Duck and a bog brush clean.
So MN randomers I don't care what you think lol

whoruntheworldgirls · 16/08/2022 07:57

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 thank you Smile

xogossipgirlxo · 16/08/2022 11:06

Nothing wrong. Mumsnet isn't the only truth in the world. Do whatever suits you. You don't lick it, FGS.

TheKeatingFive · 16/08/2022 11:09

I am just glad this debate is getting the attention it deserves.

Viva La Loo Brush 😆

TheKeatingFive · 16/08/2022 11:13

Whatever about your own preferences and tolerance for sticking your hand down the bog, I think it is unfair to visitors not to have one.

But perhaps, in true mumsnet style, these people don't let visitors use the bog 😵

amicissimma · 16/08/2022 11:32

There's nothing wrong with a loo brush. I personally found that er, debris, tends to stick to the silicon ones - the plastic bristles are much easier to keep really clean specially in the dishwasher.

I suppose sticking your hand down your own toilet is OKish if you are into that sort of thing, but I prefer not to put my hand down someone else's if they have the sort of bowl that attracts skid marks. I'd rather my guests didn't feel they should put their hands down my toilet, either; I tend to like my guests.

I certainly think they are better than using great wads of toilet paper, or those dreadful 'disposible' ones like Toilet Duck, which end up either blocking the sewer or in landfill (lucky binmen, eh?)

Namingchangeschangingnames · 16/08/2022 13:08

surely no one actually puts their loo brush in the dishwasher? I mean surely not! That’s worse then the penis beaker

No, they’re just terminally unsociable, and don’t even let visitors into the house.

TheKeatingFive · 16/08/2022 14:03

hate the idea of a poo covered brush

Thats why people generally clean them
