What’s wrong with a loo brush?

Inspired by the MN sins thread. So many people are saying their loo brush is their greatest MN sin. As a fellow sinner, I need to know what’s wrong with a loo brush?

after used i pour more bleach on it and press flush and let the clean water run over it. I needs to know

I don’t like a traditional bristle brush. But I love my silicon/rubber flat brushes. I drip dry mine after use by balancing them between rim and seat. By the time I’ve done the rest of the room- they’re dry.

Can you link to yours? I can't decide which one to buy

They are gross! Why not just pour the bleach down the toilet bowl instead!?

because it doesn’t reliably get the shit streaks off? And I don’t want my friend/ the cafe owner/ the cleaner to have to clean my shit streaks off.

BertieBotts · 15/08/2022 21:47

I'm beginning to hate mine, I want something reusable that can be instantly discarded with the cleaning cloths to be put on a hot wash. However I cannot find any product that does this. I don't want it sitting there after use, but I do want it available for kids, visitors etc.

I keep looking at dusters with microfibre heads but none are the right shape.

BronwenFrideswide · 15/08/2022 21:48

I dont use bleach personally but what would be the difference between doing that or not doing that but pouring bleach on the brush once its used to clean that after you've used it to scrape away bits?

A small amount of bleach on the loo brush or in the loo brush holder thing is a world away from putting copious amounts down the toilet which is what seems to be what the non loo brush posters recommend as a means of cleaning the toilet, as I say 'tis only what I've gleaned from the many threads on here about the great loo brush debacle.

LightDrizzle · 15/08/2022 21:50

I agree they are vile but there is no alternative unless you don’t have guests.

NoEffingWay · 15/08/2022 21:51

I have this one, which I got for a lot less at TK Maxx.

I have one but it doesn't directly touch shit. I use it for scrubbing the toilet when it's already free of waste. So basically a cleaning utensil. I couldn't have one sat in the corner of the bathroom covered in nuggets thank you.

In the event of skids I just Chuck bleach down and flush.

Toosadtocomprehend · 15/08/2022 21:56

Cannot imagine life without a loo brush…just clean the container and put loo cleaner in it regularly….it really is not that difficult to understand!

ChobKnees · 15/08/2022 22:03

Have none of you heard of the Duck Fresh Brush? 🤔

dizzydizzydizzy · 15/08/2022 22:03

Good question. I was baffled. If you have hard water and don't scrub occasionally, you get a build up of limescale under the waterline.

I beg to differ.. it is very reliable lol. All i ever use and never seen a shit streak in my home

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/08/2022 22:10

@whoruntheworldgirls this one from Amazon. You get two in the pack. I’ve stuck mine on the toilet cistern, so I don’t have to grovel on the floor to reach it - and Dh uses it too.
@Namingchangeschangingnames Silicone ones don’t get that orange ‘glow’ of bacteria (even using bleach), srip
dry very quickly and tissue etc doesn’t get stuck to the bristle. Also fab as they are flexible and flat, at getting under the rim and round the bend etc.

SquirrelFan · 15/08/2022 22:16

Okay say your teen boy uses the loo, flushes, and disappears off to work. You come in a couple hours later to find streaks above and below the water line. How do you remove without a brush? Even using rubber gloves, I don't want to submerge my forearm down the pan.
And bleach and repeated flushing won't get rid.

eddiemairswife · 15/08/2022 22:20

It's one of the Mumsnet Shibboleths.

Pleiades2020 · 15/08/2022 22:42

There's nothing wrong with a (covered) loo brush. They self-clean when you scrub the loo too - though I'm curious about these silicone ones. I was trying to fix my loose toilet seat the other day, unscrewed the tiny hex nut that held it in place and it fell right into the basin. I had to reach in and extract it - nice!

shouldbesleepingnotscrolling · 15/08/2022 23:03

I cant believe people would rather stick their hand down the loo and scrub off someone else’s shit stains than have a bleached, washed toilet brush in the bathroom!
We’ve always had loo brushes, seems the best of the two options to me!

ThinWomansBrain · 15/08/2022 23:11

I agree that silicone brushes are tons better - the Joseph Joseph one is great

I love how people would rather put their hand down a toilet to clean it instead of a brush 😂

Right?!?!?!

Jaguarxxx · 15/08/2022 23:16

Toilet brushes are the spawn of the devil!! To clean my toilet I have a pack of disposable gloves and a pack of cloths.. give it a good clean above and below water level and dispose of cloth and gloves afterwards. Bleach now and then. Works a dream.

Same here. They're brilliant. And I say this as a Crohn's patient 😳😆

GiantCheeseMonster · 15/08/2022 23:22

I totally understand how you can clean a toilet without a brush. But how do you expect your guests to remove their skid marks without one? It’s mortifying leaving a loo messy and not being able to clean it and repeated flushing doesn’t always do the job. I’d rather not stick my hand down someone else’s toilet, but what alternative are you giving me if I also don’t want to leave a mess?

Orangesare · 15/08/2022 23:27

If the loo brush is considered manky, what do people do with the rubber gloves they have reached down into the loo with to scratch the shit off?
For the record I have a loo brush but I always clean round the seat etc with loo roll with cleaner in it a flush because I don’t want toilet cloths around

RumbleStrutt · 15/08/2022 23:39

Hazarding a guess most people disgusted don’t live in a v hard water area with lime stone build up. It’s not a skid mark issue, it’s limestone build up. Pouring limestone remover down and waiting 20 mins does not work alone.

some v odd and unenvironmental views on here.
