His latest gig has been cancelled after he told racist jokes and got his dick out. Why are other comedians defending his right to do this? This behaviour is not ok, AIBU to think this is indecent and disgusting behaviour and the venue were correct in cancelling him.

OP posts:
BoredofthisCrap7 · 15/08/2022 18:12

He doesn't "shove his dick" in anyone's face.
That's hyperbole of the highest order.

Also, he DOES say he will get his penis out, in his OWN video promotion of the tour.

Again. This is an act that has been running for nearly four decades. He has done it since the very beginning. I saw him nearly 30 years ago and he was doing it then.

The show is labelled as VERY OFFENSIVE with strong themes that people may find distressing.

Don't book a damn ticket if you are of a sensitive nature.
Simple.

JemimaPuddlegoose · 15/08/2022 18:23

That is simply untrue and how fucking dare you accuse the women in question of being liars.

The actual show listings page is right here: tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/jerry-sadowitz-not-for-anyone

Not a single word about nudity or potential nudity, and the only content warning is this: "This show contains strong language and themes some may find distressing" which hardly gives an accurate description. I don't see any "VERY OFFENSIVE" anywhere there, do you? No.

Oh and I can't even watch the video you've linked, as it comes up with an error message saying "this video is restricted and can only be watched on YouTube."

It's totally beyond the pale to suggest that women should take on the responsibility of thoroughly researching every act they see ahead of time (in Edinburgh, where it's the norm to see ten shows a day), just on the off-chance that there's nudity that the act refused to mention in the show description or content warning, even though that's literally what the content warning is for.

Gosh if only there were internet-enabled apps to help.

That's all in your own head unfortunately.
I didn't accuse anyone of anything.
Or suggest anyone research anything.

If you have specific information about a specific woman who had a penis actually shoved in her face, I'm sure we'd all love to see it, and not a second hand story on a forum.

You seem to have a lot of info no-one else has access to.

noblegiraffe · 15/08/2022 18:31

His own promotional video says he'll get his dick out - your complaint there appears to be with the Fringe website who failed to mention this?

The tour also appears to be called 'Not For Anyone'. Sadowitz appears to have done his job in flagging the unsuitability of the content.

Floisme · 15/08/2022 18:37

Damn right I'd do some research first if I were going to a festival that cost insane amounts of money and that had a reputation for edginess and rule breaking.

If the venue gave insufficient warning - and there seems to be disagreement over that so I can't tell from this thread - then that's a fault in my opinion, and one that the venue should correct, e.g. re-issuing more comprehensive information, offering refunds to anyone who was not aware of what they were going to see. It still doesn't justify their banning the show.

JemimaPuddlegoose · 15/08/2022 18:42

It's very telling that the MRA trolls have launched a concerted and what appears to be coordinated attack on any woman who pushes back on male entitlement, or who supports women's rights.

Sorry, not going to let you derail the thread by attacking women.

If you have specific information about a specific woman who had a penis actually shoved in her face

That is literally what the entire incident behind this thread is about: that a SPECIFIC female audience member complained about JS shoving his naked penis in his thread. Other audience members have confirmed it. Plenty of press coverage have included this detail, and JS does not deny exposing his penis to her.

*His own promotional video says he'll get his dick out - your complaint there appears to be with the Fringe website who failed to mention this?

So you expect women to go to the individual website of every act they see, and watch every single video on that website? You think that's a reasonable thing to expect?

Why did JS refuse to include "may contain nudity" in the show listing description HE submitted?? Edfringe has no involvement in what info the many thousands of acts they host choose to submit or not submit in their event listing.

*No, it counts as exposing his penis."

"Exposing your penis doesn't count as nudity" takes the absolute fucking biscuit of all the MRA shite I've read online.

The "research" is visiting the edfringe.com website, which contains comprehensive event description and content warnings submitted by each act.

Acts are explicitly told that they MUST include any and all relevant content warning in the information they upload.

Again: the information is submitted by THE ACTS THEMSELVES (or their team); the Edfringe.com web staff simply copy and paste it into the live website.

On a typical EdFringe visit you see perhaps half a dozen, perhaps as many as 10 shows a day. It's completely ludicrous to expect people to diligently painstakingly research that number of shows (and painstakingly watch every youtube video) just in case an act has deliberately lied (by omission) in the listing page they submitted.

People have clearly never been to Edinburgh before.

AlexandriasWindmill · 15/08/2022 18:47

The Pleasance didn't mention any complaints about indecent exposure or nudity when they contacted JS to tell him his show was cancelled.

The Fringe has never once run a programme where every show is for every person. That's anathema to its reason d'etre. It's also why lots of locals decamp during the Fringe rather than going to see stuff (the money from renting out apartments helps too).

All the large comedy venues are being pressured to cancel comedians and shows. But the others are resisting so far. This isn't just about JS. It's much bigger than one person and one show. That's why comedians are being so vocal about it.

BoredofthisCrap7 · 15/08/2022 18:48

Nope.
What's her name?
I've seen countless other threads on as many forums saying it was NOT about the nudity, that STAFF members were the ones to complain.
Why is your information better than theirs?
Where did other audience members confirm it?
Press coverage may have included this detail, it doesn't mean its true and that they have not all just jumped on and re-reported the original story.

JS does not deny exposing his penis, but he does not say he "shoved it" in anyone's literal face.
Not sure what "shoving his naked penis in his thread" means?

balalake · 15/08/2022 18:50

I was very surprised that Jerry Sadowitz was even booked to perform there in the first place.

JemimaPuddlegoose · 15/08/2022 18:51

The Pleasance didn't mention any complaints about indecent exposure or nudity when they contacted JS to tell him his show was cancelled.

Every single press report has mentioned the exposed penis as (one of) the reasons the show was cancelled.

Audience members are directly quoted in several of these press articles.

JS' own statement confirms that he exposed his penis.

Floisme · 15/08/2022 18:54

No I've not been before but, given the reputation the Fringe has for edginess and how much the whole shebang costs, hell yes, I'd do as much research as I could and, if I didn't, I think that would be on me.

If the issue is that venue didn't provide sufficient information to anyone who did do some research - it's not clear to me whether they did or not - then yes, that's a fault and I think they should have rectified it and offered a refund to anyone who had bought a ticket unawares. I don't see it as a reason to cancel the show.

BoredofthisCrap7 · 15/08/2022 18:55

Oh, and I'm from Edinburgh and live there.

You don't have the monopoly on how the Fringe works.

Sorry Floisme, that was in response to

Bouledeneige · 15/08/2022 19:00

JemimaPuddlegoose Jerry Sadowitz is famous for being the most extreme comedian on the circuit (until that arse Frankie Boyle came along) and he's known for getting his dick out. Edinburgh fringe has always has been the sort of place performers get their dicks out. I remember a show I went to at the fringe in 1984 where a male performer danced to a whole Jane Fonda workout song only wearing leg warmers and another in 1986 when I was performing there where three of the guys were on stage with their dicks out. There was a famous street performer Chris Lyman who used to stick a firework up his bum and set fire to it. He was often up at Edinburgh. That is what the fringe was all about.
Its not supposed to be the West End.

As I say I don't like Jerry Sadowitz and wouldn't choose to go and see him. But the Pleasance knew exactly who they were booking so it's on them.

Floisme · 15/08/2022 19:03

No worries Bored - I hadn't read it that way, I was just exasperated with myself for making two almost identical posts!

MaChienEstUnDick · 15/08/2022 19:23

Scianel · 15/08/2022 17:54

But what about staff? They dont get a choice in what they hear. Should you have to listen to Frankie Boyle night after night whilst on minimum wage? That is trickier

It's not tricky at all. If you are a vegan you can't expect to go and work in an abbatoir and demand that they cease slaughtering animals. If you're scared of heights you can't work as a rigger and insist on not going above the ground. If you're short, plain and dumpy you can't insist that an agency hires you as a model (although some people seem to find even that a problem now). If you have a medical condition that doesn't allow you to drive, you can't work as a truck driver.
And so on. Where did this idea come from that anyone is entitled to any job and that the company must make the necessary adjustments? It doesn't work like that.

No-one has to work in the Pleasance, or indeed the Edinburgh Festival.

No-one has to work 12 hour + shifts on their feet for minimum wage in a city where accommodation costs are ££££ for three weeks in August.

It is killing me that this is what Giles and Camilla are making a stand about, when there are so, so, so many ways that their labour is being exploited and their poorer counterparts are being excluded. Luxury beliefs indeed.

Scianel · 15/08/2022 19:29

JemimaPuddlegoose you're honestly calling anyone who disagrees with you an MRA?

I live in Scotland, I've attended shows at the fringe for over 20 years and I've seen JS at the Citizens theatre in Glasgow. Him getting his knob out is hardly new.

So why the great offense now?
