Ash Sarkhar should never be invited to speak on tv after this tweet?

I was horrified enough earlier to read this tweet, but to see her blind ignorant responses AIBU to think she should never be allowed on tv again? Her judgement today is eye-wateringly offensive...

She's an utter fool with nothing of value to say. No idea why she is asked for her opinion on anything.

I’m guessing that despite self identifying as a communist she has the “right” connections. Media and entertainment basically run on nepotism, or so I hear.

Bibbetyboo · 13/08/2022 18:22

I’ve read the first page of comments on this thread but I honestly could do with someone explaining to me what is so bad about the tweet? What am I missing please?

Expectingfirstbaby · 13/08/2022 18:34

I like her takes on most things, although we don't agree on everything. Have to admit to being a little miffed at this tweet, but offended? No.

As for people saying she has nothing intelligent to say - how does that make her any different to any number of people in positions of actual power in this country? Bojo to name just one. When he's not hiding in a fridge what is he doing or saying of any use? And as for socialism only being good for the elite - have you looked around at the way things are here now? 🤣 Not sure the capitalist dream is doing much for anyone except the ever expanding riches of the 0.1%

ApplesandBunions · 13/08/2022 18:35

TBF to Ash I don't think she's ever claimed to be in the Communist Party. I don't think she sees herself as that kind of commie. She's not one for applying structural analysis to sex, whereas the more old school ones have an inconvenient insistence on it.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/08/2022 18:45

She's never grown up, imo. Given a platform when she was too young and her views and attitudes have stayed in a teenage student common-room mode.

catgirl1976 · 13/08/2022 18:46

She’s thick as mince and tone deaf.

David Baddiel says it better than I could, I think it was a general comment not aimed at anyone in particular.

It’s appalling what has happened to Salman Rushdie. It’s also appalling that there are people who will think he brought it on himself or somehow deserved it.

I can also hear in some responses, or indeed silences, an uncertainty about which “side” Rushdie and the threats against him figures on. Fuck that. Do not process this incident in terms of what it might mean vis a vis your allegiance identity. It is terrible.

I guess gender identity ideology is part of Ash’s agenda and she identifies as an “ally”. To connect parents protesting against adult sexual entertainment being performed to children with something so serious as a man being threatened with execution for the past 30 years or so and someone almost/possibly succeeding is at the very least insensitive. One might wonder how she perceives those two things as being related.

LizzieSiddal · 13/08/2022 18:48

it doesn’t make her any difference, however I expect the BBC to chose people who have intelligent comments and ideas on their debating programmes. There are many intelligent women out there!

LizzieSiddal · 13/08/2022 18:49

indeed and her comment shows her lack of intelligence, insight and historical knowledge.

Bibbetyboo · 13/08/2022 18:58

@PomegranateOfPersephone thank you. I didn’t appreciate that’s what she was talking about about and understood/ assumed she was talking about right wing terrorists. I have kind of ignored/ not really taken much notice of the drag queen/ parents protests thing tbh. Seemed like obvious culture wars nonsense.

appreciate the straightforward explanation!

Was this a Baddiel quote too?

@BoreOfWhabylon

no apologies for the lack of clarity, that last paragraph was mine.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 13/08/2022 19:05

I don’t see that David Baddiel was aiming his comment at Ash or any other particular person, I think it was a general comment about how some people are trying to see how the attack on Salman Rushdie fits into their position on various polarised topics before saying anything about it.

LuluBlakey1 · 13/08/2022 19:07

She is thicker than mince and should be banned from any media where others sees or hear her views.

I'm currently politically homeless (thanks Nicola) and during my Google search of who I could vote for in the last local elections, I'm pretty sure the Communist Party came across as GC.

They are!

I assume she's think more along the lines of this than a few parents quietly protesting.

It was a bloody stupid and insensitive thing to tweet, but I don't think she's comparing Rushdie's stabbing to parents not being happy about drag queens reading library books to kids.

vincettenoir · 13/08/2022 19:34

I agree that the tweet was deliberately provocative. But I don’t think she’s equating the 2 types of ‘violence’ as some have suggested. Just highlighting the lack of tolerance in the US.

She’s an academic and lecturer as well as a tv personality and political activist. I think it’s a bit disingenuous to say she’s not intelligent. Plenty of people don’t agree with her views. But that doesn’t undermine her intelligence. She’s hugely articulate and knowledgeable whether you like her or not.

BreadInCaptivity · 13/08/2022 19:36

Binglebong · 13/08/2022 14:59

I don't want her cancelled, I don't want anyone to be. Would quite like that tweet to be brought up Every. Single. Time though.

This...

Hawkins001 · 13/08/2022 19:37

Surely it's better as part of democracy to debate and prove her perspectives incorrect so that hopefully they may rethink their perspectives and views ?

Oh come off it. She was trying to minimise the horror of a murderous attack. She is intelligent I agree. That leads to her ability to use language in an intellectually bamboozling way.
She's often on Jeremy Vine where she's pitted against a right winger like Ann Widdicome. It's all theatre

Wouldloveanother · 13/08/2022 19:45

She’s just a down-with-the-kids, slightly cringey poser. It says a lot that she seems to be OJ’s only female friend (I guess he can’t ladzladzladz when she’s there). She reminds me of one of those sixth formers who did a summer holiday stint ‘building a school in India’ and now think they know the secret to life.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 13/08/2022 15:24

She's part of a group of ageing millennials who are starting to realise that the new generation is fast coming up behind them and making them irrelevant. The other's being people like Owen Jones, Laurie Penny, Jameela Jamal, and possibly Jack Monroe. All of them have written/performed one or two interesting pieces that deserved credit, but years ago would have given them their 15 minutes of fame then retreated into obscurity but an online presence has kept them going far longer than they should have and basically turned them into revealed the fact they are nob heads.

How very well put!
