Going to the supermarket straight from Parkrun

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 13/08/2022 11:18

I started doing parkrun last year, for most of the year I have been dashing straight home to shower quickly before taking DD to an activity and doing my weekly shop while she's there, but she has stopped the activity now so I don't need to rush. I do still need to get the shopping done on Saturday mornings though, and the start/finish point of the parkrun is across the road from the supermarket car park. It makes sense to me to go straight to the supermarket after my run but I feel a bit self conscious going round the shop while I'm sweaty. I do see others doing the same thing so at least I'm not the only one!

Is this OK? Or gross?

Those who care probably don't exercise.

oopsfellover · 13/08/2022 22:59

Wouldn't give it a second thought. I go to the supermarket straight from the gym, and I bet I'm sweatier than you!

Leftbutcameback · 15/08/2022 22:11

I definitely don't make good food decisions post exercise! I'm always very tempted by the pastries (almond croissant or chocolate twist)

notnownorma · 15/08/2022 22:17

I have less than zero interest in what fellow shoppers are wearing and would not notice if they were sweaty (or, in the current climate, sweatier). I'm too busy getting my stuff and then getting out (don't enjoy shopping).
If it's convenient for you, crack on.

PowerPack · 15/08/2022 22:17

I do it all the time. I also quite often go for a pub lunch with other runners straight after a race and I didn't get home from my long run with friends yesterday morning until nearly 6pm because we'd been "socialising" all day.

If I know I'll be out for a while I do have a shower before the run though, which seems a bit daft, but I don't think a clean sweaty body smells in the way yesterday's shower sweat smells iyswim

PowerPack · 15/08/2022 22:21

Mind you, I've also been known to change into a dry tshirt in the car park, so no standards here. I wouldn't go I PJs though 😆

Hop27 · 15/08/2022 22:24

I train every Saturday morning in a very hot climate. All our technical gear is washed in anti-bacterial/anti-fungal wash, so doesn't have that stale smell. (Complete game changer) I shower before training. I sometimes stick a clean top in the car to chuck on after or just train in a crop top and tights, if I don't want to be cold running errands after. Make life easy for yourself OP, honestly no one cares!

The3Ls · 15/08/2022 22:25

Baby wipes under arms reapply deodorant change t-shirt if can be bothered. You ll smell fine until get home. Especially if shower night before as clean sweat takes a little while to set and smell

Purpleberet · 15/08/2022 22:30

I don’t get very sweaty from a parkrun so I wouldn’t think anything of it. For a lot of people it’s a pretty easy short run and I don’t think they’d be that smelly.
i remember when I was way more unfit and did my first 10k I was baffled that a fair few people went straight to a to get food with family/friends and sat there in restaurants wearing their running gear and their medals?!

ScampiFlies · 15/08/2022 22:35

Not exactly the same but I go straight after work sometimes. I'm a housekeeper in a non air-conditioned very busy hotel.
I feel gross but needs must, I just don't hang around long by anyone.

Ooh what brand do you use? I have to wash ours on 90°C to get the smell out, not very environmentally friendly - a product would be loads better if it can be washed on cooler settings.

It’s fine, I did when I wasn’t a lazy overheated lard arse

KatherineJaneway · 16/08/2022 06:34

I shop on my way home from the gym. Hoodie on and I'm all set.

Fine. No man working a sweating manual labour job would even ask himself this.

I'm inclined to think no man would ask himself this full stop. I find threads like this a bit sad in that women are worrying about being judged for doing something that really isn't a big deal... and I'm pleased the majority of responses agree it's fine.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/08/2022 07:16

Yes, but don't 'loop' into the supermarket during your run, and certainly don't carry any scissors.

Queenoftheashes · 16/08/2022 07:17

No man would ask himself this. My boyfriend and his friends pal did the Paris marathon and we all got straight on the Eurostar after along with many other runners. We did Santa run and then went for breakfast still in our Santa suits and then to view a flat we were buying. I met him in the pub after work the other day after he’d cycled 40 mins. They regularly stop for cake and coffee on all-day bike rides. I always go to Waitrose after a gym class before going home to shower. No one cares and if they do they certainly don’t say anything. Crack on.

Sallyh87 · 16/08/2022 08:12

I don’t notice anyone in the supermarket, unless they get in my way and I find it annoying 😀

good for you doing park run!

I've read the thread wondering why this even a question. Is it something that people even consider? Who apart from the Victorian Laydee poster who thinks it's gross would go home , get ready then go right back to where they started? That's mad surely

Leftbutcameback · 16/08/2022 11:17

@KvotheTheBloodless does the hot wash work well? I struggle with lycra etc retaining that sweaty smell and the washing instructions all say 30 degrees. I do use antibac laundry stuff as well.

QueenOfWeeds · 16/08/2022 11:22

Haven’t RTFT but I’m now imaging a Supermarket Sweep style extension to Park Run.

OP, I think it’s fine unless your Park Run is a particularly muddy one and you’re traipsing mud everywhere.

QueenOfWeeds · 16/08/2022 11:22

*imagining, obviously

PhatPaws · 16/08/2022 11:24

Sweat only smells of it's old. I highly doubt you would sweat straight after anyway people can see you've just done the run.

Hop27 · 17/08/2022 14:26

For really smelly stuff (ref. Football kit) soak your gear first then wash.
