Going to the supermarket straight from Parkrun

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 13/08/2022 11:18

I started doing parkrun last year, for most of the year I have been dashing straight home to shower quickly before taking DD to an activity and doing my weekly shop while she's there, but she has stopped the activity now so I don't need to rush. I do still need to get the shopping done on Saturday mornings though, and the start/finish point of the parkrun is across the road from the supermarket car park. It makes sense to me to go straight to the supermarket after my run but I feel a bit self conscious going round the shop while I'm sweaty. I do see others doing the same thing so at least I'm not the only one!

Is this OK? Or gross?

I do 2 exercise classes on a Friday and then go to Tesco as its practically across the road from the sports centre. Half the class seems to do the same so we must stink out the place Grin.

MissVantaBlack · 13/08/2022 12:45

I think it's fine! There's nothing wrong or harmful about a bit of fresh sweat.

I do hate it when I see HCPs in uniform in supermarkets though, clearly having come straight from a shift. I have huge respect for HCPs and the work that they do, but please, guys, change out of your uniform before you go food shopping!

SkirridHill · 13/08/2022 12:46

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest! Obviously you'd be wearing running gear/gym stuff so it would be obvious why you were sweaty. When I'm having a grungy day and need to go to the shop I stick my gym clothes on to give me an excuse for looking a bit wild. 😅

WhatIsThisPlease · 13/08/2022 12:50

I don't do Parkruns but I do run. And I do go to the supermarket straight afterwards. Nobody cares.

Hophop26 · 13/08/2022 12:51

No one will notice, it’s fine

Leftbutcameback · 13/08/2022 12:54

I sometimes pop in on the way back from the stables. I try and make it just a quick visit but I'm definitely a bit sweaty. But otherwise I'd have to drive all the way back over and I pass the supermarket on the way home so it seems daft not to. I do use the self checkouts and try and use the one on the end!

Leftbutcameback · 13/08/2022 12:56

@QuestionableMouse I used to be a checkout girl and your post reminded me we used to get the fishmongers in, wearing their white coats and wellies. Quite a distinctive smell!

ClasslessLady · 13/08/2022 11:34

Sorry, but I do think it is gross though I wouldn't stare or make you feel shit about it.
Ideally you'd do your shopping prior or at a different time but I know sometimes it doesn't work that way.
I'm also the type who wouldn't go out in PJs and would think it's inappropriate to wear slippers and PJs in supermarkets so...

Don't be daft

People walking there to get shopping are also going to be sweaty. Parkrun is only 3 miles!!! Nobody will be that 'gross'

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/08/2022 13:13

I wouldn't think twice 🤷🏻‍♀️

PortalooSunset · 13/08/2022 13:14

Dh does this. He barely breaks a sweat at parkrun though!
I wouldn't do it because when I've finished I look like a soggy beetroot 🥵

Wallywobbles · 13/08/2022 14:06

If you are using a car then this is a good example of things people need to stop doing. Don't go out twice do everything possible in one trip.

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2022 14:09

Absolutely fine.

And if you're really sweaty (thinking of current temperatures!) there an easy solution to take a microfibre towel to dry it off and can even change t shirt if wearing a sports bra or similar.

But I wouldn't care if I saw you.

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2022 14:10

SavingsThreads · 13/08/2022 11:38

I absolutley fine unless you're dripping on the food Wink

Fwiw research shows you make better food choices if you shop after exercise. Even if you just shop in exercise gear it helps!

Really?

I may try and adopt this.

Nothing else has worked for far 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

20viona · 13/08/2022 14:11

No one cares I would 100% do it to save myself time in the long run.

eastegg · 13/08/2022 14:12

LammasEve · 13/08/2022 11:47

I go shopping after running all the time, I do try to make sure I don't look like I'm about to die of exhaustion before I go in but otherwise, who cares what people think? I do trail running so I'm just as likely to be muddy as well as sweaty.

I would be more annoyed by someone who smells like they've bathed in perfume than someone who has just been exercising, I find strong artificial scents far more offensive.

Completely agree about artificial scents.

eastegg · 13/08/2022 14:15

Absolutely nothing wrong at all OP. I would definitely do this and I see others doing it all the time.

As for the PP who said they wouldn’t do it and they also wouldn’t go in pjs or slippers, what a silly remark. I wouldn’t dream of going in pjs or slippers either. There’s just no correlation between the two.

Ilovefriday · 13/08/2022 14:39

What about doing a click and collect order on line and then picking it up after parkrun? Ours is in a similar location and I often pop in for a few bits, mainly because you can't use the supermarket car park unless you are a customer.

sarahc336 · 13/08/2022 14:47

Do it op!!!! No need to be embarrassed that you've been out running x

ImWell · 13/08/2022 15:42

I’m interested now in the question of whether going straight from a run affects your buying habits.

I know that going while hungry is a bad idea for me, as I’ll end up buying some crap, but I wonder if I’ll make better decisions than normal if I’ve just exercised hard. There’s a risk that I’ll think that I “deserve” a fatty, sugary treat.

Funkyslippers · 13/08/2022 15:44

I've been to the shops straight after running before. It's fine and you tend to make healthier food choices top 😊

MrsDThomas · 13/08/2022 16:00

Its after a run. Does it matter?

i often go to the supermarket after running. I do much more than a park run and no one told me its gross.

there’s a lot of overthinking on this site🙄

TheBikiniExpert · 13/08/2022 16:05

I think it depends what state you're in. I'm a sweaty mess after a 5km run so no. Others barely break a sweat.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 13/08/2022 17:20

Phew, glad to see it is generally socially acceptable. I do tend to overthink things like this so thought I'd check. Although I was pretty sweaty today so a towel to hand is probably a good idea!

OP posts:
LetsPlayShadowlands · 13/08/2022 22:47

I probably sweat just as much just from walking to the supermarket 😄

Bobshhh · 13/08/2022 22:52

This is such a weird view.

I ran a 6k this evening and had to pick up food for dinner. I was running literally past the door of a supermarket, why on earth would I go home first get showered and changed and come out again?

Unless you're rolling around naked in the fresh produce, I think it's probably fine.
