Going to the supermarket straight from Parkrun

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 13/08/2022 11:18

I started doing parkrun last year, for most of the year I have been dashing straight home to shower quickly before taking DD to an activity and doing my weekly shop while she's there, but she has stopped the activity now so I don't need to rush. I do still need to get the shopping done on Saturday mornings though, and the start/finish point of the parkrun is across the road from the supermarket car park. It makes sense to me to go straight to the supermarket after my run but I feel a bit self conscious going round the shop while I'm sweaty. I do see others doing the same thing so at least I'm not the only one!

Is this OK? Or gross?

Our local Morrisons usually has plenty of parkrunners doing their big shop at 10am.

Benjispruce4 · 13/08/2022 11:49

If you drive there then take some deodorant and a towel for a quick freshen up before you go in

Sheepreallylikerichteabiscuits · 13/08/2022 11:50

Completely normal and (if using the car) far more environmentally friendly, saves fuel money and saves time

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 13/08/2022 11:51

I would not even notice. Who on earth would get judgey on a busy woman getting the shopping in.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/08/2022 11:51

I think it's fine - your sweat hasn't had time to start smelling if you go there directly, and the cold supermarket will chill you down nicely in this weather.

Coughee · 13/08/2022 11:44

I usually do this but I had to draw the line the other night after a VERY sweaty gym session where I was literally dripping sweat. The thought of dripping sweat on the produce and floor of the supermarket is grim and not really fair on the staff and customers

Yes, at the moment I’m probably OK but DH would be soaked so he’s not want to go shopping like that.

There’s a big difference between shopping after having cooled down and going in looking like you just stepped out of a shower.

@ClasslessLady those 2 things are in no way comparable. I will pop in to the supermarket on the way home from a gym session but that doesn't mean I'm going to start wandering around Tesco in my pj's. Leggings that you've worn for an hour are not the same as pj's you may have worn for several nights.

OP it is absolutely fine. Fresh sweat doesn't smell as the bacteria that causes the smell hasn't had chance yet. Just pop a hand towel into the car so you wipe your hands and face (if that would make you feel more comfortable) then get on with your day.

WishDragon · 13/08/2022 11:58

I used to be part of a running group and everyone went to the supermarket afterwards (me included). Never even considered it.

I absolutley fine unless you're dripping on the food Wink

Fwiw research shows you make better food choices if you shop after exercise. Even if you just shop in exercise gear it helps!

Oh god, not for me. I used to do my shop after a run but I’d have to have a chocolate croissant and an orange juice first. Don’t even talk to me about the post-swimming hunger pangs!

StanleyBostitch · 13/08/2022 12:04

I think it's fine. But people wander around my local shops in PJs and slippers, and no one batts and eyelid, so maybe my standards are low! (Seriously, it's totally ok, so it!),

DrManhattan · 13/08/2022 12:07

Not gross but this guy used to get on the very packed train at 8 a.m. After he had been for a run and he didn't seem to mind being squashed up to people covered in sweat.

QuestionableMouse · 13/08/2022 12:08

liveforsummer · 13/08/2022 11:44

I might not be the best one to ask though as I've been known to go shopping on the way back from the stables - that's a lot dirtier and smellier than a bit of fresh sweat 😆

Same!

My BIL works in a wet fish shop and he properly stinks at times. Doesn't stop him from nipping into the supermarket though.

SquirrelFan · 13/08/2022 12:08

Maybe just washing your hands and face, and keeping a more covering t-shirt or jumper in the car for the purpose will make you feel more comfortable. No one will really notice if you're a bit sweaty.

Justcallmebebes · 13/08/2022 12:19

I go straight from gym to supermarket all the time. Never thought anything of it

WithIcePlease · 13/08/2022 12:26

My gym is next door to a lidl and 100m from an Aldi
No way would I go back home and drive again
May put a less revealing t shirt on top of gym kit if I can be bothered but usually not

WaveyHair · 13/08/2022 12:32

See people in supermarkets after runs, gyms sessions, in horse riding kit, cycling clothes etc not a problem. Once you notice it you will see lots of people do this.

Might want to take a fleece though to keep warm.

Soproudoflionesses · 13/08/2022 12:34

Yep l do this every week

gatehouseoffleet · 13/08/2022 12:34

Nobody cares OP.

The stinky ones are the men who refuse to wear deodorant and then takes their tops off as well, so they stink of BO and hot meat. Yuck.

If my top was completely sweaty I might take it off and put on a different one before I go into the shop, but I wouldn't be worried about the rest of me.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/08/2022 12:36

We come back from the gym via the supermarket every time - we've got to walk past the doors whether we go in or not, so it would be stupid to waste extra time in going home, showering, changing and then coming back out again.

I think that I've only encountered one person at the gym who clearly hadn't showered in the last 24 hours, though. It's just not something people do - the prospect of itching and chafing would be very high. Running's already a high risk activity for sweat and friction causing it, why make it even more likely?

Furrydogmum · 13/08/2022 12:38

My DH often pops to the shop on the way home from the gym, he takes a clean t shirt to put on after his workout.

ParkrunWithDog · 13/08/2022 12:38

Entirely normal Saturday morning. Parkrun, breakfast, pick any shopping for dinner, home.

I do this too!

I even sometimes go after a full day of dog-walking (my job), a riding lesson and a trip to the stables to muck out and feed a horse I care for 😂

RealBecca · 13/08/2022 12:39

Fine. No man working a sweating manual labour job would even ask himself this.

miserablecat · 13/08/2022 12:42

I don't often go to the supermarket after parkrun but I frequently do after running training because the supermarket is convenient for the way home. Ive never given it a thought, or wondered if people might be put off. It would seem a waste of time, effort and fuel to make a separate journey when i'm literally passing.

LampLighter414 · 13/08/2022 12:43

I do this but straight after a gym weights session (I can’t stand cardio). Did it this morning in fact. Aldi is next door to the gym. No problem at all
