Is just me or does it just feel like the bloody end of the world at the moment..

ridiculous heat
water shortages
food shortages
Collapsing government
cost of living
energy prices
impending recession
staff shortgages
risk of fires

We are only just getting over a world wide pandemic- i haven't forgotten that yet....

If I didn't have kids then I would be looking for the nearest tall building.

The government isn't collapsing. There's a change of leader, so no likelihood of anarchy yet. I've seen no food shortages at all, so some supermarkets obviously manage to stock up successfully.

That's quite an optimistic view. The government is split in two. Incapable of making basic decisions, zombie government.

orbitalcrisis · 12/08/2022 16:29

Brexit and greed are breaking the country, global warming and greed are breaking the world.

crochetmonkey74 · 12/08/2022 16:29

Don't agree , what I think we have is a media determined to terrifying people.
No food shortages here, nor water rationing as the Mail have put on their front page.
Recession yes, terrible govt yes but not a collapsing one. Get rid of social media, choose your news sources carefully and read sparingly. Not intending to be patronising, it's just something that has helped me as I was in a state of anxiety constantly.

Hesperatum · 12/08/2022 16:30

Brexit and our appalling government are to blame for most of it. The fact that neither of the battling contenders for No.10 has referred to the climate crisis doesn’t portend well. Equally alarming is the fact that some people still believe the Tories are doing a good job. Wake up people.

Lifeomars · 12/08/2022 16:31

I wake every morning with a sense of lurking dread which taints much of my day. I am dreading winter, I have just retired and thought I would be able to manage. Not now, it will simply be impossible to have any sort of a life, just an existence and what is the point of that? I feel very sorry for young families, a good friend of mine has a 13 month old and is worried sick about money, one of my nieces bought a flat last year and is panicking about paying her bills. I have never known things to be so bad, scarily bad with more bad news every day

I agree with you, the media,as usual are trying their best to whip up hysteria. They have alot to answer for. We have to just get on with it.

Lifeomars · 12/08/2022 16:34

so true, why do people vote for them? They only care about themselves and making the rich richer. They would be quite happy for most of us to perish just need enought of us plebs to survive to keep things ticking over for them

AlviarinAesSedai · 12/08/2022 16:38

It is rubbish, but not every where has water shortages. I’m in north east and we have enough and it’s due to rain most of next week.
But I don’t worry about what I can’t control. I
also don’t vote Tory.

picklemewalnuts · 12/08/2022 16:40

Nice post @EmmaH2022 . Good to know there are sensitive people about. Flowers

Redhair1 · 12/08/2022 16:43

I don't think you're being unreasonable.

In my local area I've notices the shelves in many supermarkets bare (not sure if it's staffing issues or issues to do with the ports)

The weather is crazy hot, it feels like everything is barren and dying. I saw on sky news there was a fire-tornado in LA. That's some apocalyptic sh!t right there! And I think with global warming there's no coming back from it, we're too late.

Then the pandemic, the war in the Ukraine (yes I know there are conflicts in other areas long standing and probably always will be), the cost of living, the energy prices and this is only the main things I'm aware of living in the UK. It is starting to feel like the end is nigh!

PlentyMorePebbles · 12/08/2022 16:46

OP it’s just a bit hot that’s all. Yes the other issues aren’t going away any time soon but it’s due to rain next week - hang in there.

dreamingofsun · 12/08/2022 16:48

has anyone mentioned the 80's when interest rates were 15% and house prices dropped by 25% so people had negative equity/lost their houses?

GettingStuffed · 12/08/2022 13:09

DH went to Waitrose yesterday and they were clearing out chilled food at stupid prices.

I went to a large M and S Simply Food yesterday and it was very well stocked indeed. I was looking for fruit and salads no way am I cooking in this heat and thinking everyone else would be doing the same.
But no stock problems were apparent.
I also had a large delivery from 'Trose this week -- no subs at all apart from the champagne which was on special.
I am painfully aware this sounds like a parody.

Fuck me I’ve just read there won’t be any Brussels sprouts at Christmas now.

I’ve changed my mind - it’s definitely the bloody end times. I can’t live a life without sprouts.

<downs cyanide pill>

Just buy some frozen ones in September.

antelopevalley · 12/08/2022 16:48

People are taking food shortages literally. There is enough food. But there is far less choice of food than there used to be.

Frozen sprouts are horrible.

Thisisconfusing · 12/08/2022 16:50

The pandemic still isn’t over . Sadly . There is still quite a few people dying every week and our most vulnerable have been thrown under a bus today - the immunocompromised have just been told that the U.K. will not be buying a drug that 34 other countries have brought . France & USA is moving onto its second dose already ( its given every 6th months ) . The drug gives the immunocompromised the same freedoms the rest of us enjoy being vaccinated . I’m really sickened that we can’t do this. It could be anyone of us in the near future . And many vulnerable are struggling to access the antivirals & bizarrely most asthmatics have been booted from the Covid booster in autumn - despite having chronic lung disease . So when they said the vulnerable will be protected they didn’t mean it. And they have all the other stuff to contend with to . Can you tell I’m furious and disgusted by this ...!! And fed up with everything .

MountVesuvius · 12/08/2022 16:50

It’s the bloody media!! They are whipping the country into a frenzy of anxiety for clicks.

QuebecBagnet · 12/08/2022 16:51

Why are people supposedly panic buying water? I know the odd village has got no water, but then don’t the water companies provide bottled water? Are we expecting wide spread, long term issues of no water coming out the taps?

Maireas · 12/08/2022 16:51

dreamingofsun · 12/08/2022 16:48

Nope, but I remember it well

People are taking food shortages literally. There is enough food. But there is far less choice of food than there used to be.

Some of the cheapest foods aren't available. A lot of my 'favourites' on the tesco website no longer exist. The suggested subs are far more expensive.

Now that's not a significant problem for me. I'm thrifty rather than hard up.

I can imagine it being terrifying if you are struggling already. Add in the forecast fuel bills, the price of petrol, the problems accessing health care the war in Ukraine and global warming and quite honestly I think people are pretty calm.

antelopevalley · 12/08/2022 16:49

Frozen sprouts are horrible.

Butter and bacon make them better

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 12/08/2022 16:56

Stop falling victim to scare stories in the media.

There is a 'hosepipe ban' not a water shortage.
The government hasn't collapsed.
Yes, energy prices are going up, so work out ways to use less. Might also help with global warming.

And stop fuelling the drama.

Travelledtheworld · 12/08/2022 16:58

Wait until the sea levels actually do rise significantly enough for salt water to inundate a significant proportion of our small island.

motherofgodhaudyerwheesht · 12/08/2022 17:03

We have spent the first three years of our long awaited retirement enduring the fall out from Brexit, Trump , covid lockdown and war. Most of our plans have been shelved and our finances are very much more insecure in these uncertain times. In honesty I dont think we will live long enough for a lot of the global issues to improve e.g. political unrest, climate change, basic standard of living for the most in need. I do hope we will see a change of government though, and after a lifetime of paying our taxes, am frankly praying the NHS is there for us

.I know many are far worse off and for many, a very basic and miserable existence /subsistence is here or in sight. While I feel sadness and disappointment of the near future, and that this worry is legitimate, I also understand that this pales in comparison to the situation for many, which frankly adds guilt to the equation.

I do think the really execrable standards and manipulation of mainstream media make all the tawdry and selective political coverage and global perceptions even worse.

So yes, feeling very worried, and anxious, and let down where the issues have been of out own making i.e. the UK voted for it (Brexit, Tories). For now I am drinking gin and enjoying my garden and contributing what I can to food banks and hoping 'this too will pass'. And I am exactly the safely middle class, higher income voter that is becoming extremely politically active to get rid of this inhumane, corrupt government. I really hope I am not alone.
