Feels like the apocalypse

housinghero · 12/08/2022 11:55

Is just me or does it just feel like the bloody end of the world at the moment..

ridiculous heat
water shortages
food shortages
Collapsing government
cost of living
energy prices
impending recession
staff shortgages
risk of fires

We are only just getting over a world wide pandemic- i haven't forgotten that yet....

If I didn't have kids then I would be looking for the nearest tall building.

Oh and I remember the Poll Tax riots...
I'm going pillaging in Waitrose

Ah, while you're there pick me up some ciabatta rolls, I forgot those yesterday.
Cheers 😊

I’m sat in the garden drinking pimms, smoking the skunk I confiscated from my teenager and reading the Book of Revelation.
I’m quite exited about it tbh.

That's the attitude!😁

sure you don't want some focaccia and some chateaubriand while I am going...
I might use your Range Rover to ram raid the doors..

You’re all obviously far too young to remember the 3 day week! There’s something to smile about.

And the 4 hours on, 4 hours off for electricity for weeks on end. Grave diggers strike, draymen on strike so no beer in the summer of 1976, rubbish piling up a the binmen were on strike and much more. Interest rates through the roof and also in the late 80's. Thinking back it was much worse then

watcherintherye · 12/08/2022 12:19

Yes...it does feel a bit end of days. I'm watching the news about Trump's alleged nuclear secrets and think that things could get almost civil war crazy over there if he goes to prison.

Is it likely that he’ll go to prison? I’m more worried about him standing again for President, and the distinct possibility if he did, that he would be re-elected. Now that would be end of days Shock

Deguster · 12/08/2022 12:20

@housinghero me too! We could only afford paraffin heaters and a black and white telly. My bedroom window would freeze on the inside during Winter. At least we have better tech and entertainment this time around.

I do think there’s an element of over-entitlement amongst the doom-mongers (I don’t mean you OP). Take the 1980’s… Mortgage interest was 15%, the government did nothing, homes were repossessed all over. Unemployment was 3 million (?) Chernobyl, nuclear arms, riots, strikes, war in Europe - all that happened in the 80’s and nobody talked about the end of days. My mum trotted off to Greenham Common while I swotted up on Protect and Survive and read When the Wind Blows for light relief!

I know I’m being flippant, but it doesn’t feel like that (yet).

Ilovesriracha · 12/08/2022 12:22

If everyone starts looting I am definitely going to Waitrose.
That's if I can afford the petrol for a 52 mile round trip 😊

Deguster · 12/08/2022 12:22

Sorry, Balkans war was actually 1991. It all blends into one when you get to my great age!

Maireas · 12/08/2022 12:23

I agree with you, @mrstreacle and @deguster
I remember all those things. High inflation and mortgage rates, power cuts, strikes - all with no Netflix or Apple TV 😉!

Maireas · 12/08/2022 12:25

Oh please! The keys are next to the chaise longue in the library x

housinghero · 12/08/2022 12:28

Anyway - regardless of the past- and although that's relevant - the world is very different.

My wording was meant flippantly but it does feel like we are only just getting up after covid (which hasn't gone) and the world just feels a little crazy .

I have a big grip but in serious it is hard not to be a bit fed up know and again

If its the apocalypse it's very fucking boring

LovinglifeAF · 12/08/2022 12:33

There are lots of threads on this and a lot of doom mongering

shit times happen. Always have, always will. This is just our turn.

Maireas · 12/08/2022 12:34

Sure it's easy to be fed up. Also to wonder why we've been cursed with this government and why on earth Putin hasn't been toppled. Still. As long as Waitrose is still selling my favourite ciabattas 👍

LovinglifeAF · 12/08/2022 12:35

And turn off the news. You can’t change any of it, you’ll drive yourself mad worrying about it. I’ve always been a newshound but had to pare it right back during Covid as I was becoming a basket case.

Bringon2023 · 12/08/2022 12:36

I suffer from anxiety and always catastrophise everything but even I don't think it's that bad! There are no food shortages, other than odd gaps on shelves. Yes there's a recession coming but there have been recessions before and survived. It's going to be a tough few years but we wil get through it. The only long term problem is climate change which I can only see getting worse.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/08/2022 12:36

There better not be an apocalypse, I've just had my bathroom re-done Smile

Featuredcreature · 12/08/2022 12:37

Tbh though I think it's going to get very much worse. This winter I will not be putting on my heating at all, food shortages will probably be a thing in the near future. The smug "I'm alright" people will get a sharp shock I reckon.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/08/2022 12:38

I'm off to Waitrose

LovinglifeAF · 12/08/2022 12:38

RelationshipOrNot · 12/08/2022 12:10

I notice the people being dismissive haven't mentioned the energy prices or rising food prices. I am so scared about what it's going to be like in winter for elderly people, people on low incomes, anyone already struggling. "I'm alright Jack" is such a cruel attitude to have.

It’s less that it’s cruel than I have enough to be getting on with in my own life to be fretting about random people I don’t know. It was the same with Covid. It’s less that I don’t care but more that I don’t have the headspace.

Maireas · 12/08/2022 12:39

@Bringon2023 - you're right!

housinghero · 12/08/2022 12:39

all sooo sensible.
Gotta love Mumsnet

I'm off to Waitrose in my neighbours evoke to go an do some shopping - I will write to you from prison.

Featuredcreature · 12/08/2022 12:43

I think it's all by design tbh the current system is unsustainable. Instead of actually saying that and being honest they will grind us into the ground until we will accept any old shite to feel better.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/08/2022 12:45

Supposed to be travelling from Euston to Warrington next Wednesday. Avanti haven't been selling any tickets now for a week, because of strikes and staff shortages, and apparently can't work out a timetable yet...
So please feel free to add transport chaos to the oncoming apocalypse. 😁

Deguster · 12/08/2022 12:45

If you can afford to put something in the food bank, then do that. It’s one of the few things that will actually help those who will be at the sharp end of the coming months. Navel-gazing won’t.
