To think most parents don’t do this

Skyismylimit · 12/08/2022 11:26

Out with my DD and my friend and her DD today. My friend froze her DD’s water bottle so it will last most of the day. When she asked why I didn’t freeze my DD’s I just said “I didn’t think of that” and then my friend went on to say “most parents freeze their DC’s water bottles in this weather. AIBU to think most parents don’t do this?

I think it is quite common tbf.

When I was in primary, pretty much everyone was went with a frozen water bottle, plus a normal one to drink right away.

Absolutely this! So I just naturally did it for my DS this summer term (only when hot obviously).

I was at primary school in the 80s and we didn’t take water bottles to primary or secondary school. There were water fountains dotted around instead.

Same and you could have a small bottle of warm milk at break time.

No I don't freeze water bottles.

KarmaComma · 13/08/2022 17:37

Karma it generally doesn't last all day, but it stays cool for longer. generally 500mls have pretty much melted by midday. In this current heat (that's with them in an insulated bottle carrier, obviously quicker meltage in a bog standard plastic bag!)

How long do they have to go without any liquid water, @whataloadabullocks? When I've seen bottles frozen before, it's always accompanied by kids trying to suck water out of them. In the 30 degree heat we've been having, kids need more than a bottle per day,

NotQuiteUsual · 12/08/2022 12:26

If it's frozen surely they drink less as they have to wait for it to melt. I thought the idea was to get as many liquids in them as you can, not limit it, by making sure what of it is frozen? Or do you just freeze it till it's ice cold/ slightly icey?

I freeze bottles half full on their side and then top up with water in the morning

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/08/2022 18:05

I've never thought of that.

It's a good idea actually

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 12/08/2022 11:33

This.

And actually on the rare occasion I have froze a water bottle I inevitably leave it too long so it's literally an ice cube, can't be drunk until its defrosted and have to then buy a bloody bottle. Thus defeating the object Confused

Agreed. TMS.

Twatty Mum Syndrome.

BooksAndHooks · 13/08/2022 18:19

Yes since I was at school we always froze ours. We usually have a drawer in the freezer with frozen water bottles in this weather.

Bonjovispjs · 13/08/2022 18:27

I've been doing this for years, but for myself if I was going on a picnic on a hot day or something, it starts to melt reasonably quickly on a hot day like today so you're not left gagging for a drink, I freeze the 2 litre bottles so it lasts ages.

dandelionthistle · 13/08/2022 18:34

That was a weird and unpleasant comment.

As to whether normal... certainly when I was at primary school everyone seemed to go in with a frozen bottle.

My understanding now is that room temp water is better for hydrating you, and hot drinks are better for cooling you down on a hot day, so it's not at all obvious to me that it's actually a good idea anyway...

DiscoBadgers · 13/08/2022 18:37

I don’t for DS as he has SEN and needs a specific type of water bottle but we used to when I was at school

MargaretThursday · 13/08/2022 18:41

My dm did it for us when we were going on picnics, and I do it for my dc now.

Although I saw it suggested in a news article titled something like "Mum suggested amazing hack for lunchboxes and mums are AMAZED" fairly recently.
I wanted to comment that if mums were amazed it was probably more that she was trying to pass it off as a new idea...

Handsnotwands · 13/08/2022 18:53

I’d not have thought of it. Can you do it with a chilly bottle or would it compromise its insulation?

LondonJax · 13/08/2022 19:03

We freeze water bottles if we're out for the day and, if we are on a long journey in a car or a train, I freeze part wrung out flannels too.

Pop the flannels in a plastic bag and put them in a cool bag. Then pop one on your throat or ankle to cool down - back in the cool bag afterward to keep them cool. As they finally thaw out you can wring out until damp and use the damp flannel on your face and neck.

We did Cornwall to London in the really hot weather of 2018 and got stuck in traffic on the M25 - kept lovely and cool with these!

Nat6999 · 13/08/2022 19:03

If you put a bottle of water in the freezer for 2-3 hours then shake it the water freezes like magic.

illbeinthegarden · 13/08/2022 19:20

I half 1/4 fill and lay bottle on side in freezer to freeze then add water in the morning. I've heard teachers mention kids not being able to drink their drinks cause it's all frozen. Half and half keeps it cold through the day

RedRobyn2021 · 13/08/2022 19:23

I have never done this 😂

AlwaysLatte · 13/08/2022 19:24

I do on very hot days.

LimboLass · 13/08/2022 19:28

My school had a various drinking water taps when I was a girl. I presumed this was the same for all schools.

devildeepbluesea · 13/08/2022 19:28

I voted YANBU but I do do this.

Ooooh I’m going to try this!!

bluekostree · 13/08/2022 19:35

Yes I either freeze (if I know it's hot and we're going out) several bottles of water but if it's last minute I fill the bottle with ice cubes and add water. Warm water is rank! Most people I know would do this.

FangsForTheMemory · 13/08/2022 19:36

I've done this on very long continental train journeys. It works a treat.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/08/2022 19:52

I put ice cubes and water in a Chiliy-your bottle.

Frozen bottles either melt too quickly, or not quick enough!

Thethuthinang · 13/08/2022 22:46

I froze a couple bottle once. Left uncapped, not full all the way and the expansion of the ice still opened a leak in the bottle. Not doing that again.
