To think most parents don’t do this

Skyismylimit · 12/08/2022 11:26

Out with my DD and my friend and her DD today. My friend froze her DD’s water bottle so it will last most of the day. When she asked why I didn’t freeze my DD’s I just said “I didn’t think of that” and then my friend went on to say “most parents freeze their DC’s water bottles in this weather. AIBU to think most parents don’t do this?

I've never done it for my kids, but see parents do it for theirs. I'm Not sure why you'd want one bottle of ice to last all day. It's the kids can't get any liquid out for hours. I'm currently running a holiday club. None of the parents freeze the bottles and we have fresh water to refill their bottle multiple times a day in this weather.

Karma it generally doesn't last all day, but it stays cool for longer. generally 500mls have pretty much melted by midday. In this current heat (that's with them in an insulated bottle carrier, obviously quicker meltage in a bog standard plastic bag!)

OP I lived in a hot country for a few years and this was very much the norm. You then put the frozen water bottle in some type of carrier so when it starts to thaw you don't get a wet bottle from the condensation!
From reading this this thread it seems a 50/50 (ish) mix. You're not alone but nor is your your dd' friend.
I don't think it would work for those dc who want to guzzle water by 10am, but it works for my dc who like cold water and sip throughout the day.

Sobaridiot · 12/08/2022 14:07

Maybe not most, but enough that it's a valid point. It's definitely a common thing to do.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 12/08/2022 14:11

I freeze about a quarter of the bottle so there's space for water and the ice keeps it cooler. Was probably a tip I read about on here tbh.

As if I'd be a cunt to try and make you feel small by saying that though!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/08/2022 14:16

Well it’s not a bad idea but I don’t think “most” people do it.

somanybooks · 12/08/2022 14:16

I don't, never even given it a thought. That said I do hate drinking really cold drinks and always refuse ice, so that's probably why. My children have never asked for a frozen drink and I think they'd dislike the condensation in their bags if I did. They're not keen on the dampness from a frozen frube 😆

Christmasiscominghohoho · 12/08/2022 14:17

I freeze my kids.
Its hot & it’s a easy simply thing to do.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 12/08/2022 14:17

I freeze my kids water bottles. Not my actual kids. Ha

LoveKingGary · 12/08/2022 14:19

I suspect she just meant 'most parents I know' and didn't communicate that well.

It's actually a really good idea and I'm going to start doing it.

wibblewobbleball · 12/08/2022 14:22

I think this is quite normal to do.

DuggeeHugPlease · 12/08/2022 14:35

I often do this.
When I'm taking a picnic I fill up a couple of bigger bottles (empty tonic water), freeze overnight and use as an iceblock in the picnic bag. Keeps the food cool and means we have cold water to top up our water bottles during the afternoon.

Fink · 12/08/2022 14:39

I do freeze bottles, and take a liquid one for drinking straight away. But I wouldn't have said that most parents do it. I haven't kept an eye on other parents to see what they do so no idea what percentage do and don't, but she sounds a bit smug claiming that it's just the done thing. It is if you think of it/have been shown (my Mum started me on it), but it's not a massive parenting fail to have never considered it.

germsandcoffee · 12/08/2022 14:42

I do but only because my daughter only drinks really cold things.(sensory issues and asd).

glamourousindierockandroll · 12/08/2022 14:45

I used to do it for myself when i was at school because everyone else did.

I've never thought of doing it for my kids. I think her comment was not meant nicely.

NotAnEmmit · 12/08/2022 14:48

I’ve never done it but I do put loads of ice in if it’s a hot day.

Leafy3 · 12/08/2022 14:48

I've never known anyone else to do this but my mum used to do it for me for school and I do it now when I'm playing sports in the summer. It's a brilliant trick - it melts at just the right rate through the day, keeping the water (or squash) icy cold.

I usually fill it half to 3/4 full in the evening and freeze it overnight. Top it up with cold water in the morning and am good to go.

amysaurus87 · 12/08/2022 14:55

I freeze half of it, so I half fill the bottle with water and pop it in the freezer, then before we leave I add a bit of squash and cold water to the remaining half....as the frozen half melts it keeps the drink cold all day.

longtompot · 12/08/2022 14:57

I used to freeze the water in my kids water bottle when they went to school. I did fill it up and freeze it but then it took too long to defrost so they couldn't drink it. If you quarter fill it then lie it on its side in the freezer you can then top up with water in the morning and they have lovely cold water for a good amount of the day. My eldest is 25 so this was a while ago and before the cold water bottles

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 12/08/2022 14:59

A young statistician taking note of everyone's habits obsessively?

Or a kid talking crap?

No I do not freeze water bottles. I have a metal flask bottle for my daughter and it keeps the water cool, I add ice cubes, and we do unlimited ice pops in this weather.

PrettyasaPainting · 12/08/2022 14:59

I'm on holiday and seen loads of people with frozen bottles of water. I have got to the grand old age of 47 and never knew frozen bottles was a thing!

ladymaiasaura · 12/08/2022 15:06

I don’t. Can’t be bothered with everything getting damp from condensation on the outside. I do use insulated bottles though so the water stays cold. Really not worth getting upset about. It will hydrate your child whatever temperature it is.

roarfeckingroarr · 12/08/2022 15:11

I freeze mine. I wouldn't judge someone who didn't.

Sceptre86 · 12/08/2022 15:18

I do.

Notanotherwindow · 12/08/2022 15:18

I do if I remember but it took me till college to think of it. My mum never did but we weren't allowed drinks at school then, only with lunch.

tiggergoesbounce · 12/08/2022 15:34

I freeze our DSs water bottle if its hotter than normal.
Most of his friends do as well.

Imaginary · 12/08/2022 15:47

I didn't know it was a thing.
What are you supposed to do with it? Suck on the ice? 😮
