To think most parents don’t do this

Out with my DD and my friend and her DD today. My friend froze her DD’s water bottle so it will last most of the day. When she asked why I didn’t freeze my DD’s I just said “I didn’t think of that” and then my friend went on to say “most parents freeze their DC’s water bottles in this weather. AIBU to think most parents don’t do this?

When I was a kid everyone had frozen capri suns in their (non insulated) plastic lunchboxes.

Mine take a Chillys bottle filled with cold water and ice, and if it's a long day they take a frozen bottle.

littleducks · 12/08/2022 11:58

Think it's common but I don't find it works, makes plastic bottles crack over time and metal on

megletthesecond · 12/08/2022 11:59

I half freeze my teens water bottles so it keeps cool until lunchtime.

RainyDays22 · 12/08/2022 12:00

I freeze my DCs bottles I thought it was just the done thing.

SheWoreYellow · 12/08/2022 12:00

I did this once and got told not to by school.

Why?

Surely it’s a question of preference - personally I find that a bottle with as many ice cubes as I can get in topped up fro the tap stays pretty cool most of the day.

Clarinet1 · 12/08/2022 12:03

Oops from the tap!

Skyismylimit · 12/08/2022 12:01

Why?

See my post on the first page. It makes a lot of mess.

Skyeheather · 12/08/2022 12:06

I remember doing this at secondary school in the summer, it was the "in" thing to do at the time!

During the last heatwave I froze some fruit shoot bottles and kids water bottles and put them in the cool box to keep the food cool until lunchtime. The drinks were defrosted and cool for the journey home.

I also freeze a small carton/smoothie and put it in my sons lunch box to keep his lunch cold until lunchtime (lunch boxes are stored on a trolley that sits in front of the window in the sun at my son's school).

You just haven't heard to this, until now.... up to you if you agree it's a good idea or not?

10HailMarys · 12/08/2022 12:08

I'm sure some people do but I doubt 'most' do and anyway, your friend couldn't possibly know either way, so she's a twat.

Hugasauras · 12/08/2022 12:08

I don't. She seems like a bit of a twat anyway. Asking why you didn't? Confused Is 'cos I couldn't be arsed and am a disorganised shambles' a suitable reason? As that would be mine. If I remember the bottle at all we are doing well Grin

CombatBarbie · 12/08/2022 12:10

I am one of these that does this. Ice cubes into current bottle and one frozen if we are out for more than a couple of hours. Reason being, we live rurally and so our adventures mean we are rarely near anywhere to stop and buy cooled stuff.

CombatBarbie · 12/08/2022 12:11

Oh and frubes are always put into lunch boxes and picnics frozen.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 12/08/2022 12:13

Most parents who do that freeze half the bottle, then top up with squash or water. It's a common thing nowadays

Sunnyqueen · 12/08/2022 12:14

I fill them ice cubes, never actually frozen a bottle though

oldwhyno · 12/08/2022 12:16

never frozen a water bottle in my life, for me or my kids, and not about to start.

NotQuiteUsual · 12/08/2022 12:26

If it's frozen surely they drink less as they have to wait for it to melt. I thought the idea was to get as many liquids in them as you can, not limit it, by making sure what of it is frozen? Or do you just freeze it till it's ice cold/ slightly icey?

My friend has frozen her DD’s bottle solid, it’s a proper big ice block in there

I freeze mine for work. It's so hot that it's defrosted by 8.30 am

Peachyscream · 12/08/2022 12:30

Half frozen, half cold water is common in my house on a hot school day.
For a full day out I'll do some fully frozen and it'll be cold water at the end of the day.

Thesearmsofmine · 12/08/2022 12:34

I freeze them. I sent them to holiday club this week with frozen bottles which lasted them until they got back at about 2.30.

alloutofcareunits · 12/08/2022 12:46

Threads like this make me feel ancient, no one took drinks to school when I was young, we'd have got into serious trouble for doing so. Same with snacks - no way! No one took drinks out with them unless going to be out for a picnic or for the full day, the water obsession is quite new tbh.

alloutofcareunits · 12/08/2022 12:46

This included during the 1976 drought too

Why would you have got in trouble?
