Am I the only one who thinks scrimping and saving can go and get fucked for bare essentials

All the advice about cost of living seems to be ways you can scrimp and save to possible cobble together enough money to stay alive on bare necessities such as food, water, etc. Am I the only one thinking fuck this we just should not accept this when many of the companies jacking up their prices are making record profits. Even if it’s technically possible why on earth should I give up new clothes, gadgets, TV, holidays abroad, ect all to fund the obscene riches of the one percent. Instead of this advice on how to possibly meet these we actually need to say on mass no we are not surfs under the feudal system and we refuse to become a peasant class enough is enough. We should demand the government steps on and nationalises these companies and demand immediate taxes on the ultra rich to fund it all. I’ve always been fairly right wing and conservative but surely this is simply some kind of feudalism that will reduce many of us to little more than peasants and ruin the quality of life for many. Aibu?

It’s amazing how left leaning people become when the economic shut hits the fan. My godmother met her husband at their local conservative drinks party in the 70s. Forked out for private school (or her husband did) and lived in a nice fat Georgian house with lots of antiques. Til he lost the lot with a huge but easy to make mistake. She moved out in her 60s, lives on benefits in a flat that allows that and is extremely keen on Labour all of a sudden.

It's mind blowing that people can be this ignorant (or just fucking selfish in the extreme)

Its very ignorant. Who the fuck is going to do the jobs that make the profit for those at the top if everyone ‘just earns more’? Who is going to take your bins? Deliver your goods? Produce your food? if they all ‘stop feeling entitled’ to a decent standard of living and ‘just earn more’ by working their way up? You can’t have everyone at the top and the people at the top wouldn’t earn a thing without the people doing lower paid work that keeps the economy going.
The comment from the poster that said people would ‘just go and buy Nikes’ if they had more money is probably one of the stupidest comments I’ve read on here in a while.

Exactly.
Same poster I quoted unsurprisingly 🙄

theworldhas · 11/08/2022 22:01

Vote for Tory policies get Tory policies.

Winederlust · 11/08/2022 22:04

ImWell · 11/08/2022 20:22

Bettered by yourself here though. You clearly are utterly ignorant of economics, yet here you are pretending to understand.

If employers can’t find people to empty the bins because too many of them moved up, then they will have to pay higher wages.

Simple supply and demand. Your posts really are appalling, uneducated, entitled, poorly thought out.

Oh give over. How about we cut out the middle man and pay them what they're worth now?

If you genuinely think the way out of living on the breadline for most people is getting a better/another job then you're the one utterly ignorant of the current economic climate.

theworldhas · 11/08/2022 22:05

@Applesonthelawn
I believe there are plenty of countries which have taken political choices since say WW2, which have resulted in a better average standard of living than the UK. Germany, France, Norway etc. The populace might do better to look to them for a few ideas that might be adapted here rather than droning on about “communism”.

theworldhas · 11/08/2022 22:12

@OlympicProcrastinator
Neither do the politics of greed. There is a balance to be had. These conversations always seem to be a tale of extremes between hardline socialists and capitalists. I think the parties in parliament are reflective of this polarisation.

Thankfully we have a centrist government in waiting, led by Keir Starmer. The alternative is another five years of the right wing free market extremists that are running the country into the ground - they spent the first decade decimating public services while blathering about Brexit, and now the cost of living crisis is here as well. They’ve achieved nothing.

FelicityFlops · 11/08/2022 22:17

OP you lost me at ect.
Why should the government fund any of our lifestyles?
Free market economy, which, I understand, a lot of you voted for.
I am not a socialist, but I do think a country should ensure that there is basic energy, housing and food for its people.
Other than the basics, I believe there should be no more interference in our lives. Sadly this 24/365 spy system makes that about impossible.
Nobody thought that through.

VestaTilley · 11/08/2022 22:23

Welcome to the reality of what right wing politics actually means. You voted for it, you own it.

The Tories don’t believe in helping the poorest, redistributing wealth, taxing the rich or nationalizing industries. Consider yourself lucky that you’re only finding out now how hard it is to live under a Tory Govt.

The only one with a plan right now to deal with this is Gordon Brown. And the public slung him out in favour of David Cameron.

HMSSophia · 11/08/2022 22:27

PlanetNormal · 11/08/2022 18:21

Well, OP, if you have “always been fairly right wing and conservative”, then congratulations. You have got the capitalist, privatised, free-market economic system you voted for, and it’s a bit late to start whinging about it now. You are the Turkey who rather stupidly voted for Christmas. So suck it up.

What she said. In bold italics.

InChocolateWeTrust · 11/08/2022 22:28

I'm not sure there has ever been a time when mankind has had such excess/surplus as a society (beyond what we need to live) where it's been distributed fairly. As long as there has been societal wealth it has pretty much always been hogged by a lucky few.

That said, the UK are worse than other countries. We seem to be modelling ourselves on the most unequal economies (...the US) rather than the more equal like the nordics.

InChocolateWeTrust · 11/08/2022 22:30

I’ve always been fairly right wing and conservative

Well you pretty much got what you voted for then!

There are alternatives you know. You don't have to vote for Liz Thatcher Truss.

ladygindiva · 11/08/2022 22:33

Macaroni1924 · 11/08/2022 21:29

No, I wouldn’t because I have been there. Did u grudge people who made smarter choices than me in life no.

That comment reveals so much. And none of it good.

Jki · 11/08/2022 22:33

OP you lost me at ect.

Me as well.

That’s is a shocking thing to write, isn’t it?

Winederlust · 11/08/2022 22:35

latetothefisting · 11/08/2022 21:52

How much do you think the 1% earn that not paying them would make any difference to the cost of living?

I don't necessarily morally agree with the ridiculous bonuses they get, but say the CEO of EDF got a million pound bonus this year and it gets cancelled. Divide that between 10 million customers and that's....10p off my estimated energy bill of, whatever it's currently been estimated at, say £3500. Well that will make all the difference. Get rid of bonuses for the CEOs of tescos and vodafone too and pass those savings onto the customers and I'm laughing, I'll be able to go on holiday with that saved 30p.

Lots of things are a bit shit and unfair in Britain at the moment, and its not unreasonable to discuss what we could do to improve them, but yabu to just rant without making any sense, and to suggest that a year or two not having a holiday or the latest iphone makes life not worth living.

You know that the likes of BP are posting profits of $billions per quarter?
we're not talking about director bonuses here, we're talking about the actual profits of the business, most of which go straight in the shareholders' pockets.

Getoff · 11/08/2022 22:37

I think people are too stupid to realise that the rich have everyone else's money

This isn't true. The majority of the non-rich population's money has not be been stolen or borrowed by the rich. The rich may have money that used to belong to everyone else, which everyone else used to by goods and services from the rich, or pay rent to the rich, or pay interest to the rich. But that money now belongs to the rich, it stopped belong to everyone else when they spent it.

birdfeeders · 11/08/2022 22:38

But gadgets and holidays abroad are entirely optional luxuries. Don't see why you would demand them as a basic human right. How much of a nanny state are you wanting, exactly?

birdfeeders · 11/08/2022 22:39

And I have a very low income and have hardly been abroad

Doobydoo · 11/08/2022 22:39

I agree with@BattenburgDonkey .

NSA2103 · 11/08/2022 22:42

"En masse", not "on mass".

BitOutOfPractice · 11/08/2022 22:46

You expect a Tory government to nationalise essential services? Or even give a shiny shit for ordinary people? Of you do I’ll have whatever you are smoking

Cyclebabble · 11/08/2022 22:47

Auntieobem · 11/08/2022 18:17

That's not what OP means. I get it. Why should the majority cut back to the bare necessities to pay into the coffers of energy companies and line the pockets of the rich?

For a while I am afraid we all need to cut back. Foreign holidays are not an essential. There is a good case for a further windfall tax, but we are all going to face increased costs even then. There is a war on and we cannot get all of the gas and electricity we need without buying it on an open market. For the very poorest I would support a social tarriff, but we have no rights to foreign holidays when times get tough. Sorry.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/08/2022 22:53

@NSA2103 have you really come here to correct SPAG? Have you any idea what a an utter knob that makes your look?

Notlosinganyweight · 11/08/2022 22:58

LaurieFairyCake · 11/08/2022 17:51

I think people are too stupid to realise that the rich have everyone else's money Hmm

They didn't make it - they just sold you something at a price you were (mostly forced) to buy...

They kind of did 'make' it - they printed a fuck tonne of it.

It's sad that a lot of people seem defeated on this thread. We do sort of have to show our strength or we will just be walked over. There is more of us than them and I fear at this rate the resolution will literally come down to that.
