Bringing your sky TV and deep fat fryer camping

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 18:26

I am in France camping at the moment and there are 2 British families here in caravans with deep fat fryers, freezers, microwaves, sky tv, air con etc etc. They have it all set up outside their vans. One of them also has a god awful strip light too in their awning. They don’t walk around the site either but are just on their electric scooters.

Maybe I am a camping purist but what’s the point of having sky tv etc when you are in the great outdoors?! Surely the point of camping is to get away from it all & be in nature? Maybe that’s just me….they blast out sky news to the campsite in the morning too- it’s nearly driven everyone mad to be honest. Why not just stay in your house in the uk?

aibu? Or a camping snob!!!

Whaattttt?. You're in a bar!. If you're such a camping purist shouldn't you be drinking warm wine out of a tin cup?😉

On her phone, in a bar. Probably sitting in a chair, maybe about to use a loo with a flush. She's just as bad!

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 10/08/2022 19:29

We took a tv camping on holiday in Wales in the 1970s. It plugged into the car. We took a chip pan too.
Others did the same, it wasn’t that unusual.

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 19:34

@Megapint have been doing plenty of that I assure you 🥵 It’s 38 degrees here today!

RausageSoul · 10/08/2022 19:36

How on earth do you take sky tv with you?

TwoMonthsOff · 10/08/2022 19:36

why would anybody want to cook in a fryer in France I’d just be embracing cheese bread and wine

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 10/08/2022 19:39

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 18:37

@Alliswells most people camp to be outside in nature and not to have sky tv blasting at them every day!

I don't think that's really true anymore.

Many people camp because it's the only way they can afford a holiday.

Catsstillrock · 10/08/2022 19:40

Some people camp because they like to be able to control their environment and have all their familiar things, not to enjoy the pit doors / nature.

Maybe fry the Camembert, mmmm....

sky tv

With a dish of the roof ... of the tent?

Apologies, read a lot of the thread but didn't quite get to the end before posting 😀

You need to borrow their air conditioning

LubaLuca · 10/08/2022 19:48

I can only imagine it's because you're a much better person than they are, yeah?

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 19:54

@LubaLuca well, I’m not an inconsiderate wanker who blasts out TV on a campsite every day 🙄

ManateeFair · 10/08/2022 19:56

If you stay in a static caravan it would generally have a TV. If everyone else can hear it I imagine that’s annoying but hearing people snore, fart and all the other stuff you hear through the canvas of a tent is annoying too. The worst thing about campsites is the tedious lack of privacy and the constant presence of other people in general.

I’d probably rather listen to Sky News than the loud performance parenting of competitive middle-class Boden families tbh.

What’s it got to do with you how they cook their meals? Who cares if a stranger uses a microwave on holiday?

User639921 · 10/08/2022 20:06

People in touring caravans and motorhomes have tv, some have Sky and different cooking stuff, we certainly do and it's not that dissimilar to camping.

TwoMonthsOff · 10/08/2022 20:07

@Maireas
hmm you do have a point 🧀🥖🍷

User639921 · 10/08/2022 20:11

I just see that the culprits were in caravans not tents, of course they had a TV, we have a 26" one in ours and a microwave, it's fitted in the caravan.

NippyWoowoo · 10/08/2022 20:16

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 18:43

Maybe my view of camping is different- I do it to get away from living in a box & having loads of mod cons like a TV.

Good for you. We all like different things. I see that you like cringe user names.

Brieandcamembert · 10/08/2022 20:24

It's none of our business what anyone else wants to bring.

oy as long as their lifestyle isn't inflicting itself on you.

See also - blaring music at your tent/ in your semi detached garden.

Sitting up chatting until late on a campsite etc

I really do think it depends where you go. If you go to the lake District/ Wales i.e walkers campsites you generally find quite simple lifestyle types. If you stay on a holiday camp in Newquay you appear to get the loud folk who seem less fussed about inflicting themselves on people.

kateandme · 10/08/2022 20:48

If think you can still get away from it all and have home comforts.
but the op was clearly talking about a “certain kind of person, family” with the chips, loud, loud, scooter clad kids.

so I think there is a difference. Or a difference on how people are seen.

and I think it’s perfectly ok and still nature loving to want to be away but still be in routines and comforts you have at home.your still in France, can still walk and breathe and feel free and rested.

runforyourdog · 10/08/2022 20:58

We have most of those things in our caravan! Well I don't have a deep fat fryer or sky TV at home so we don't have those things but we do have a TV.. and the caravan has a freezer etc. What's the problem with that? I'm not really a 'get away from it all' kind of person. I think it's the kind of thing that posh towny people say who actually live in central London.

You enjoy your holiday, let other people enjoy theirs without being judgemental!

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 10/08/2022 21:01

Have you mentioned it to the site warden or reception area?
I do this job at a site in the UK, if people mentioned it to me I would have a quiet word about being respectful of their neighbours.

However the one thing that bugs me most is people complaining about things elsewhere or after the fact, we can't be everywhere at all times so if we don't know we can't do anything about it.

Simonjt · 10/08/2022 21:08

I am in France camping at the moment and there are 2 British families here in caravans with deep fat fryers, freezers, microwaves, sky tv, air con etc etc.

So they’re in caravans with completely normal facilities you would expect to find in a carvan.

wellhelloitsme · 10/08/2022 21:23

Surely the point of camping is to get away from it all & be in nature?

And yet here you are starting a thread on Mumsnet...

FinallyHere · 10/08/2022 21:27

I am intrigued, @Simonjt , do caravans honestly have satellite dishes or is this Sky TV via BB/WiFi ?

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2022 21:29

The only unreasonable bit is the noise pollution. Not sure how them having a deep fat fryer affects you. I think if you want to truly get away from it all you don't choose an actual campsite but go a bit more remote with no other campers around?
