Bringing your sky TV and deep fat fryer camping

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 18:26

I am in France camping at the moment and there are 2 British families here in caravans with deep fat fryers, freezers, microwaves, sky tv, air con etc etc. They have it all set up outside their vans. One of them also has a god awful strip light too in their awning. They don’t walk around the site either but are just on their electric scooters.

Maybe I am a camping purist but what’s the point of having sky tv etc when you are in the great outdoors?! Surely the point of camping is to get away from it all & be in nature? Maybe that’s just me….they blast out sky news to the campsite in the morning too- it’s nearly driven everyone mad to be honest. Why not just stay in your house in the uk?

aibu? Or a camping snob!!!

Surely the point of camping is to get away from it all & be in nature? Camping on a camp site and “getting away from it all” aren’t really compatible though, are they?

Depends on the site.

Most are full of people who appreciate how sounds travel in tents, and are respectful and quiet.

But there are noisy ‘holiday park’ type camps where anything goes, apparently, as long as the perpetrators are having fun.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 10/08/2022 18:54

When I see people kitted out like that on campsites I always assume they are either there for a long stay or that they live fairly close by and visit very regularly so really want a home from home set up.
Like a second home rather than a holiday if you see what I mean?
Often their kids are happy roaming and playing with other regular children and the parents are relaxing on their pitch rather than going for days out like other holiday makers.
If the noise is a nuisance then I'd mention something to reception but otherwise live and let live.

Mythreefavouritethings · 10/08/2022 18:54

Reminds me of an episode of the Royle Family when, having stayed in a caravan for a few days, no one could get over the absence of a chip pan. ‘You read about this sort of thing but you never think it will happen to you, do you?’ 😂. I wouldn’t be remotely bothered, let’s face it, we work hard enough all year, if this is what they want to do, what’s the problem? However you choose to spend it, I hope all of you on the site enjoy your break

paddingtonstares · 10/08/2022 18:55

We are caravanners,we have a TV, but we dont go abroad I'm too scared the tow abroad if the weather is rubbish we have entertainment in the evening. It doesn't go on if its nice. We have a collection of dvds to watch if there isn't signal. We are going away next month, I've bought some new dvds to take, in my experience rain is likely 😂

For some people camping is about being in nature and getting away from it all, for some people it’s a cheap way of having a holiday and the actual camping is an inconvenience.

This.

For me it's a cheap holiday somewhere sunny. Especially if you're on a campsite with Eurocamp or Canvas or similar.

I think not everyone who goes camping goes because they love it. They go for a reasonably priced foreign holiday. My general holiday mantra is, it needs to be at least as nice as home, that seems like what they are trying to achieve. Live and let live.

Live and let live is easier said than done when they're disturbing everyone with the noise. People can take their tv wherever they want but others shouldn't be forced to listen to it.

saveforthat · 10/08/2022 18:56

This reminds me of someone I used to work with who said she took an iron and ironing board camping to iron her children's clothes

But relaxing when your walls are polyester is what headphones were made for.

The people in question have a caravan so not walls of polyester

That was to the pp who says she likes to watch TV in her tent.

And the OP says the caravan dwellers are ‘blasting out Sky to the whole campsite’ so bloody noisy whatever their walls are made from.

bibindum · 10/08/2022 18:57

About 10 years ago we went to a no frills campsite in Derbyshire, the people next to us brought their tv, dvd and speakers. I could've dealt with banging techno all night but their 17 year old son was watching a horror film (Saw) so my kids lay in the tent listening to people being attacked with a chainsaw. Told him to turn it off, the dad came back from the pub and told us how f**ing unreasonable we were!

FawnFrenchieMum · 10/08/2022 19:00

YABU to tell people how they should enjoy their holiday

YANBU to be pissed off that they blurt out the TV for all to hear.

We take lots of electrical, home from home items camping with us. The reason FOR US to go camping to get many cheaper get aways over the year then we could otherwise afford. We still like have the easiest, most enjoyable time when we go. That said, we are very respectful of our neighbours, don’t have loud music on etc but you might hear my ninja air fryer bing every now and again.

Hbh17 · 10/08/2022 19:01

I don't have a deep fat fryer, Sky TV, air con or a microwave at home, so no chance!
I thought camping was supposed to be back to nature.....
The thought of wasting time watching television on holiday is just horrible.

liveforsummer · 10/08/2022 19:01

Tbf I've never been to campsite that doesn't have strict rules about noise after a certain time so maybe pick one of those. Or if you're keen on nature and outdoors somewhere with more of a wild theme. Plenty these days that are semi wild and still have facilities and some access to electric but unlikely to have large caravans with blaring sky tv

Maireas · 10/08/2022 19:08

Have they travelled there by truck?!
Are they charged for electricity usage - surely that makes it an expensive holiday?

Maireas · 10/08/2022 19:09

LampLighter414 · 10/08/2022 18:38

I bet they voted for Brexit too!

Why, because they like holidaying in France with a deep fat fryer?

Panatone · 10/08/2022 19:09

Oh Jesus, I’m cringing so hard! WTF is it about brits abroad. People like this should stay at home and go to Blackpool for their holidays.

Why? Maybe they like France and enjoy staying there.

Well, yes. But you've presumably just used a phone or a laptop to post this, and you have internet. There's a teensy bit of hypocrisy there! You're not exactly wild camping halfway up an Alp.

Yes, quite.

Waitformeeeee · 10/08/2022 19:15

in my own defense, when I do watch tv in my tent its on my iPad with headphones. If I could afford a caravan I would have all the luxuries I could. Especially a massive Tv in the bedroom. I don't get much time to laze about at home so that would really be a treat on holiday. I wouldn't bother with a fryer Just stay within walking distance of a pub with nice food.

Panatone · 10/08/2022 19:16

@Maireas There’s enough chavs in the uk. At least if they all stay here, I know I won’t encounter them when I go abroad😀

minou123 · 10/08/2022 19:16

The thought of camping, even in a caravan, is my idea if holiday hell.
So, in truth, I would also take a TV, microwave, chip on etc, just to get through it.

But thats just me 😁

I agree the noise from the TV is annoying and inconsiderate

Europeangirl2022 · 10/08/2022 19:17

Am in a bar as it goes on Wi-Fi! Needed to answer an email so had to come off site to do it as got no data! Hardly the same as making the campsite listen to sky news every day!’

Anything to make the torture of camping a bit more bearable.

Maybe they would wish to seek you out on a mission of self improvement.

bloodyunicorns · 10/08/2022 19:23

Tell them to turn their TV down - they shouldn't be disturbing everyone.

I agree with you about being in nature but some people like their mod cons. And why not - so long as they're not upsetting others.

Megapint · 10/08/2022 19:24

Whaattttt?. You're in a bar!. If you're such a camping purist shouldn't you be drinking warm wine out of a tin cup?😉
