Neighbour BU or am I?

My neighbour has a horrible barking dog that hasn't been trained. Every time it's let out it barks non-stop until it's let in, which can sometimes be for two minutes or sometimes for 20 minutes.

Not long back I was working from home, on a call and had to ask the neighbour to shut the dog up as it was disturbing me and my work. She was gayly sat outside in the sun, with the dog trapped inside barking it's head off for a good ten minutes. When I asked her very nicely to make it be quiet, she said it was inside as it was too hot for it inside. For fucks sake, so I have to listen to it non-stop just so you can have your bit of sun time?

Anyway, that was that and I have kept a noise diary for the past six weeks. In this time, the dog has caused over three hours of noise nuisance. I am going to submit the diary very soon.

Earlier this evening, I was working from home again and the dog was barking it's head off outside for a good five minutes. Then it was let inside and starts barking again. The walls are so thin it sounds like it's in the room with me. I had had enough of having my concentration broke at this point, and said (but not shouted), "oh, for fucks sake, shut up". I then realised that the woman next door had been in the garden and heard me. I heard the door slam not long after and the dog shut up.

The neighbour probably thinks I'm being a massive dick, but AIBU in expecting not to hear the dog every day or for her to take reasonable steps to make sure the dog is quiet including either having it out in the garden with her when it's not too hot or sitting inside with it so it doesn't bark if it is too hot?

3 hours in total over 6 weeks (over 1000 hours)?
Just because you are WFH you can't expect everyone else to be silent the whole time.

I'm not a dog lover, but I think you are being a bit unreasonable.

willowglass · 08/08/2022 19:54

Yadnbu. Also cruel to leave a dog to bark that long.

Notimeforaname · 08/08/2022 19:55

I feel for u op. You weren't unreasonable to say "ffs shut up" in your own home. That's ok. But I cant see what can be done about the dog.

Next door to ius are dogs that are kept in a tiny space outside. They bark and bark all night long . My partner now sleeps most nights in a tiny bed in the boxroom because he cant cope with it.

My neighbours are absolutely scum though, and would have no problem physically attacking us if we pissed them off or even tried to complain.

Hoping to move next year but anyone can move in with a dog or just decide to get a dog so unless you live in the sticks far away from other people, not much you can do .

pictish · 08/08/2022 19:57

I don’t think three hours is much for a six week period.

Sunnyqueen · 08/08/2022 20:01

3 hours over 6 weeks is f all, can't be that bad if that's all you've marked down.

This.

Overthebow · 08/08/2022 20:02

It doesn’t sound like it’s been barking that much really. Dogs do bark sometimes, if it were all the time or waking you up at night then I can see why you’d be annoyed. Go to the office if a bit of barking annoys you that much.

SarahProblem · 08/08/2022 20:04

Tough to vote as you're both unreasonable.

You WFH does not entitle you to a quiet home working space.

Also your neighbour should train her dog.

StoneofDestiny · 08/08/2022 20:07

YANBU. That must be like torture listening to a dog barking whether you are working from home or not! I'd not want to listen to it either. I'm assuming the dog is barking for a reason - an it's owner is not meeting that need.

FanGurlll · 08/08/2022 20:15

Is that not less than 5 minutes a day?
If so, yabu.
However, neighbour should be actively working on the barking issue.

SarahSissions · 08/08/2022 20:20

Three hours over six weeks? The council will laugh their heads off. You need to move somewhere with no neighbours if you are that intolerant of noise

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 08/08/2022 20:33

Dogs bark outside my house 7 days a week from 6 am until 8 /8.30.

Council etc don't give a fuck..

donquixotedelamancha · 08/08/2022 20:52

your neighbour should train her dog.

You can't train all breeds of dog to never bark. 30 min of barking a week is not necessarily badly trained.

SouthWestChief · 08/08/2022 20:53

Who are you going to submit it too?

Becky6758 · 08/08/2022 20:58

SouthWestChief · 08/08/2022 20:53

Who are you going to submit it too?

The council I would imagine

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 08/08/2022 21:02

The trouble with working from home is that you really can't expect peace and quiet from your neighbours.
I fully appreciate that barking dogs are annoying but if you want peace then go to the office

It's the summer holidays, children will be playing and squealing, ball games will be played, people will be enjoying their gardens.

I have a wfh neighbour and have to put up with her endless loud phone calls all day long.

I think you'll just have to suck it up.

youwouldthink · 08/08/2022 21:03

So...less than half an hour a week? You are being ridiculous!

Redbone · 08/08/2022 21:06

YANBU. This would drive me mad too and your neighbour is being very selfish and inconsiderate. She doesn’t know the first thing about looking after dogs either, if they are barking that long they are in distress.

SouthWestChief · 08/08/2022 21:07

Becky6758 · 08/08/2022 20:58

The council I would imagine

I was thinking Paw Patrol

smileandsing · 08/08/2022 21:09

Think I'll submit a diary -to random unknown 'authority'- about how often my dogs cause a noise nuisance to me, or DC for that matter!

It's annoying, but no one will take you seriously with 3 hours total of barking over 6 weeks, so YABU!
Is WFH mandatory or for your convenience? Can you work from the office occasionally? Or even a library or a coffee shop? If not then use noise cancelling headphones or ear defenders/ear plugs. No point in trying to fight the issue clearly it's getting you no where.

Be careful your neighbour doesn't start considering your repeated requests and horrible comments (even though they weren't intended for her ears, you know how thin your walls are) aren't perceived by her as harassment by her

premiumwine · 08/08/2022 21:15

I’m with you OP. I feel like loud household noise shouldn’t be heard outside of the household - whether it’s a dog or not.

30 minutes a week is too much frankly for noise that shouldn’t been there. There’s no unwritten grace period.

Namechange1345677 · 08/08/2022 21:17

youll give the council admin a laugh at least!

SarahSissions · 08/08/2022 21:17

There isn’t a set definition of how much barking is too much. But typically what you’d be looking at is :
the dog barks for 30 minutes straight.
or
The dog barks for more than a combined total of one hour in a 24-hour period.

or the barking occurs during “quiet hours,” typically after 10 PM and before 7 AM

it doesn’t sound like this dog is anywhere near this.

Elsiebear90 · 08/08/2022 21:20

3 hours of 6 weeks is really not that long at all, sounds just like normal dog behaviour, not excessive. I think you need to chill out.

mondaytosunday · 08/08/2022 21:21

My neighbour's dogs are barky and one of them barks all the time. I was out chatting to someone in my own garden and can pretty much tune it out ( I do have two dogs of my own, one barks but not for more than a few seconds). Neighbours dog barking away at us. Then a neighbour over the way shouted 'can you shut that dog up'! We had to shout back that it wasn't our dog, and the neighbours did soon take the dog in.
It must be exhausting having to constantly shush their dog, but they don't seem to bother with training.
