When you’re ill/feeling down/a bit blah?

I live abroad so it’s sometimes hard to get, but I headed to my local *British shop, which I rarely go to today. I’m feeling achey and a bit fluey, just a bit rubbish.
I purchased potato cakes (mum gave me these when ill as a child 🤷🏻‍♀️) crumpets, Lucozade (turns out I don’t like it anymore 🤮) Heinz chicken soup (used to have Ox tail, but wasn’t going there!) Mintolas and Munchies, a Walnut whip, Vimto, Monster munch and angel delight (very bad and just not the same!)
I probably do this once per year and usually in the winter as I start to feel homesick.
Does anyone else?

Should put out I was an 80’s child, 90’s teen…I also watched Beverley hills 90210 (the original one with Luke Perry, Shannon etc) and reminisced about the hours I spent reading Sweet valley high books…sigh

If I have Heinz tomato soup with bread & butter I always feel abit nostalgic!

Kanaloa · 08/08/2022 19:03

When I’m fed up I always have cheese and beans over baby potatoes 😂 it makes me feel totally comforted.

I had the same nostalgia over sweet valley high and got a few for dd as she’s starting to like Nancy drew and other similar books but I was shocked on a reread at how awful they are. Please shut up about the twins’ gorgeous blonde hair and ‘size zero figures.’

Kanaloa · 08/08/2022 19:04

For some reason I’d remembered them in the same vein as Nancy drew/babysitter club/point horror but they’re really not!

Orhe · 08/08/2022 19:05

I do this too, also live abroad and make a yearly trip to a British store and also bring back treats when I visit home. There's something very comforting about knowing there are walnut whips and pot noodle in the cupboard although the pot noodle tasted much better when I was 14 than it does now!

Heinz tomato soup with toast Smile

EdinaMonsoon · 08/08/2022 19:07

not comfort food from childhood because mine was shitty. But as soon as I lived alone aged 16 I would always have beans on toast for comfort & still do. I also taught myself to make proper hot chocolate & that’s also go to.

hamustro · 08/08/2022 19:08

Mashed potato, fish fingers, peas and ketchup, all mixed in together! I'm very aware that people might find it a bit gross, but it's something I used to do whenever I was given fish fingers for dinner as a kid and it takes me right back to being about 7 and watching kids' TV after school.

Potato waffles and Findus crispy pancakes are another guilty pleasure. In terms of sweet things, I'd say a lot of the stuff I enjoyed as a kid (just normal chocolate bars, really, nothing exciting) I still eat on a regular basis so don't have any particular childhood connotations. If I could get my hands on a Marble bar, though, I would immediately be transported back to being about 10 and buying them on the way home from school. I was devastated when they discontinued them and there isn't really much similar on the market except Guylian seashells, which aren't really an everyday buy.

ohnoohnoo · 08/08/2022 19:10

My mom used to make us mash mixed with tuna and sweetcorn, the mash would make everything warm and it was always my go to when poorly. I still have it occasionally now but my kids hate it! It has to be made with smash though (which I know is gross but this meal wouldn't taste the same now with anything else haha)

This is what I have too

Clarissa111 · 08/08/2022 19:12

I know this is off subject. But I recently found a blog called 1bruce1 that recaps the Sweet Valley books and makes you realise how ridiculous they were! Didn't stop my love for them though and even made me buy a few to re read!

PassesAtGlasses · 08/08/2022 19:12

Peas and bisto gravy! A big bowl of the stuff, covered in salt and pepper. Or Heniz tomato soup with cheese grated on top. I could happily live off either of those at any time, but they’re especially good when I’m down

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/08/2022 19:13

Marmite toast cures everything, I'm convinced!

😂

Isn’t it weird when we look back on the things we liked as teens/kids and see how sometimes inappropriate they were? Weirdly I did enjoy rereading the ones I bought for dd but I didn’t pass them onto her despite enjoying them myself. I just never realised as a kid how odd they were.

Kanaloa · 08/08/2022 19:14

I must look up that blog too. Same with childhood foods I suppose - maybe Angel delight was always horrible and we just never realised!

Clarissa111 · 08/08/2022 19:16

They really were odd! I always wanted twin girls and was gonna name them Elizabeth and Jessica! I actually had twin girls, but I didn't name them that!

ZealAndArdour · 08/08/2022 19:17

My poorly food was Heinz tomato soup and ribena when I was little. I still love the soup now and it’s very comforting.

Does anyone else remember those Lollipops that they used to sell in pharmacies that were also a whistle? I associate those with being poorly, presumably because we’d leave the doctors with a prescription for some antibiotics and I’d ask my mum for one while we waited for the medicine 😂

Quirrelsotherface · 08/08/2022 19:19

Mum used to make her version of corned beef hash. It was literally just buttery mash with corned beef and salt but it was delicious, a hug on a plate. Served with brown sauce 😋

ZealAndArdour · 08/08/2022 19:20

There’s a lovely Instagram account having a boom at the moment posting lots of 90’s memories. Lots of nostalgic toys and lunchboxes, toiletries, food, magazines and books.

Oh my god yes! They were on little plasticky sticks and I used to always want a red one. Glad they’re not about anymore. The stickiness of a lolly and all the enjoyment of a kid with a whistle!

Yes I know exactly what you mean. my little DS (5) has changed that association for me now as he loved them and gets one from our local supermarket most weeks. The whistle makes him sound like a Clanger 😃

SummerLobelia · 08/08/2022 19:24

I recall those lollipops!

When I am feeling a little low I eat plastic cheese on toast.

Sometimes I cook up chopped banans and sprinkle with honey.

And i agree... tomato soup from a tin with cheesy toast is the food of the Gods.

webuiltthiscityonrockandwheat · 08/08/2022 19:25

Pasta with ketchup and cheese is my ultimate comfort food. But not just for when I'm ill or down, I took it to work last week for lunch Grin
